Strange as it sounds, nearly seven years into the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, bullets are a controversial subject for the U.S. The smaller, steel-penetrating M855 rounds continue to be a weak spot in the American arsenal. They are not lethal enough to bring down an enemy decisively, and that puts troops at risk, according to Associated Press inte

Fired at short range, the M855 round is prone to pass through a body like a needle through fabric. That does not mean being shot is a pain-free experience. But unless the bullet strikes a vital organ or the spine, the adrenaline-fueled enemy may have the strength to keep on fighting and even live to fight another day.

In 2006, the Army asked a private research organization to survey 2,600 soldiers who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nearly one-fifth of those who used the M4 and M16 rifles wanted larger caliber bullets.

Yet the Army is not changing. The answer is better aim, not bigger bullets, officials say.

Armies need to be able to adapt to the environment they are thrust into. They must be able to adapt their weapons to that environment to be effective and when the process to change to newer and more effective bullets are ignored or countermanded by military brass who have a connection to the industry supplying the military, then you have a distain for our troops and their safety.

Bullet? I prefer cartridge, as the cartridge case contains the propellant, and what it propels is the projectile. The amount and type of propellant helps determines muzzle velocity of the projectile. Weight of the projectile (lbs) times the velocity in feet per second equals foot/pounds of energy. A larger projectile, especially a soft pointed one, that mushrooms out will tear the hell out of flesh and bone. Why the popularity 30.06 rifle with a soft nosed projectile for big game?

I was in Korea, carried a M1 Garand Rifle, full combat load. I was 5'7", 127 lbs, soaking wet. We got wimps today? In close combat, the Thompson Sub was the automatic weapon you wanted. Incedentaly, you can bend the barrel of an M16 without half trying. I know, I gauged those cap guns for 20 years for the US Army Reserve. CEH DAC USAR
