Mental illnesses usually have physical causes, not environmental ones. Post Traumatic stress is one of the few exceptions, but that leads to physical responses resulting in mental illness.

Most mental illnesses are treatable with medication and therapy.

In case after case, family members of the mentally ill tell them to straighten up or get over it. We're not informed enough to know when to make the call for help. There are so many variables mainly because no 2 people and their symptoms are alike. The military contributes to the highest overall % of sudden mental illness, with good reason.
