Posted by: NewsLine 3 months, 1 week agoRussia forces the USA out from the traditional arms market. Russia has won a 4-billion-dollar contract with Saudi Arabia in a competition with the USA and France. This achievement of the Russian defense complex can be explained by both the high quality of the national military hardware defense equipment and the blunders of its Western competitors.

I suspect the Saudis see the US as the threat in the region today. Part of their preparations for possible conflict and a new economic path into the future include the forging of new alliances with America's, I'd like to say former but I won't be so naive, enemies.
On another somewhat related matter, in the aftermath of China's devastating earthquake in Sichuan province, which seems to have, unsurprisingly, all but vanished from the front pages of Western media, Saudi Arabia has offered 60 million US dollars cash in aid, and 10 million dollars worth of relief materials. Strengthening ties with China is a priori.
How much has the US offered? The nation that makes no bones about repeatedly self-proclaiming it is the world's most generous nation, the sum is a paltry half a million.
There's very little mileage and publicity in being overly generous to the country it demonises the most.

Reminds me of the Bush I trip to Japan to try to get them to buy more American cars, (remember he threw up at a state dinner), it turned out American car companies sent cars over with the steering wheel on the wrong side for driving in Japan...and couldn't figure out why they weren't selling. How much do those execs pay themselves for their brilliance?)

I sometimes wondered when the Saudis would start turning away from the extremely close ties it has had with the US what with the Saudi people's unhappiness with the aid that the US gives Israel. I thought that it would be just a matter of time before the Saudi government started loosening those ties. Maybe this is the first sign of the loosening. But I also find it curious that Saudi Arabia would turn to the 'godless' communist Russia what with the country being the center of Islam with Mecca, Medina and the Hadj. But then again, Russia has loosened its restraints on religion in the country.
