Cop killer dies after transfer to prison »
Posted by: SusanParrish 1 year agoWhen Limestone County District Attorney Kristi Valls said convicted cop killer Farron Barksdale would "die in an Alabama prison," she didn't know how soon his death would come. Barksdale died Monday at a Montgomery hospital, more than a week after Kilby Correctional Facility guards found him unresponsive and alone on his prison bunk,

"Why do the cops or prison guards think they are above the law?"
"Why do they think it's okay for them to exert what boils down to vigilant justice on this man?"
"It irks me that cops feel that their loss is greater than ours."
So you have already tried and convicted the cops or prison guards before all the facts are known, before an autopsy report as to what actually killed him. Hell even before anyone has been charged!
What is your definition of a "vigilant" or do you just look in a mirror?

Apparently someone in the prison(either the guards or the prisoners) decided to add the death penalty to Mr. Barksdales sentence.
vig·i·lan·te
1.any person who takes the law into his or her own hands
2.done violently and summarily, without recourse to lawful procedures: vigilante justice.

Cops take care of their own. We saw similar atrocities in Iraq. When fellow soldiers were killed in a roadside bomb. Some soldiers took it out on the populace. It is a camraderie that's developed when you're in a unit that is closely knit. Something like a "mob mentality". All it takes is a few people extracting revenge and the whole thing can get of hand very quickly.

I hate that he ambushed and killed these cops, but if he was killed in retaliation, there needs to be some serious house-cleaning in that prison system. It irks me that cops feel that their loss is greater than ours. We love and mourn our loved ones just as deeply. We have to watch as the person who murdered our friends or family members get sentenced to terms we feel are too easy, but that's the way it goes. Why do they think it's okay for them to exert what boils down to vigilant justice on this man?
If you or I did that, we'd end up in jail ourselves.

Barksdale had paranoid schizophrenia, but psychiatrists found him competent to stand trial in the deaths of the two officers. He never denied shooting them.>>>>
Three victims. The two police officers, and the young man who suffered from a brain disease that science does little about, & society cares little about. How sad.

"Blakely said a nurse called again Aug. 11 and said it appeared he had been "severely beaten."
Initial reports of Barksdale's hospitalization indicated he had symptoms of heat-related problems complicated by an upper respiratory condition, but he also had unexplained marks on his pelvis, which Corrections Commissioner Richard Allen said doctors thought were four or five days old.
Limestone officials later said Barksdale had no bruises or marks when he left Athens to begin his sentence and prison records indicated he did not arrive with marks or bruises."

I'll wait for the results of the autopsy before offering an opinion. One would think that a nurse could correctly discern someone being severely beaten, but it is unlikely that she came to that conclusion by looking at Blakely's pelvis. Trauma to the head or torso would have been cited by the initial reports of Blakely's hospitalization, unless there is a cover-up.

"The Limestone County Sheriff's Department transported Barksdale to Kilby on Aug. 8. Sheriff Mike Blakely said a nurse called his medical staff later that day asking for Barksdale's medications because he was hearing voices and might have to be hospitalized."
The fact that a person suffering from his mental condition was denied his medication is another puzzling fact.

Was he denied them?
It is not unusual for patients with paranoid schizophrenia to not take their meds when they need them. It happens that when they work, they don't think they need them, and if they don't take them, they end up thinking they are mind control drugs (which they are, but self control, not external control). Then they don't take them.
It requires more treatment than the passive availability of the meds, unfortunately.

I can't say i am surprised, they are another group of people who think they are above the law.

If he plead guilty to killing cops, it's a pretty safe bet he wasn't done in by any of his fellow prisoners. He probably just beat himself to death like so many prisoners seem to do.

It is critical to find out who the perpetrators were. Convicts have their own sense of justice and there are certain crimes which even prison detainees do not tolerate. Oftentimes a child molester will be killed by other prisoners. Jeffrey Dahmer was murdered by others who were incarcerated. It would seem that cop killers would not fall into this category however. There would seem to be more likelihood that wardens and guards would avenge policemens' deaths. If so, then these vigilantes need to be punished themselves.

I believe in justice in this case. This man should see death for his crime. I think he was a coward for taking a deal. I respect everyones opinion in this matter and I believe prisons are homes for the insane. I do not believe they are for teaching people how to correct there behavior for when they are set free. Guards tell prisoners who is the child molester and who the killers are. There are no human rights in prison. When do you ever here of an inmate get justice inside prison. Things need to be corrected but who is willing to protect the guilty.

