How disgusting. 22,000 people are DEAD.

I don't think you understand the gravity of this situation. 9-11 was only 3,000. This is almost 10 times worse. Understand?

Get off your high horse.

avatar
Reply

Actually, now they are saying could be 50,000 dead.

9/11 was completely different than a natural disaster. Comparing them really doesn't make sense.

avatar
Reply

They are both a disaster but you are partially right. This is much much worse and we are ignoring it.

The world reacted with enormous generosity towards us when we had a tragedy. Now this idiot wouldn't want to return the same favor? How sad.

avatar
Reply

"we are ignoring it"?????

I'm not certain how you reached that conclusion

The White House:the US will send more than $3 million to help victims in Myanmar, up from an initial emergency contribution of $250,000.

Bush said in the Oval Office. "We're prepared to move U.S. Navy assets to help find those who have lost their lives, to help find the missing, to help stabilize the situation. But in order to do so, the military junta must allow our disaster assessment teams into the country."

Pentagon: Geoff Morrell said a variety of Navy ships are within reach of Myanmar, including two aircraft carriers as well as a command ship, the USS Blue Ridge, with the capability to coordinate the movement and activities of naval vessels.

USS Essex amphibious assault ship has 23 helicopters aboard, including 19 that are capable of lifting cargo from ship to shore.

It's difficult to help if they won't let anyone in!

I'm completely right. 9/11 was a continuation of deliberate attacks on innocent Americans. Natural disasters have no conscience - or lack thereof - motivating them. Natural disasters are indiscriminate.

We provided the lion's share of aid during the tsunami tragedy and will again during this one. We don't owe any nation. We do so out of inherent American goodness as we always have.

avatar
Reply

What you don't seem to remember is that Bush DIDN'T give support to the tsunami until he was pressured to do so.

Remember? He had only pledged a very small amount until Britain way outdid him and he had to step up and help.

What a pathetic little man he is. You must look up to him.

avatar
Reply

How can you help when their government doesn't want it? And we are sending aid aren't? Man, what a hater.

avatar
Reply

I have plenty of reasons to hate him. The biggest one is that he hates me. He has tried to make my life a living hell since he took office. I don't take kindly to that.

avatar
Reply

How sad for those people.

Those in the world that have the means to help others in their time of need should do so. If I remember we were helped after 9/11.

Life works this way, you go to the rich uncle not the poor one for monitory help during tough times.

Yes we have wasted much and have sent too much to those we shouldn't have in the past, yes we have helped many times. That's what we are supposed to do as the richest nation on the planet, it's called KARMA. Isn't it? If not us then who can send the help needed to a nation that has lost 22,000 or more people? There are times when selfishness or inserting politics into a situation is wrong headed.

avatar
Reply

I really think it's worse , figure 1/4 of all population stay at that place , nearly 5 millions...

avatar

$3 million is ONE PENNY each. About the cost of one advanced missile used in Iraq.

I'm happy to increase my ante to a WHOLE TEN CENTS (and still contribute to the American Red Cross).

The real problem is not the generosity of the U.S. Citizens, but the whims of the "leadership" of Myanmar.

maybe, but its not what you say, but how you say it

Better to send a few hundredths of a percent of our money to help cyclone victims, and thus gain some points with the rest of the world, (which can translate into diplomatic and trade leverage),

- than to drop it as bombs on neighborhoods in Iraq.

Of course, even better would be to spend it on something like health or housing or education or roads in the US.

You offered no links or source to your statement that the politicos who do this, get kickbacks.

And government, like any illness, can ALWAYS get worse.

avatar

And--you believe all the reports ver-batum??? The way our gov has lied to us in the recent past???

avatar

Myanmar is one of the most difficult places for journalists to work in. The country is totally closed up from the rest of the world by its government and I hope, that this terrible cyclone will be the start of an opening-process. We regarded in North Korea, how financial or material help can slightly change a political strategy of closure and isolation. At first, everything must be done for the surviving victims. This has to be independent from an amelioration of the political system. In a second step, changes might follow!

What's so tragic is that the populace had little or no warning so that they can prepare and safeguard themselves. Truly sad indeed.

avatar
Reply

True, BB.

Seems like a dreadful combination of coastal mangrove-swamp depletion and woeful lack of early warning systems contributed to the scale of destruction.

Against this background it IS possible to argue that this disaster was not entirely a "natural" one.

There is a bit of a twist to this story.

"Bush spoke at a ceremony where he signed legislation awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to Burmese democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi."

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest in Burma for the last 18 years. She has earned the Noble Peace Prize and gobs of other awards for her nonviolent stance for democracy.

She basically has been Ticking off the military junta in power for a while.

http://uscampaignforburma.org/blog/2008-sen-fei...

She won the election for Prime Minister in 1990.

Her dad Aung San, negotiated Burma's independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, and was assassinated by his rivals in the same year.

I believe she would have forgiven us if we had sat on the medal until her countrymen had a chance to bury their dead and figure out the basics.

Spammer?

In my mind the thoughts I put forth where related.

