Recovery workers were to begin searching at dawn Thursday for victims missing in a massive bridge collapse in Minneapolis, Minnesota, that killed at least seven people and sent dozens of vehicles plunging into the Mississippi River. At least 62 people were injured in the Wednesday evening rush-hour disaster, which was recorded by a nearby security

Boston's Big Dig first comes to mind. Here in the Denver area a family of three were killed instantly when a bridge girder fell and sheared the top off their SUV. A building's partially completed cement floors collapse killing a couple of workers. The list goes on. Are we allowing building practices and materials to be compromised in order to save a few dollars and a few days. Are our building and construction supervisors, officials and managers qualified and trained adequately to be able to prevent the preventable. Accidents will happen but as of late is seems far too many are occurring to let statistics or fate or whatever be given the blame.
Our infrastructure is aging and is requiring more and more care. I'm not sure the government knows what do to other than ignore the problem(s) and hope it goes away.
May God care for the people of Minneapolis; those families who lost their loved ones and the community at large.

The Startribune reported this morning that the Department of Transportation knew about the seriousness of the bridge and knew about the severity of the fatigue cracks in the structure and even talked about using steel plates to hopefully strengthen the bridge BUT CHOSE TO DO NOTHING! Tim Pawlenty should take some testosterone to deepen his feminine voice.

"On The Colapse of the Bridge Accross the Mississippi."
The falling appart of this bridge probably could not be predicted down to the day, but there is no general funding for auditing, repair and replacement of the largest part of the US roads, bridges and other public works projects. There are rail road bridges that are 100 Years old. President Bush has done more to put us in peril by avoding looking at this part of the USA, than any thing that the terrorists could have ever done to us. President Bush has done a lot to help the terrorists out by being a politician not a statesman.

HAHAHAHAHA!! Do you know how STUPID your post sounds?!?
HAHAHAHA!! Honestly, people, where DO you draw your correlations from? Your ASS?!?
This bridge fell, and I think it clunked you on the head and knocked out any last vestment of reasoning from your Lib-addled brain. This is what happens when the media is so far slanted to the Left. Morons like James Thornton here, trying to draw some correlation between an accident and an administration!
That kind of crackpot story sells newspapers and magazines, but in the real world, it's JUST AN ACCIDENT.
"President Bush has done a lot to help the terrorists out by being a politician not a statesman"
HAHAHA!! I thought terrorism wasn't a big issue with you Libs. Now it is, because it's convenient?!? Make up your mind!
Oh that's right. You've lost yours.

Think about it.
There are more terrorists now than in
2001, just by the fact that 1,400 EID's have been set off, each by a terrorist.
There have NEVER been that many acts of terror in the 20 previous years combined..
How much of that money used to occupy another country that does NOT want us there (except for a few thousand people)
could have been spent on OUR country?
What did he do to improve mining disasters?
(lower the regulations).
improve dring water toxins?
(lower the standards)
help prevent pollution?
(lower the regulations)
help unemployment?
(change the definition)
Improve education?
(put it all on the local school districts)
Fix New Orleans?
(blame the Mayor..for EVERYTHING)
lessen hunger in America?
(redefine it as "nutritionally challenged")
What has he done??
Oh yeah, he's united us!
(we have NEVER been more divided)
READ ON!!:: BEST YET..To protect our borders??
(redefine amnesty) NOT built one link of a fence.
But he did arrest 2 border guards!

Errrr James, that bridge was built in 1964 under the Johnson administration. If you didn't know, there have been adminsitrations from both parties since that time, how bout you be a little more 'balanced' in you anger.
From what I've heard, that bridge has been inspected recently, that is part of the reason that there was construction activities being done. The left's zeal to blame Bush for anything and everything that happens is quite funny and a little more than a bit disturbing.

No, I look to be the first poster to blame Bush for anything good, bad, indifferent, just to be first. I do it to be sarcastic or ironic or strange. The trouble is no one notices.
It amazes me how Bush can be so smart and dumb and ignorant and wise and oppositte at the same time. As far as the multiple government reports that eventually come out about the unexpected collapse of this bridge I'll bet that some intellectually challenged person with a super 18 digital camcorder deluxe will blame it on aliens, or the massad or the french under ground instead of the thirteen stripe ground squirells we all know right now that did it. See you

I'm not going to give away my political affiliation because truly, it doesn't matter. Like some of the other responders said, the bridge collapse has nothing to do with Bush. No, he's not perfect, but neither is anyone else on here and neither will be the future Presidents of the US. I think it's a shame that people take a tragic event such as this and try to turn it into a political tirade or anything else that it wasn't. Maybe instead of trying to point fingers, you should remember those who were hurt or killed and hope that it never happens to you or anyone else you know.

Unlike the war in Iraq, it will take more than hope.
It will take action!!
(I'm guessing that you're a Republican)
We have taken away the money to repair the levees in New Orleans in 2003, and we have no budget for infrastructure in this country.
It will only get worse.
Our government is doing NOTHING about the price of gas, the
failing schools, deteriorating roads or foreigners entering our nation illegally.
(all of whom, of course, are coming here to work)
When we're done praying for those we've lost can we get
back to the real world and do something to prevent more deaths??
Or is that too much work?
(praying is easy)

With money being tighter and politicians scrambling to save a buck, what did you expect from our leaders. Bush has/is squandering billions overseas in wars and outright foreign policy bribery. New Orleans and numerous disasters are not being noticed while Bush follows his agenda of lunacy.
I and many have been saying you cannot be the worlds policeman while squandering our resources to promote our agenda. Our infrastructure is suffering and this bridge collapse is but one disaster that will occur without the necessity of a terrorist. Bush is not a leader for America, hell he could not even run a 7/11 convenience store as he has shown he could not handle the 9/11 event.

