REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) - Bobby Fischer, the reclusive American chess master who became a Cold War icon when he dethroned the Soviet Union's Boris Spassky as world champion in 1972, has died. He was 64. Fischer died Thursday in a Reykjavik hospital, his spokesman, Gardar Sverrisson, said. There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

He was a brilliant chess master but he won't be missed by many due to his personality.

Great with the chess moves, but, apparently, not so with the health ones.

Sounds like he watched a lot from the Hamas Channel.

"Checkmate" = "Shah Mat" - The king is dead...

That's the common etymology. I disagree. Shah Maat is a corruption of the Egyptian "Sia Maat" - which roughly translates as " by the command or the intelligence of Maat" ie cosmic justice.

The king is dead. Long live the king!

I read the article. I remember his famous matches with Spassky. I had not previously heard or read about his anti-semitism or anti-U.S. rants.

No doubt about his brilliance and sheer genius at Chess. But it would appear that he was more than a little quirky in his political views. Not unlike other geniuses of our century.

In the photograph he looked at least 75. Bobby Fischers 'idosyncracies' are not unusual among chess champions. He may have been an autistic savant.

He was not noted as a nice man, but he was a chess genius.

The world of competitive chess is not a perfect one. It produces a lot of shattered crystal....

There is some rumor that BF's father was CIA. Kasparov has probably been "commissioned". Poor Bobby appears to have been played like a pawn - just like arch rival Boris Spassky. If you ramble through the names of famous chess players you will note a number of top notch ideologues. The board, the game and the people who play it are not as innocent as it seems. Chess and other board games are my historical specialization. That is this dog's gambit, and probably 'nuff said for one day...

He used his gift at playing a game to spread hate in the real world - good riddance

Your objection to hatred is highly selective. You have no objection to Jewish hatred or politically correct hatred. Nowadays, not hating the right people is hatred.

It appears to me at least that when Bobby attempted to claw back some of his personal life from his "handlers" things began to go foul. I don't condone his anti-semite or anti American remarks, but this was a man who's genius was manipulated and celebrity exploited on several levels. A bird in a gilded cage, he tactlessly and often tastelessly lashed out at the people and the government he perceived to be the cause of his difficulties. I do not deny him his personal perspective - nor do I dance over his grave. I would rather take the time to understand him in his full complexity since the politics of chess obviously played a part in destabilizing a genius who was never given an opportunity to develop beyond the point of adolescent immaturity and began life in familial surroundings that made for an emotional escape into chess. And - he was not the first - nor will he be the last.

He was an absolute genius at chess. He had a few idiosyncrasies before he went into retirement but after that he became more weird as time went on. Reminded me of Howard Hughs. His hate talk became worse and worse. He turned into a despicable man. The pictures of him make him look much older than he was. Sick mind and body. The chess world will mourn the loss of the player but not the man.

I've played some of this guy's recorded games. It seemed supernatural how he could destroy and humiliate his opponent, and, yet, he ended up with such bizarre thinking. I've studied other people like him for some answers, which, just created more questions. I mean, in cases like him, IS he a genius, or, a conduit? And, IF a conduit, a conduit of what?
