The fact that Defense Secretary Robert Gates ousted the Air Force's top military and civilian leaders Thursday, in a historic shake-up, isn't the real story here. The real story is that, after multiple investigations, the Air Force is being held responsible at the highest level for the flight in August '07 of a B-52 bomber armed with six nuclea

Con't: The Air Force is being held responsible at the highest level for the flight in August '07 of a B-52 bomber armed with six nuclear warheads.

Multiple investigations have shown that nukes cannot leave their bunkers without extensive authorization. The latest is the classified report by Admiral Kirkland Donald, of which Gates gave a limited oral summary, covering both the B-52 ioncident and the shipping of nuclear triggers to Taiwan.

It my be significant that Gates chose a Navy officer to investigate the rival branch. It may also be significant that gates' statement said "Donald found a 'lack of effective Air Force leadership oversight' of its nuclear mission. Not that there wasn't oversight, but that the oversight wasn't effective.

It may also be significant that gates said the investigation found "a decline in the Air Force's nuclear mission focus and performance." A lack of focus? Is he suggesting they're focused on some other goal?

Does this have anything to do with the fact that of the six warheads, one of them was "lost" while on the tarmac in Louisiana, and still not recovered? There have been over Air Force 70 firings over this incident, and the investigations aren't over.

FTA: "Donald's investigation found a 'lack of a critical self-assessment culture' in the Air Force, making it unlikely that weaknesses in the way critical materials such as nuclear weapons are handled could be corrected, Gates said."

That sounds to me like the processes are not the problem, but that the personnel are.

The conspiracy minded of you might note that the head of the Air Force base in Minot where the nukes were loaded, who also lost his job, was a golfing buddy of the man who owned the Florida pilot training facility where two of the 9/11 hijackers trained.

The fact that they both attended the same golfing event on that fateful September week, might raise even more eyebrows.

      Hmmm...

Hush, hush. Nukes and their whereabouts are top secret. I don't think we will know anytime in the immediate future about the whole story. Good article.

FTA: "As the Air Force's senior uniformed leader, I take full responsibility for events which have hurt the Air Force's reputation or raised a question of every airman's commitment to our core values," Moseley said.

Now if only politicians thought this way, "The Buck Stops Here" must mean cheney is deer hunting

OY... We should learn how to police ourselves first, before taking on the world. We have manufactured and sold more wmd than any other nation -- besides having more wmd than any other country. How does that appear to the rest of the world? Would you think it might make them feel a bit uneasy?

This business is quite fishy... (gone fission?). I suspect there is more to this than a few scapegoats. It's just unimaginable these men are so incompetent. There's more.

Just a guess. Two decent, patriotic men have to fall on their sword to protect our brave VP, 5-deferment Cheney.

What would guarantee the continuation of Cheney's plans for "regime change" throughout the mideast? What would be required to shock Americans into accepting another turn of the screw in the loss of their own democracy as the Iraq lies become ever clearer? Wouldn't we need another "event" of considerably greater magnitude than 9/11?
