Army 'vacuum' missile hits Taliban »
Posted By berkeley 3 months, 3 weeks ago in NewsBritish forces in Afghanistan have used one of the world's most deadly and controversial missiles to fight the Taliban. Apache attack helicopters have fired the thermobaric weapons against fighters in buildings and caves, to create a pressure wave which sucks the air out of victims, shreds their internal organs and crushes their bodies.

What you call a "victim" others call an enemy combatant. As far as "dying several houirs later," that sounds like a fabrication given the apparent nature of the weapon. I doubt death is long in coming if struck by one.

The Taliban's secret code for women and babies is "cover" from the infidels' collective weakness for such "things".
The U.S. military continues to develop smarter and smarter weapons in an overall effort to reduce collateral damage. Furthermore, we put our ground forces at far more risk than their culture would ever contemplate in order to minimize civilian collateral damage. To the Talibani and extremist Islamic culture, civilian deaths are a useful tool of war.

They sound like effective weapons to me. I certainly don't want to have to send allied personnel into those caves to clear them.

"Britain supported a ban on cluster munitions"
Cluster munitions leave bomblets laying around for civilians and children to run afoul of. The same goes for landmines. This is an entirely different type of weapon. It is more like a mini-MOAB.

Now! Now! Normal... such a negative view of peace loving people! We are supposed to catch them, read them their Miranda rights and give them civilian trials, with right of appeal up to the Supreme Court. Then we release them and hope that our good natured tolerance of their different lifestyle will convince them to not shoot at us again. Anyway, if we weren't there, they wouldn't be shooting at us... isn't that the true underlying logic to be applied to this situation?

jim, you're right. If we weren't there they wouldn't be shooting at us there. They'd be shooting at us here. They're a terrorist group who helped support OBL. Remember him? 9-11, USS Cole, Mogadishu, Somalia, and the African embassies? All AlQueda. Based in the Taliban strong hold of Afghanistan. We must fight them there and help the current leadership of Afghanistan. It was a cesspool after the Soviets pulled out and got only worse. Now we have a change to establish 2 democracies, Iraq and Afghanistan. Why do you think Iran has been making so much trouble in the region? Dictatorships have a problem keeping people under their control with free nations surrounding them.

The person who wrote this clearly has little understanding of war. Whether you're in a tank and it's flamed, a cave and they drop napalm or this newer weapon or you have a bomb strapped to your chest, dead is dead. We're fighting an enemy that would require sending ground troops into every spider hole in Afghanistan. If this means we can save even one coalition soldier, then it's worth it. We're not attacking civilians in a market or police station in a populated city. We're taking out AlQueda, Taliban and any number of Islamic brotherhoods bent on taking the rest of the world back the the 13th century.

You know there are others who are not part of that party you hate. Who are making money off this war. So either you biotch about both sides or none at all, it is that simple.
Besides that, people who make the weapons, armor and military vehicles, are you saying they can not make money? You people are really funny sometimes I swear.
You would not hear one person who is not, fighting against this war with words. Who would have loved it, if we used complete brute force in Afghanistan. Then maybe Sadman would have backed off. And we would not be doing what we are doing in Iraq. And then again maybe Iran would have backed off too. But, then again we are talking about the Middle East. And nothing in the way of peace lasts that long in this region.

Why are certain people so concerned as to how you kill the enemy? Humane killing, isn't that like an oxymoron?
Reply-

berkeley3 months, 2 weeks ago
one issue is knowing who the enemy is. to drop a bomb that kills everyone within a large area can only be used, by both tradition and law, if all of those people are members of a military group that you are at war with. otherwise, you are knowingly murdering innocent victims.
there's also the problem of being at war. law has always distinguished just and unjust wars. war crimes are still recognized in every country, and internationally.
atomic weapons necessarily are illegal because they kill everyone in a large area. so does this weapon.

Excellent point berkeley, that is why jimdoze is wrong when he calls this a mini-MOAB. Today this is not a mini-MOAB, it is a small to medium MOAB.
Currently we have the SMAW-NE, a standard USMC Shoulder Mounted Assault Weapon but with a new warhead. Described as NE - "Novel Explosive"- it is a thermobaric mixture which ignites the air, producing a shockwave of unparalleled destructive power, especially against buildings.

Why are we so good at inventing new weapons, but can't come up with an alternative to a $100 tank of gas?
Why are we so good at killing people and breaking stuff, but so sucky at caring for the sick, homeless or elderly?
Priorities.

"Why are we so good at inventing new weapons, but can't come up with an alternative to a $100 tank of gas?"
It's been done, it's called a bicycle and it's called Metro North... or NJ Transit... or....
and, if the price of a tank of gas continues to rise, count on it stimulating the inventive mind mixed with dreams of riches (some would say "greed") for numerous individuals and corporate entities.
Why is it that we can go to the moon, but we can't solve poverty? (circa 1975)
"...so sucky at caring for the sick, homeless or elderly?" is the same tired old question, recycled.
The fact is, all things considered, we are quite good at caring for the sick, homeless and the elderly. Could we do better? I definitely think so. But, it certainly won't happen by taking away the inventive mind through the foreclosure of the dreams of riches.

nor will it happen by killing innocent children, who might have one day invented something, so that those who got rich off the sweat of others can get even richer. killing them, by the way, by first suffocating them, then crushing their organs, then burning the bodies.
if we defeat the armies of terrorism by using tactics more evil than theirs, we will win the battle and lose the war.

War is absolutley a last resort. That being said, once you commit to a war you commit to win that war. You do that by killing as many of the enemy as you can while saving as many of your soldiers lives as possible. Through attrition of the enemy or surrender of your enemy you win the war. War is never pretty and never will be, but once you commit you must go all the way. Otherwise you have wasted the lives of your soldiers for nothing.

I believe the mission in Afghanistan against the Taliban and al qaeda is a noble one...unlike Iraq. If the goal is to kill people, I say use the most efficient and thorough way to do it. I approve of this weapon. However, as with any conflict with civilians in the middle of it, I would hope they would be careful to not kill innocents

When it hits the target, the charge disperses the aluminium powder throughout the target building. The cloud then ignites, causing a massive secondary blast that tears throughout any enclosed space.
The blast creates a vacuum which draws air and debris back in, creating pressure of up to 430lb per sq in. The more heavily the building is protected, the more concentrated the blast.
The cloud of burning aluminium powder means victims often die from asphyxiation before the pressure shreds their organs.

grow up...like it or not there are alot of people out there that want you dead because you are not one of them.there is no talking to these people and no getting along with them.they feel you are required to believe as they believe or die.when they come here those are going to be your choices.frankly any thing that kills them over there is a good thing.

the fact that it is occasionally necessary to defend one's self, and tribe, with violence does not escape me.
that does not mean it is necessary to come up with the cruelest way possible. in fact an ethical person would use no more than the minimum necessary. cuz, ya know, life is precious.
"they feel you are required to believe as they believe or die" that sounds a lot like you.

Cool weapon.
Now we have to make sure we don't use it on a school full of children like the Soviets used to in Chechnya.
