News – The Federal Communications Commission, hoping to reduce the rising costs of cable television, is preparing to strike down thousands of contracts this week that gave individual cable companies exclusive rights to provide service to an apartment building, the agency's chairman says.
Why can't cable companies offer each of their 200 or so channels with a price and a homeowner can then select the channels he wants, add up the prices and that's what he pays for the month. Package deals could be offered. I watch maybe 3 or 4 channels at most but have to pay to have 97 other channles available. I was even charged an additional amount for a new sports channel that I have no interest in watching. But my only other choice is to have 100 channels with satellite TV at almost the same price as cable. Something must be done to rein in these costs.
Time Warner. Uhhhhh!!!! They suck and so does their service. But with no competiton we are left with no choices. That is completely against the capitalist theory of competition fuels prices by supply and demand. Of course with the politicians not caring about their constituents. What can we expect? Thanks for the story engineer.
Speaking of bad service. An elderly couple ordered Comcast's new 3 way service: cable, phone and internet connection. On the scheduled day of installation, no one showed up. They went to Comcast the next day to complain and asked to speak to the manager. They were told that the manager was busy and to wait outside the building (in the 95deg heat). 3 hours later, someone pops her head out the window and tells them the manager left for the day. Next day, the 75 yr old woman goes back to Comcast with a hammer and proceeds to smash the receptionist's keyboard, monitor and phone and exclaims: 'do I have your attention now?'. This happened in Manassas, VA. The woman was arrested and fined but received dozens of supporting calls and letters from other irate Comcast customers.
I for one would like to see an open market to other potential cable companies so that Bronx Cablevision isn't the only one that is trying to hog the limelight. I am paying waaaaaaay too much as it is! I want the option to seek other cable companies with much more reasonable rates that I can afford, and with more bang for my buck$!
We have one line for just the net, that I'm on now. And another for a tv package that we can all watch separately in our rooms, as I have roommates so a satellite /w a splitter (which we had before) just isn't practical.
We use our pc's for movies in our bedrooms w/ a good program & adapters ... but really, we all chip in for cable for the hockey package, basically.

The new rule could open markets across the country to far-ranging competition. It would also be a huge victory for Verizon Communications and AT&T, which have challenged the cable industry by offering their own video services. The two companies have lobbied aggressively for the provision. They have been supported in their fight by consumer groups, satellite television companies and small rivals to the big cable providers.
Commission officials and consumer groups said the new rule could significantly lower cable prices for millions of subscribers who live in apartment buildings and have had no choice in selecting a company for paid television. Government and private studies show that when a second cable company enters a market, prices can drop as much as 30 percent.
Why does it always takes a big corporation to lobbies to do something that is right?
Cable monopolies should end everywhere!
It is no different Comcast, Insight, TW, Cablevision, or local phonecompanies who are refusing to provide DSL unless you spend $40 for landline. Competition is needed. Government sponsored monopolies bad news for consumer.
Here's a thought. Why, after paying around $70 per month, am I forced to watch commercials?
