Renewable Energy: a Better Bribe »
Posted by: universal12 1 year agoBribing and Pressuring Fissile Regimes On July 25th, France offered to build a nuclear reactor for Libya to power a water desalinization plant. Russia is delaying the delivery of nuclear fuel for Iran's nearly completed Bushehr to help pressure them to comply with UN Security council demands for less secrecy.

A brilliant analysis by the author.
In basic terms, it spells out the advantages these nations would have turning to solar or wind. However, our Nuclear Lobby, while not all-powerful, is driving the energy diplomacy agenda in these cases.
it's all fun and games until Chernobyl 2.0

I have no problem with nuclear fuel being used to turn on a light switch, but its not renewable. Advances in solar such as that found at ... http://www.emcore.com/product/ter_solar.php provides lots of renewable energy.

Solar and hydrogen are the future. Dr. Jerry Woodall has developed a promising process using aluminum as a catalyst to separate hydrogen from water:

You CANNOT separate the hydrogen form the oxygen in a water molecule without putting in energy. Then combining them again releases the energy. There is a net loss of usable energy due to inefficiencies in the process. If you say, "but, the ALUMINUM does that." Ask yourself - where do you get the aluminum? Making aluminum takes a LOT of energy. And you will notice from the article that the Aluminum in the pellets is NOT a catalyst - it is consumed (OK ... oxydized)in the process. This is NOT free energy - it is merely a method for transporting energy from one place/form to another. Just like gasoline is. You will also notice the article mentions the necessity of having a nuclear power plant or the like to recycle the aluminum oxide. This technology would doubtless be USEFUL - but it's not exactly what you would call "renewable."

I agree with AntiNeoCon. What about the waste. Big question. Eventually even Africa will wake up to the problem they are allowing to get dumped on them, for a fee of course, but still.

I agree lol, outerspace is infinitely large so I don't think some waste would hurt anything. It would probably just get sucked into a black hole anyway.

Nice pitch, but once again - the COST was neglected. Sure solar panels are nice. I'd put them up on my house today .... if someone else would PAY for them. It's fun to talk about solar energy as a solution to all of our problems, but SO FAR it is not affordable. IF the manufacturing process were to be greatly ramped up - to take advantage of the newer, more efficient designs - and quantities of solar panels were to become AVAILABLE in sufficient quantity to meet the ever growing needs of the world population... GREAT! Let's go. I just don't see that happening for a while yet. Big Oil still has many billions to pump out of the ground. Dollars AND oil. In the meantime, we need to produce more energy any way we can reasonably do so. As this article points out - you need energy for desalinization. Water, as we know, is CRITICAL. If a country - ANY country - has sufficient energy, it is MUCH less likely to become a problem to the rest of the world.

I agree with you joeblowe, of course cost is always a big factor with everything. So, we have to choose the most efficient process which will give us energy and use that to a higher capacity.
Right now though I am seeing a big movement with the energy sources and how to better our planet. Finally it is seeming to be a productive movement because people realize that things need to be done in order to make healthy changes. There is green talk everywhere.
