Researchers at Ashland University urged the Consumer Products Safety Commission to issue a speedy recall for some fake plastic teeth and Halloween baskets, CBS News reported Monday

The head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission opposes legislation designed to strengthen the powers of her agency and increase her budget for staffing and inspections, preferring to leave such matters to the businesses themselves, implying such legislation would impose an undue burden on industry.

CPSC chief Nancy A. Nord "criticized the measure in letters sent late last week and this afternoon to the Democratic leaders of the committee. She was critical, for instance, of a provision to ban lead from all toys. She said that the proposal to raise the potential penalty to $100 million 'may have the undesired consequence of firms, as a precautionary measure, flooding the agency with virtually every consumer complaint and incident.' "
It's a truly scary Halloween world we live in.

It's everywhere! Oh MY GOD! Run for the hills, if it isn't Global Warming, the lead will get you. And if it isn't lead, the second hand smoke...and if it isn't the second hand smoke it will be the trans-fats...if it isn't the trans fats, it's the red meat...
What they usually don't point out is that a child would have to sit there with one of the toys in their mouth for hours before any contamination would occur. So the teeth might actually be a danger but how many kids are going to chew on a plastic bucket?

Makes you long for the days of razor blades in the carmel apples.
Actually the razor blade story is a urban myth. I mean comon on. Who actuall ate their carmel apples? We used them as projectiles for one coming bag snatching kids.

OK - while I don't like having lead in kids toys, at least in THIS CASE Halloween is pretty much just ONE DAY. If there's a bit of lead in little Johnnie's fake vampire teeth, at least he'll only be exposed to it for a short while. I wonder if maybe someone isn't getting carried away just a bit here? Come on, I played with mercury when I was a kid -- and I'm OKkkkkkkkk... - oops - just a short spasm, pay no attention...{8>D)=
