Maneuvering a laser-tipped boom designed for the job, astronauts closely inspected a gash to shuttle Endeavour's belly Sunday, providing 3-D images that NASA hopes will rule out the need for risky spacewalk repairs.

This morning on the way in, I heard that the gash on the shuttle was caused by a piece of insulating foam - again - coming off a brace and bouncing against the underside of the shuttle. This is something that is apparently almost EXPECTED as it has happened several times during the last few launches. What's that definition of insanity again now? Oh yes, "doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."

Apparently, NASA is insane. WHY haven't they FIXED this? Is it really THAT hard to keep a piece of foam in place? IF so, why don't they replace the FOAM with something else that WILL stay in place? My guess: Some knucklehead engineer specified FOAM, then quit the project, and they can't find anyone with either A) The authority or B) the imagination to CHANGE the specs. Yet another illustration of just how freaking STUPID a large organization can get.

Dunno....I'm a big supporter of the space program. BUT, it seems to me that the shuttle program is passed its prime.....maybe its time to scrap it and hit the drawing board.

If my memory serves me correctly... This seems to be the same problem that cost several lives previously. NASA is worried about an apparently "risky" repair in space -vs- (in my eyes) another probable chance of certain death for more astronauts... How NASA can even look at the risk factors chancing re-entry without repairs, is beyond me. Get them back at any cost! They risked their lives to get there for their country. Get them back safe and sound. Even a 1% chance of failure is too much a price to pay.

Who ever decided to stick with falling foam problem must have had their mind out in orbit.
