John Edwards is precisely right about this issue. We have no need for a draft, and if we stopped pursuing failed military policies all over the world, we might find ourselves in a better position. The next President of the USA will have numerous fires to put out to protect the role of the US in the global community.

I come at it from a different perspective. I believe that we do either need a draft of a compulsory national service rule where one way to serve would be in the military. If all Americans families realized they might have a personal stake in sending their sons and daughters off to die, they would think twice before cheering and waving their fists for a war we have no real reason to fight.

Not only that, and not to sound like some crusty old fart, but I suspect one of the problems with the past couple generations--the ones whose parents pay for eight years of education at a place like Stanford, and then they go on living in their parents' garage with their girlfriend, unemployed, for the next five years, their main concern is hoping they'll get enough money for a new skateboard for their 30th birthday--is the fact that their parents baby them until they (the parents) are dead. Gone are the days of getting the hell out of the house--why bother when you can come and go as you please and your parents keep you in new cars, from the time you're 16 years old? Your plan is kind of a "forced responsibility," and instead of a generation of ******, could lead to a generation of responsible people who don't see throwing money at something (or dropping bombs on someone) to always be the solution.

This is why a draft would not be a good idea. There are a lot of kids or young adults who really do not have the shape or mentality to be in a war.
The people who go into the army or marines and other services are usually gung ho about being a part of that and they are usually in the right shape and have the right mind state to keep up with all the hard work and punishment they may get.
I don't think it is even right to put a person in who would not be efficient in combat because you would be losing a lot of innocent lives a lot easier.
