Lieutenant Clay Hanna looks sick and white. Like his colleagues he does not seem to sleep. Hanna says he catches up by napping on a cot between operations in the command centre, amid the noise of radio. He is up at 6am and tries to go to sleep by 2am or 3am. But there are operations to go on and planning to be done.

rumsfeld bears most of the responsibility, with gates a distant second, except for cheney, of course. all the military people have known this for years, but they usually choose silence. honor often seems to trump honesty.

          Tired people make mistakes.

"Again, if the campaign is protracted, the resources of the State will not be equal to the strain.

Now, when your weapons are dulled, your ardor damped, your strength exhausted and your treasure spent, other chieftains will spring up to take advantage of your extremity. Then no man, however wise, will be able to avert the consequences that must ensue.

Thus, though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays.

There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare."

Which begs the question: How do I(we) support the troops?

Well, we could get them the hell outta there, or we could send enough troops to REALLY occupy Iraq, and do that, stop pretending that the Iraqis are going to form their own 'democracy'.

300,000 more troops ought to be enough, and 150,000 new troops to relive those that have already done multiple tours.

That means 500,000 new volunteers, or a draft.

Other recruiting techniques are being used, but it certainly feels drafty.
