"University of Utah seismograph stations recorded a seismic waves of 3.9 magnitude early Monday, causing speculation that a minor earthquake had caused the cave-in. Scientists later realized the collapse at the Genwal mine had caused the disturbance."
"There is no evidence that the earthquake triggered the mine collapse," said Walter Arabasz, director of the seismography stations."

Wow. I was amazed this morning when I heard the report of the 4.0 earthquake on the news this morning. This is even more amazing. Best of luck to the miners and their families.

Mistaken for an earthquake? That's not very promising. Assuming they are alive they are probably buried under several megatons of rock.

There have been claims that the Mine was using "retreat mining" which they claim they were not.
I didn't know what retreat mining was, so I looked it up.
From : http://www.umwa.org/mining/ugmine.shtml
"When mining advances to the end of a panel or the property line, retreat mining begins. In retreat mining, the workers mine as much coal as possible from the remaining pillars until the roof falls in. When retreat mining is completed, the mined area is abandoned."

THey actually accnowledged, a version of it, they don't admit to mining to the last second, but they did acknowledge controlled back-out colapsing of old tunnels - a not uncommon (therfore common) practice and actually, if compleeted makes the mine safer.
There is a chance by the information re the 3.9 shockwave that an old tunnel was not completely colapsed and colapsed on its own, at an unfortunate unexpected moment and caused a cave-in at another section. Normally at controlled colaps shifts, the rest is vacant.
Is's a rough job, hope for the best
