"'Who says Gordon Smith helped lead the fight for better gas mileage and a cleaner environment?' a female narrator asks. 'Barack Obama.' The ad flashes to an image of Obama's face and the Illinois senator's website.
Obama does not appear to be the downticket drag Republicans were counting on. Indeed, if anything, it is Obama who is trying to shake his coattail grabbers.
'Barack Obama has a long record of bipartisan accomplishment and we appreciate that it is respected by his Democratic and Republican colleagues in the Senate,' Obama spokesman Bill Burton said after Smith's ad was released. 'But in this race, Oregonians should know that Barack Obama supports Jeff Merkley for Senate. Merkley will help Obama bring about the fundamental change we need in Washington.'
LOL. They'll say ANYTHING to get elected.

I suppose I should give Gordon Smith credit for one thing: He's right about Obama's record of bipartisan accomplishment.

Obama's record from nearly eight years in the Illinois Senate suggests someone who believes strongly that government can make life better for people, whether by offering financial help, banning dangerous guns or providing health care. But Obama, now the Democratic candidate for president, was no ideologue. He often cooperated with Republican lawmakers, co-sponsoring their legislation and working with them on compromises."

Yes, one serious issue I have with Mr. O is his idea of "dangerous guns." I'm a target shooter, and my favorite is one that is useable by women, people of short stature, and people with disabilities, because it has so many safety and usability features.
But the so-called "assault weapons ban" actually focused on the very features that make these tools available to those who need them most. Here is a city-boy who knows nothing about guns, and listens to people suffering from post-traumatic stress (like Mrs. Br-ady), and attempt to stop the law-abiding from owning them.
Since 90% of firearm murders are committed by convicted felons (and criminals will always have guns), disarming the law-abiding makes absolutely no sense.
I'm a pretty strong civil libertarian about many things--I think abortion is a private matter and I think we need to get out front in stem cell research because it could be the future of our health and our economy.

And if this is your ONLY issue with Obama, that would apparently be enough to vote him down?

Why McCain's Senate Experience Might Not Trump Obama's State Legislature Experience
"21st century U.S. senators like McCain are, virtually by the nature of the job, gadflies. Meanwhile, Obama was forced to wrestle with the minutiae of health-care policy, utility deregulation, transportation funding, school aid, and a host of other issues that are vitally important to America.
For a Barack Obama in the Illinois Senate, can we be so sure that the skill set picked up over eight years in a state Capitol is inferior to 2 decades in the pompous, cordoned-off environment of the U.S. Senate? I seriously doubt it."

Keep trying. Apparently, all that will help is another terrorist attack, according to the lobbyist that used to work for McCain.

On the face of it, this is...pleasant news.
One likes to think that the advantages of allying oneself with O. were perceived to outweigh the possible disadvantages.
On the other hand, as a general rule, expressions of bipartisanship like Scott's are rare and not something one can bring to the bank.
So either the guy's a saint, terminally cynical, or laughably misdirected.
Or his campaign folks are.

I think you mean Smith.
This is a GREAT move by Gordon Smith. By reaching across the aisle, to grab a hold of Obama`s coat-tails, Smith portrays himself as a bipartisan pol, a green pol, and guaranteed his name would be all over the national and regional news without spending dime #1.
Great politicing by Smith. Even with Obama still endorsing Smith`s opponent, this was a grand slam for Smith!
Would any of us know about or be talking about him otherwise?
Of course McCain`s camp has got to be a little ticked that a fellow Republican politician is placing his bet on Obama`s horse instead of McCain`s.

Perhaps Smith sees the writing on the wall and the effect negative Obama ads had in the 3 recent special elections that saw the Dems sweep?

You have to wonder how desperate and scared the Republicans are to campaign for a candidate by posting hims with the Dems candidate for President vs the Dumya or McLame. How much more of this =distancing form the disasters will be taking place and how much of it is an attempt to divert from the complicit endorsement they gave Bush for 6 years. This is beginning to sound like Germany after the end of the war when no one was ever a Nazi by talking to its citizens.

Oregon isn't looking too kindly on republicans these days. Smith has voted the party line 72% of the time, & I wouldn't be thrilled with his trashing the Constitution. However, more than a few democrats did the same thing. He did vote to expand children's health care against the CONS, and he also voted against Gonzales.

True, and a McCain presidency would/could do little to right the wrongs of the past 8 years. The mere suspicion that some of the old discreditted sycophants of the current Neocon administration might still be lurking around the corridors of power should this elderly gent become POTUS, should have sensible voters stampeding to Obama's camp.

McCain said he didn't think it would hurt his partys chances in Oregon. LOL
Well I guess not since you have the idiot in chief Bush as the current picture, and you John as the picture of the future of the Republican party.
I'd say the Smith is pretty despearate to get away from the stench of the party and is willing to hitch it up to Obama and say we can work together. LMAO
Hmmmmmmmmmmm? What message does this send to McCain and Bush?
I'm deserting the sinking ship and changing my uniform to that of the winners.

I can't blame him. He's smart to try to ride Obama's coat-tails.
Meanwhile, republicans in washington state are running away from the "republican" label on ballots:
