No, this report from the Associated Press (which also interviews the man behind the hack) doesn't break the middleman rule - going to Hotz's blog without any context and background would leave the average reader thoroughly confused.
And as a sidenote - while this procedure will unlock the iPhone from ATT, it is by no means an easy hack. Your average Jo Schmo has NO clue how to use a soldering iron or manipulate firmware. I cant imagine the average consumer who just threw down 600 bucks on an iPhone is going to run to crack the thing open and void the warranty on it.

"Some of my friends think I wasted my summer but I think it was worth it,"
Let's see, high bid on E-bay over twelve thousand dollars, news coverage showing him to be a big geek (i.e. a good hire by tech companies), yeah, I think it was probably worth it.
I wouldn't be surprised if this kid was offered 6 figures without even going to college.

Amazing kids these days. Computers took up an entire room when I was a kid. Now people are talking on small computers and also using it as a telephone! Alexander Graham Bell would be proud!

This may get the wireless industry to be more giving to its customers rather than the stranglehold they have now on phones.

I have to say that if I needed a brain doc (which I might just be needing already...3 teens in the house), this kid, should he stick to his chosen education, would definitely be someone that I would go see!

No, no no, some of us actually do work and actually do save and do not rely on mommy and daddy to get our stuff. That's how I got my iPhone, getting paid to Blog FTW!

At least he wasn't sitting on his fat arse down at the Mall.
More power to young hackers , the first true counter culture since the 60's. Wait till some one jams mainstream media in the US.

WELL now that the cat out of the bag, what we going to do? If the wrong people get they hand on it,wow. That why some smart people need to learn to keep their mind close and not give everything away, why do you think that there is a God.Now all you did was become part of the problems(evil).

To the young man, I say go for it my friend! Who the flip cares about an absurdly expensive cell phone that basically does what a free one will do anyway?! We should all be grateful to this kid for making a joke of what so many misguided people find important!
