The latest recall affects packages sold in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime Provinces in Canada and in Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee starting around Sept. 8, said Marty Ordman, a Dole spokesman.
Eighty-eight cases â;; or 528 bags â;; were distributed in Canada, and 755 cases containing 4,530 bags were distributed in the U.S., he said. FDA spokesman Michael Herndon said the agency was talking with Westlake Village, Calif.-based Dole about the situation.
The romaine, green leaf and butter lettuce hearts that went into the blend were grown in California, Colorado and Ohio, then processed at Dole's plant in Springfield, Ohio, on Sept. 6, according to Ordman.

I don't know how much human contact our salads have after being picked in the fields (often by filthy hands) but Americans seem oblivious to the germs that can be passed on by dirty hands. China eliminated bird flu by having people wash hands and wear masks. Often, I see women leave public toilets without washing, & I just read on this site that men are notorious for not washing. We can protect ourselves to a degree: 1. carry antiseptic wipes & use one if you can't wash 2. Use one to wipe off table in public eatery before eating--most are swarming with germs 3. wipe off grocery cart handles & especially seats and areas that your toddler would touch. 4. wash all produce, & peel it if possible 5. Use plastic gloves to handle meats; have a special cutting board, cook thoroughly. (I wash off my gloves before removing them.) We're getting exotic, drug resistant diseases, plus TB (not curable) and viruses. It's time to protect ourselves.

We as a society have gotten use to having everything pre-packaged for us to make our time less in the kitchen .
We pay more for this procedure and get less as in what you would pay for produce if you were to simply buy it by the pound or the old fashion way ....a head of lettuce.
I love to make a big salad, wash all the veggies,cut everything up and mix it myself !

You are taking a HUGE risk when buying these pre-made salads and other vegetables.
I will only have salad if I purchase a whole head of lettuce along with other items so that I can peel off a couple layers of leaves to get rid of bacteria, pesticides, herbicides, etc.
BTW, never trust industry when it comes to your lives.

I remember when food quality wasn't a topic of conversation. My, how quickly things have changed. I see the FDA is doing a bang up job, after the spinach scare, and before that the green onion scare. I guess it's time to start growing my own lettuce and spinach.

Just imagine what the produce pickers are doing in the fields and then not washing their hands. It can also be factory workers or contaminated soil gets into the plant machinery.
There are many ways to contaminate food.
Any one remember the religious sect that tried to poison produce.....I can't remember how long ago that was.

I admit, I buy those pre-packeaged salads. I don't always have time to do the whole "salad" thing, and it's very convenient to have it all chopped up for you. I can toss it in a tupperware and go. But I always wash it first, even though it says "Ready to Eat" on the package. I can't stand the thought of eating something that I don't know for certain has been thoroughly washed.
But there have been too many E. Coli outbreaks, I don't plan on buying them again. I will get a whole head of lettuce and chop it up myself and stick it in a ziplock bag. I should be able to find five minutes sometime during the week to do that. Right??? Lol!

There is something in those pre-package bags. I was able to taste it when they first started with bagging it. I use to run produce in a store. The taste off the head of lettuce is better. I found that by pulling the bad leaves off leaf by leaf that what you have left over, keeps better. You rinse the head well with cold water and never remove the core. Break it off at the bottom of the core. Store it sopping wet in a plastic bag of your own. I usually pop a few holes in the bag, drain it a little before the refrigerator. We make our salad by the leaf. Cutting it makes it turn reddish brown. Tomatoes keep better with the stem on and out of the fridge, in a dark ventilated place.

In today`s world, food is no more good. Every piece of something contains a lot of chemicals, even bread. In my city the bread has three E`s. So my hopes are very low. Think about it. If even the bread has E`s?
