The Taliban are certainly not intimidated by the government forces. If the Americans and NATO forces were to leave, the Taliban would be back in control of the country in just a few days.

Afghanistan is like any other nation.
If the people don't have the urge and drive to win they won't.
I'm sure the Taliban would be back in power almost immediately.
There are those there that prefer the Taliban and their regime to the politics and life style they see as a Democracy.
We have not won the hearts and minds of the common people which is what is needed.
In order to win a war you have to have something people feel is worth dying for.
Sadly with all the garbge going on they are not seeing it from us.
To me it seems as if the people feel they are going from one dominant government to another.
You have to win the hearts and minds or we have the same thing as what happened in Nam.

They probably don't like the Taliban at all, but the Taliban give them the rules, and if they follow them, they'll be safe. The Americans keep changing the rules, or try to operate with no rules at all, and the people understand that we're not going to be around to protect them when the crunch comes.
I was in Vietnam in 1964, when the vaunted "Hearts and Minds Program" went into full swing. It sounded like a good idea, but in practice it was a program which alienated the peasants and taught them to despise the Americans along with their own government. There is, I'm afraid, a great deal more to gaining the confidence of the people than our civilian leders ever realized.

Grenada was a war? Not diluting what you did for your country. But don't go to the VFW and trumpet that.

The difference between you and me youngster is I saw hell, you imagine you did. BTW you would disparage all who fought in Nam because our F'D up politicians of both parties screwed us. You are no vet. You might have been in the service as an REMF. But you are no battle tested blooded soldier or you wouldn't speak like that of those who served and bled for our country.

How many dead from both sides did you see your self a few? Any?
How many bodies blown to shreds beyond recognition? How many friends did you bury as*hole? How many burned to crisp? You know I still have the scars do you?
Did you live with death and the smell that never really leaves you? How many children did you see die or dead?
How many mothers and fathers did you hear cry for their children or spouses?
I just wonder because you talk like you know all about the hells of war and what it takes to win.
Yet what you say shows a complete naivety of the cost of war and what men really go through.

And there are many more who despise the Taliban and its extremely oppressive former rule. I've not read of wholesale dissatisfaction with the Afghanis who gained control after kicking the Taliban's tail.
It should be remembered NATO forces helped the Northern Alliance liberate Afghanistan. If not for the lawless, mountainous area in Pakistan, the Taliban very well might be extinct. They had to resort to a prison break to get many of the same now readying to "battle" NATO forces.

I got a kick out of one of our politicians up here, he was complaining that our intelligence had to be updated as we were not wise to the "surprise" attack on the prison. The Soviets did not make much of an impression on the rebels in Afganistan and for some reason I don't think we will either. WE supported them when they were fighting the Soviets I wonder who is supplying them now.

As we have pointed out before the information gleaned from Curveball did not even exist during the Clinton administration. That was the disputed information Powell gave at the UN regarding chemical and biological weapons, the imminent risk threats. Powell had asked that these references be removed because he wasn't at all sure of their accuracy but there they were back in his speech. Who put them back?
Clinton relied mainly on information supplied by Ahmad Chalabi and the INC (Iranian National Congress), an exile group that was on the US government payroll. Mostly lies as well. He never acted outside of sanctions and no fly zones. Had no imminent plans to do so. The neocons however made the plans while the were on the outside. With Bush the blank slate, ready to be written on regarding foreign policy ("I read a book by Anatoli Scharansky!),the neocons had there perfect dupe.
Sad that you appear to know none of these facts. But that is to be expected....
