"The analysis was in stark contrast to US and British security analysts' and intelligence agencies' conclusions, based on the same data. The US and British experts have concluded the threat of terrorism, particularly Islamic terrorism, is on the rise.

The study pointed to more widespread and coordinated counterterrorism efforts, "bitter doctrinal infighting" within the global Islamist networks, and Muslims' rejection of terrorists' "indiscriminate violence, extremist ideology and harshly repressive policies" for the downswing.

After looking at the results of polls carried out last year in the Arab and Muslim world, especially in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, the report said that support for terrorism appeared to be waning."

"For Mack, the drop in popularity for al-Qaeda in the Arab and Muslim world was due to the rejection of extremist ideology, particularly after "the terror groups' gratuitous and indiscriminate violence against their co-religionists".

"By deeply alienating the very publics whose support is critical to their cause, the Islamists have become their own worst enemies and created conditions that will likely bring about their eventual demise."

At some point you have to figure Muslims are going to get sick of getting blown up by other Muslims.

Well this I find very strange, while I have never seen "Nixie the Nymph" bad mouth or put down my country, I do wonder how many that do, will come and take this BS as valid statement.

First of all, it comes from a university, a den of liberals according to Republicans, secondly, from Canada another den of liberal socialist commies; but it supports a view that is favourable to Reps so it will be taken as an honest report.

No one ever remembers OBL statement that al-qaeda said at the onset of the Iraq invasion that they preferred to fight on their home turf and bleed USA dry; which they are doing.

And after fighting the most modern and well trained armed force in the world for 5 years, I should hope that USA is winning, otherwise all those million and billion dollar war toys were a rip off to the American tax payer; but someone got rich

Al Qaeda has been routed in Iraq and Afghanistan. But for the lawless region in Pakistan where coalition forces are not allowed to go, Al Qaeda would be wiped from the planet.

Interesting to note you do not trust info coming from your own nation. It corroborates info coming from several other sources as well.

        "...someone got rich."

That would be U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat and member of the Appropriations Committee, who was caught red-handed funneling defense contracts to companies represented by her hubby.

AlphaGnosis posted an article, "Al-Qaida on ropes: Bin Laden is losing"

      http://news.propeller.com/story/2008/06/02/al-q...

Comment from not2needy: "I am a skeptic, and i don't believe anything that comes from the lips of anyone from the Bush admin, but i hope this is true."

Comment from hamy: "Didn't VP Cheney say the exact same thing three years ago? Or was it four years ago. That the insurgency was in it's "last throws" and that defeat was forthcoming?"

Anything that comes from an American group or a US government agency is immediately discounted by those on the left. I think this study by a Candaian entity should give them a chance to consider the info rather than focusing on bashing the source.

It is not that this is a leftist view in my mind, it is that the army did its job, and are now trying to do what they are not trained to do, a political settlement.

An army backed Gov. is a puppet Gov or a junta, and in no way is that Democracy.

After 5 tears, I should hope that the most modern equipped fighting force on this planet is winning, but it seems to me, until you can get some politics working. you are winning the fight but losing the war.

Seems it is like a whack a mole game, they keep popping up everywhere you are not, especially when allies like Pakistan harbour them.

I am personally a little skeptical about our success on the battle field as it concerns the insurgents in Iraq.

This could be nothing more than the other side waiting to see who will be the democratic candidate for president then responding accordingly.

They already know what Insane McCain will do. Fight them every step of the way for ever how long it takes.

The Hill has already indicated that she would be willing to put a major hurt on Iran, the major source of insurgent resupply, training and funding, if she becomes president. This will lead to 4 to 8 more yrs of a draining and highly visible insurgent war for Iran and their ally Syria in Iraq.

However, Barak has indicated that he will talk without preconditions to Iran and other terrorists govts/orgs and that more than likely the US military will be totally pulled out of Iraq and poss the Middle East. Which would allow a quick overthrow of the Iraqi govt by the insurgents and quickly make Iraq a de facto possession of Iran.

Also, another fact that the Iranians and Insurgents are well aware of, is what happened to the American war effort in Vietnam after the Tet Offensive.

In that situation the American forces had won a major field victory over the NVA that had in reality almost crippled North Vietnam's ability to effect a military change of govt in South Vietnam. However the American press fed the whole affair to the American public as a major defeat for the total American military effort in Vietnam. Which lead to a dicy social and political situation that lead to our eventual pull out and turned a sure defeat for the Communists into a total victory for them.

If nothing else, I would expect the Iranians and jihadists to do something along the same lines to control the 'image' of who is winning and not winning in Iraq. For they know that the American public and therefore America's politicians are driven by image and opinion and not facts.

If it worked for Ho Chi Min it will work for the Iranians.

Icono, you have hit the nail squarely with both of your posts! One factor I would add is that the Iranians could not take the Kurds in the north. The Kurds would attempt independence since there would be no other choice. The Turks will respond by taking the north since they will never allow an independent Kurdistan... taking also the northern oil fields, which they consider rightfully theirs in the first place, as recompense for their troubles.

In so many ways, pulling out of Iraq could be not be a better set up for WWIII!

I would add that if McCain is elected this situation would fade away for at least 4 years and what we are positing here would appear as just so much speculation. To me, this is the primary issue in the coming election... by far!

This may or may not be good news. Keep in mind that militant Islam has declared jihad upon infidels (nonbelievers) since the 7th century. And unlike many in the West, they are willing to be patient in following their orders to impose sharia on the entire world. We can't afford to let our guards down, lest we get a repeat of 9/11, Madrid, London, Bali...
