  I would imagine that the parents, siblings, friends and loved ones of those killed in any war, whether or not you agree with it, would think the death of those they cared about was a 'news item.'

    As noted in news reports, many insurgents were killed, and they used the cover of a mosque and civilian homes to launch the mortar and rocket attacks.

      Well, we have been hearing that kind of propaganda ever since the 1960s. Fact is, the number of our soldiers being killed in Afghanistan is doubling every year now. Once again, Americans need to read the foreign press if they want to know what is going on in Afghanistan.

      There was a dad who had the army come to his house a few years back.
      To tell him the news about his son.
      He tried to destroy their car.
      He didn't give a rip about Iraqi self-determination or UN sanctions or the baath party vs the shiites vs the sunnis.
      He didn't want a folded coffin flag or a gold star for his window or a solemn bugle call ceremony.
      He wanted his son back.
      So he beat up their car.

  Yes we do. The problem is that these events are not reported enough. All they get is a small mention here and there. Because of this people rarely consider that people are in fact dying. We need stories like this more so people are fully aware of what is going on.

    Fine as long as they counter it with the "good" that we're doing over there...The media does a good job at hyping and glorifying the deaths overs there, but NEVER mention the progress or positives...This is one of the reasons, I think, that the Iraqi war is so unpopular...Do you remember? Everyday since it had started, deathtoll reports came out and that in turn, I beleive, is what made people nervous and doubtful of this war...because no one, including myself, likes to hear about or see people die...I almost think it's better NOT to know because the more deaths people see in the papers, the more complacent Americans get and the more they want to bring the troops back BEFORE they've completed their mission...
    Sometimes it's best we DON'T know....Or if we do get the "gloom and doom" information, give us the good as well...

      We created the Taliban and Al Quaeda on the southern border of Afghanistan to lure in the Soviets and make Afghanistan their Vietnam. The Soviets bombed them back to the stone age, and we have picked up where the Soviets left off.

      Iraq is a failure. The puppets the US installed there want to kick out the same people who think they are defending the country.
      Afghanistan? When you can get a base overrun by some afghan hillbillies, and suffer losses like that, you have to understand that the US is going down the same road as the USSR did. Friends of mine in the neighborhood who were there when Afghanistan was REALLY dangerous would never want to go back, and claimed that the place was still in the medieval ages, beyond help.
      Afghanistan was worth going into, but it's been so bungled now that having our troops dying in drunk driving accidents is more meaningful than continuing in Afghanistan and Iraq.

      the war is old.
      Going on its seventh year.
      We lose a few soldiers every couple of days; we get a big body count of insurgents every couple of days; the Iraqi government totters this way and that. We spend another billion. Old news.
      But now the US is hurting economicly, and that is taking the attention of the country. You can't dazzle us with real-estate news items in bagdad.
      The war has come home; it is killing us economicly HERE. We don't care about the news from Bagdad.

They brag about how smart Ronald Raegon was at over stretching the USSR but are to blind to see the US has fallen into the very same trap. The funny thing is Russia has the means to spring back but the US does not.

    I'm sure the families feel very alone right now. And like it or not if people listened to those like Nikkibabe there sons and daughters would be alive right now and not dead. There is no just cause involved in this current conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan nor are we doing a great thing. The small good deeds are out done by the killing, torture and displacement we are committing over there.

  Better yet, let each and every taxpayer be required to pay a share of the annual cost of the war, including post war care for vets, based on their income tax bracket. No more "let's do the Repuke dance and just put the costs on the national debt so future generations can pay for it."
  When Repukes and Neocon chicken hawks have to write a check to the IRS for 4,400 for last year's "per American" war costs, let's listen to their patriotic howls and cries.
  How nobel of them to be willing to fight a war when somebody else pays for it and somebody else gets killed there.

        You pose a question that I would love to have the answer to. My belief is that the current party is so far from its alleged ideal that I fear there is no possibility of reviving it.
        There are many that claim to be conservative, but their support and actions are anything but. Unfortunately, it is all about obtaining power and holding on to that power. It has nothing to do with service and representation of the citizenry.
        There is so much potential that is failing to be realized.

  Not to mention that we're fighting them with the National Guard in the first freaking place. I can't believe this hasn't been a more questioned fundamental issue up to this point. Not to disparage the National Guard at all, of course. But that's not what their job is supposed to be, the foreign soil bit and all... The perceived eminent threat and original rationale/excuse for their deployment overseas has been debunked or eliminated, however you look at it. Why are they still there?

  we know that the Iraq war is the most sanitized of all wars. that was why they took all the troops computers away. They were posting on the internet how horrible things were. In Iraq they went for the oil and in Afghanistan for a gas pipeline. It is all about greed and they don't care about how many innocent people they kill or displace

    Actually, they didn't take their computers away. What they did do is far more sinister. Soldiers are free to post 'whatever they want' on their blogs, as long as it is 'reviewed' by a superior officer. Of course, it's all to make sure there are no 'security leaks'. (Hmmm, if that is the case, why did it take several YEARS to institute, and why did command originally try to curtail the internet because of 'bandwidth issues'?)
    Predictably, there are far fewer blogs online.

just being in the military is a dangerous occupation--they use a lot of really hazardous material in really radical ways..working a flight deck on a carrier is one of the most dangerous jobs you can have..even in peace time..i just wonder why this is news when being in the military in baghdad or kabul is safer than living in DC or LA..being one of our troops now is a really unique life path decision..its a field they choose to go into..not for everyone..but something some are drawn to for whatever reason..like being a truck driver..now theres a dangerous job..you could look it up

McCain wants to be there for another 100 years. Americans should vote McCain to keep the war on terror for another 100 years or vote Obama to keep Israel for another 600 years. Whoever wins Americans will die for imaginary wars that do not exist. Taliban or any other resistant forces have all the right to attack and kill the occupiers and oppressors whoever they are, the Americans would do the same thing in their own soil if invaded in order to regime change. By now America must realized that changing regime is very serious business and it is time America needs to change its cowboy mentality. America is in the wrong place and supporting the wrong people. The truth is America will not win this war.

        You are right; Powell's words were eloquent.
        And if he, or you, had added 'since the 1st world war' they would have also been true.
        And you are right that 19th century America only did what other countries did; grabbed what they could.
        But Powell kept that fact out; and you just didn't know the facts.
        Moral: if you are going to say domething eloquent; make sure it is true.
        Last thing:
        wrap yourself twenty layers deep in the flag, Slate, but you still aren't the flag. I can disagree with those on the right all day long and the flag of my country waves just as happy.
