Palestinian militants fired a Katyusha rocket deep into southern Israel on Sunday, the army and police said, showing an ability to extend the range of rocket attacks from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

"Gaza militants usually fire crude rockets that have a maximum range of about 9 km (5.5 miles) into Israel, but rarely go beyond 3 km (2 miles). The Grad-type Katyusha, originally Soviet-designed, landed some 11 km (6.5 miles) inside Israel."
"The Katyusha slammed into an open field, causing a brush fire but no injuries," a police spokesman said.

"Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has said Israel is considering a sweeping military operation in the Gaza Strip to counter the almost daily rocket salvoes. Israel also has threatened to cut power it supplies to the territory unless the attacks ceased.
With a U.S.-sponsored Middle East conference expected to be held next month, Israel has so far stuck to limited ground raids and air strikes against militants."
Last week Palestinian President Abbas declared that he "had power to stop the attacks". The "almost daily rocket salvoes" mean that either he (Abbas) lied and he did not have such power or, alternatively, that he said the truth and he is UNWILLING to stop terrorist attacks.
In both cases, it means that it makes no sense to negotiate with Abbas or his "government". It also means that the U.S.-sponsored Middle East conference expected to be held next month will be a flop.

  You are right anything the US initiate in the name of peace will be a flop in the Middle East because there is no credibility in anything America does.
  They will come up with a longer range to teach the Israelis a lesson which they will never forget. Recently how many Palestinian have been killed by the Israelis rocket attacks? Do you keep an account on that as you keep the Palestinian rocket attack account on Israel? You are just trying to buy sympathy for Israel, if they don't attack Israel who are they going to get back their legitimate right to their land, will they just hand everything over to them, the way they took their land by force and say sorry for everything they had done to them?

The Israelis have tanks, jets, helicopters, artillery, every modern weapon in America's arsenal. Maybe they need to start actually trying to negotiate peace. The Palestinians are obviously NOT going to go into the gas chambers quietly.

  Don't you remember? There were no gas chambers or holocaust according to Muslim history books. However, Israel should cut all of the electricity, running water, and sewage that they supply. They should leave the residents of Gaza in the same position that they found them in 1967- poverty striken with no electricity, clean water or sewage. Egypt did absolutely nothing for the people, and as long as the rockets continue to be fired, the people don't deserve even the basic luxuries. Yes, electricity and running water is a luxury. People live without it in most of the third world and lived without it for thousands of years before it was invented. More garbage from Johnbbbs. Israel doesn't get everything from the American arsenal. It manufactures it's own assault rifles, tanks, missles, satellites, at least one version of attack aircraft (Kfir) and much more under US license. Let the Palestinians build their own electric power plants and water purification plants.

    As far as peace goes, historically Israel has tried and been turned down ever since before 1948. They've won every war and been refused peace. Those that they have been able to make peace with, that peace has lasted with no violations on either side for almost 30 years. Arafat was given almost everything that he wanted and turned it down. Now it's the Palestinians turn to make peace. Only a fool would continue to cry for a state of their own and sabotage it at every opportunity. Historically, Arabs have not been peace initiators, just terrorists- Look at the UN records on genocide by the Moslems since 1960 alone.

        In whose world do you live? Not in any world that historians live in. You must have learned your history from the same Muslim historians who claim that Mohammad was born in Mecca and ascended to heaven on a magical horse with the head of a woman, wings of an eagle and tail of a peacock. You live in which century? Btw, Israel never denied attacking the Liberty, but that has nothing to do with the fact that Israel was attacked by Egypt and Syria in 1973. The Liberty was an American ship, and unless I am historically incorrect, Israel and the US were not at war with each other, nor did the incident provoke a war. Take a history course. You are patently one of the most ignorant people that I have ever seen posting.

        Oh yes, sure. Can you tell us the REASONS Israel attacked the US Ship LIBERTY? After all, there HAD to be reasons Israelis decided to attack a ship belonging to it's only ally, had not they?

        The attack on the Liberty is exactly why the Arabs fought with Israel, they were standing in solidarity with their American brothers against Israel's plans to be pushed into the med.

The Liberty incident didn't occur until the war was well underway for several days. Who teaches you your history- the Iranian President? And I thought Johnbbbs was the most ignorant person posting.   Is not it amazing that the Palestinian losses in the terrorist war known as the Intifadah were TWO(!) per day. One would assume that maybe Israelis need to start actually FIGHTING killing not TWO but TWO THOUSAND Palestinians a day in order to convince the Palestinians to agree to negotiate peace. It seems that the Palestinians are happy with the results of the Intifadah and their TWO losses per day. They're willing the war to continue.