Why wasn't this schizo removed from society when he was diagnosed - the reasoning I've seen from the postings for his brutally murdering two people is he was sick.
Cudos for whoever took this jerk out of circulation - don't really care who did it, one less murderer who would have been out of prison in 10 or so years so he could murder someone else's child...because he's sick.
American prisons are not configured to rehab anyone. It's pure punishment and these people are hardened to a point to when they come back into society, with the new skills in murder, rape and general mayhem learned in the sick tanks of gaytown (prison) we are assured someone innocent will pay dearly before these sickos are returned to their boyfriends.
One less out of circulation is definately a good thing.

Because back in the 60's, it was decided that "main-streaming" mental health patients was the humane way to go, so the asylums were closed, and they were sent out on the street. Some of them were lucky enough to have family who could take care of them (like this guy), others end up homeless, or in jail for petty crimes.
It is better for ten sick people to have no care than for one mainly well person to have involuntary care.
So the system decided to let them loose, for their own good.
That is why the sick kid who shoot all thos3e people at VPI was out, and why this guy was out.

You missed my point completely: he was sick. He should have been getting some kind of treatment. What the hell was he doing loose, able to acquire a gun and murder two people?
This could/should have been prevented.
You're right about the people who beat him to death are no better than he was - maybe the people responsible for NOT taking him out of society until he was well enough to function and not murder us should be held accountable...but they get away every time.
It's the liberal way - he murdered two people, so everyone felt bad for him - cause he was sick...isn't anyone going to cry for the 'sick' people who beat him to death???

I agree. Those resp for turning this unfortunate out to live in the 'real world' should be punished also. However, the AMA protects it own when it comes to placing blame for the behaviour of mentally ill people. My mother was a 'bona fied' Paranoid Schizophrenic and I still remember the doctors telling us, the family, that she 'chose'( interesting catch 22; she was crazy because she chose to be crazy so therefore she was not crazy; it takes the shrinks off the hook in case of malpractice suits) to behave a certain way when it was obvious to any sane person that her 'choice(s)' defied reality and often placed people in jeopardy because she would definitely attack anyone she perceived as a threat and reality had little to do with her reasoning as to who was a threat.

okay, some of you in here are missing the point. the guy might have had death coming to him, but it's the manner in which it was brought about that is up for debate. our country is founded on laws and regulations that are supposed to show the world how "civilized" we are. but if we're not holding everyone to the same standards and allowing corruption free reign, then we really aren't any more civilized than our opponents in Iraq. we are not living in a country of democracy if our police are enforcing laws they do not keep themselves.

This man called those officers to his house, then opened fire on them from a window before they had a chance to get out of the car. When he was arrested, there was a front page picture of him SMILING!! Maybe some of you cop killing defenders should stop and think.....MAYBE GOD TOOK CARE OF IT!! Parrish, I hope neither you nor your family members ever have a run in with "a farron" because you would think it was ok. Get a life! Wait on an autopsy while you are getting one!

I hope none of your friends or family members ever get mysteriously "taken care of" by the people who are supposed to protect us. I am perfectly willing to wait until the autopsy results are in, but if it does turn out that law enforcement "took care" of him, they need to be prosecuted. If not, I will be leading the effort to make sure they are.
If they wanted him dead, they shouldn't have offered him a plea.

Ok I'm sorry but I had to join to say a few things on this case.
1.No matter what Farron did he was still a person, and as a person he had rights that were violated.
2.He was Paranoid Schizophrenic, which meant he litteraly thought "aliens" (the 2 unfortunate officers) were after him. The problem should have been handled by the mental health system long befor it got to this point, i.e. the system and the state of Alabama failed.
3.Farron was a good person befor he suffered from his mental illness, he did smoke weed, and very occasionally drank. Yet he was a great friend. I am sorry for the 2 officers and their families, yet I am also sorry for Farron and his mother.
As someone who was very good friends with Farrron for years and someone who has done time in Alabama's mental health and correctional facilities, I feel I know alot about this. I can say if this had happened in another state things would have been very different, and yes I do believe Farron was killed.

The FAMILY of the convicted failed too and shares responsibility. He had been violent with family member s too. Don't tell me they did not know that a "mentally ill" person has no business with a GUN, especially one with bullets that can penetrate a bullet proof vest! Does it take those types of bullets to kill an alien? He was found competent to stand trial.

Guess nobody has any comments when they are proven wrong. Barksdale's schizophrenia turned out to be a history of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction, and he was FOUND MENTALLY COMPETENT by the courts! The Barksdale family should not profit in any way from all these bogus lawsuits they want to file. This SANE DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICT killed two police officers in COLD BLOOD because he thought he would be glorified. Now his family wants to profit from the tragedy they share responsibility for. That makes me sick! I wish the state of Alabama would make the whole family leave. They have caused nothing but trouble. Barksdale was as sane as anyone. He obviously was just a spoiled brat who always got his way or threw a temper tantrum. I hope the whole Barksdale family rots in hell!