A single Salvo of patriot Missiles costs more than the aid offered. And they have no proof that they can hit there targets.

Mixing the aid with a political agenda, in my mind, is wrong.

The links are there for folks that either wish to read more or do not believe my words.

Personally I like to see where other folks are getting their information.

Is it your desire for me to consider your thoughts insignificant?

Provide me with an argument, instead of ticking me off. The man I run from ain't been born and his mothers long gone dead.

Has anyone heard any of the world's religious leaders screaming that God is angry at Burma and this is his retribution, like they did with the U.S. after Katrina? When's the Pope going to weigh in, and the Dalai Lama?

It's amazing how humans are that get together on political blogs. No matter what the topic, even a tragedy such as this one, they can't seem to help but take any circumstance or situation and interject a shot at their personal pet project, pet peeve, hated politician/religion or social issue.

It makes me wonder why people don't have the ability to understand there are times that those things are inappropriate or the ability to have the wisdom to turn it off, because the time and place is elsewhere and not in the moment at hand or the topic at hand.

Is it just me? Can anyone shed a little light for the confused and saddened lil monkey?

Hoo Boy! Al Gore just said on NPR that Global Warming caused the cyclone! What an idiot! That slimo won't stop at anything to push his BS. A CNN meteorologist in October and many, many others in the scientific community say hurricanes and cyclones have nothing to do with "global warming."

Check out the story here ...

This is Sad another natural disaster, ------- Around the world problems are rising... Food Crises, Infaltion, Dollar Value is decreasing, Oil prices are rising, Stock exchanges are falling, health care companies are making Billios, Country on war with AFGANISTAN, IRAQ now bush is planning to invade Iran without any evidence again fooling americans and rest of the world like he did before invading iraq about WMD, at the end of the day we as people are doing nothing------ Just think about it.

"now bush is planning to invade Iran "

He is? Man, you nutscapers will cling to anything to perpetuate your hate. Not you really need to hate that much?

Is there a more hypocrite President in this world than George Bush?

On the one hand, he is bombing houses, hospitals and schools in Baghdad killing thousands of innocent civilians.

On the other hand, he is offering aid to cyclone victims in Burma.

Mr. President, in case you don't know, all lives are precious whether it is Iraq or Burma.

avatar
Reply

I don't know about Bush, but you sure are a hypocrite. How will you tie it in to Israel and your anti-Semitic rants?

avatar
Reply

Tell that to the Iraqi's, or Muslims in general. It would seem it matters more whether your a Sunni or Shia then if your human.

avatar
Reply

Why bring Israel here. I was only referring to Iraq and Burma. Stay on the subject.

avatar
Reply

When was Iraq ever the subject? Maybe you should take your own advice.

avatar
Reply

Iraq became a subject naturally. You cannot bomb and kill innocent people in one country and offer help to people in other country.

I just exposed the hypocrisy of the country, its people (like the post earlier) and their President.

avatar
Reply

It became a subject because you made it one. You want hypocrisy. You demanding the death of every jew and then demanding the we help Burma. Now thats hypocrisy. By the way where is the money from your terrorist brothers? Why aren't you demanding their help? Oh, thats right. They need the money to put bombs on their children so they can kill each other.

avatar
Reply

"became a subject naturally"

That is to funny, man, do you realize how full of crap you are?

avatar
Reply

"Iraq became a subject naturally. You cannot bomb and kill innocent people in one country and offer help to people in other country. "

America does it *all* the time. So to say you cannot do it isn't being honest. To say that it's hypocritical is.

avatar
Reply

We may bomb and help but what about your buddies that just bomb. Have you or your terrorists buddies ever helped anyone? I mean besides handing out burqa's and suicide belts.

avatar
Reply

Way off topic, here, crghss, but you posited an interesting question: "Have your terrorist buddies ever helped anyone?"

Take a look at Hamas, the Palestinian group many label as terrorist. The principal reason for their electoral victory (a democratic one) was their social work and assistance among dispossed Palestinians, together with their general honesty -- in stark contrast to the hopelessly corrupt PLO -- and effective organization among a population in dire need.

So yes, these "terrorists" at least do help someone.

avatar
Reply

To say Nikkibabe and Dionys are morons for their continually inane, baseless rants about Bush, America and Iraq is 100% dead-on right.

Why don't you two just go join the terrorists you love so much and see how long you last? I offered to join the military, but age and education and metal in my body worked against that. Put your actions where your mouths are -- go join the terrorists you love so much. Go ahead and take up arms against the coalition forces. See who comes out on top and who gets buried in a mound of sand.

" Can not bomb innocent people""" Is that what you said???

Tell that to the 9-11 "bombers"

Hey All,

I think you all need to watch

"Loose Change" on Google Videos then you will realize that 9 1 1 was inside job, that U.S Gov did to endorse war on IRaq, Afgan etc.. I mean just imagine if someone comes in your house and arrest you because they think you are bad and have some weapons without any evidence. IS that good or Bad?? The Government controls the media they want you to see what they want to show you, There are many things which are not reported, have you ever thought why?? I hope after watching that video you think again with open mind about 9 1 1 and our Government.