It's not Bush's fault the bridge collapsed. The anger is going to be about the response. Money is tight because it is being squandered in Iraq. The war doesn't leave much for infrastructure at home. That's the point being made. Let's not forget about Congress' wasteful expenditures known as earmarks. If you are a Republican and a fiscal conservative you, more than others, should be outraged by what is happening since Bush became President - assuming of course you care about the country as a whole.
And I didn't blame Republicans either. I blamed Congress. I didn't blame Bush. I just point out that these things happened on his watch with the acquiescence of Congress (they were too busy lining their own pockets to care about the country).

what does bush have to do with these accidents? Katrina-hello? it was a hurricane, not some plot by the gov. What about the mayor of new orleans, the governor and the rest of the representatives that they have? why blame bush when they did NOTHING! what does bush have to do with the bridge collapse? NOTHING! their DOT has to make ammends and fix this. their local gov are at fault (if any can be made. listen to the news conference made this morning.) dont blame bush for every problem in the world.

Ooh,ooh, I know. According to that guy taking Rushs' place today it's the Dems fault. After all, he admits, the infrastructure is in bad shape. Why are we wasting our time getting all worked up over how the Republicans won't let a snowman ask them question? And MORE SO, wasting time going after Gonzales?
Never mind that after 6 years of total control the Republicans didn't give up any money for infrastructure. After all according to the Holy Raygun, "...Government IS the problem." Never mind that in Alaska they built a perfectly good bridge to nowhere. Then withhold money from an evil Democrat area like Minneapolis/St. Paul.
They're not real people and probably going to hell anyway.
People need to realize that it takes money to run a country and offer services. All this crying and whining about taxes is ridiculous. Where is the money supposed to come from to do all the building? Soon we'll be driving down dirt roads and everyone will be wondering what happened.

You can't be serious to once again accept no responsibility.
After all, his budget was so generous to infrastructure.
My question to you:
One more time, two more?
How many more bridges, levees, coal mines must collapse
before you ask him to concern himself more with rebuilding THIS country??
Last I counted, he wasn't on the ballot in Baghdad!
(I heard they're building some nice bridges THERE)

Ageing infrastructure is a problem nation-wide. Remember the steam pipe that blew up in NYC recently. Locally we have burst water mains routinely. Lots of deferred maintainence out there.

Aging infrastructure has been a problem for decades, but has been exacerbated by reduced spending and decreased taxes since the REagan era. Large Corporations contribute to the increased traffic on our freeways, yet pay the lowest percentage of taxes from profits to build, repair or maintain these aging roads and structures. So what is left is increased property taxes from all of us individuals, who after not receiving a raise in 5 years, or after having our well paid jobs go to India, are now left to carry the burden, and none too soon.

markmoron,
If you haven't received a raise in 5 years, perhaps you should examine your work performance.
Just like a Liberal crybaby - blame everyone else for their own personal failures. "Wahhh....my job's been outsourced to India! Wahhhhh!!!" Shouldn't that make you happy? You Libs are always wanting to save the world and guarantee equality to everyone - - why can't Indians have jobs?
Meanwhile, I'M doing well. Great job, well-paid, my stocks are all up, and I'm saving tons of money in gas by taking public transportation every day. Wheeeee!!!! And thanks to Reagan's tax cuts in the '80s, I saved MY money and invested well, and am reaping the benefits.
By the way, what are YOU doing to alleviate our dependency on oil and clean the air? Nothing? Thought so. Libs talk and talk and talk, whine and gripe and complain, get angry, get indignant and get bitter, but when it comes to actually doing what they preach......(crickets)
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Sadly, I am watching Pawlenty on TV and he is despicable since he trying to deflect the blame by saying that the transportation board did not tell him that the bridge needed to be replaced immediately even though the board told him that the bridge was deficient. He is more concerned about his political future rather than the welfare of the people.

Wow, almost verbatim what any mayor or governor would say. Blame the engineers, who have been warned not to give bad news or it will stain the image.
Where I live, the warnings have been strong and presistent, and now the work is being done this summer on major repairs to Bridges ans such. One 6.5 Earthquake could kill transportation around this city for years, and that means businesses would suffer. When Clinton provided infrastructure funding to all city back in the 90's my city went right to work adding Earthquake proofing to every single bridge to prevent the collapse. This was tested in 1999 with a real 7.5 quake, and everything held!
Amazing what preventative spending can accomplish over time. It is actually cheaper to make the fixes now than to rebuild everything later. Unfortunately New Orleans found out the hard way.

I do not see where there was a 7.5 quake in the US in 1999..a 7.2 in Calif if you lived in the hector mine, if so, are there lots of bridges and overpasses there? LOL..or the 7.0 in '99 on Kodiak Island in AK

On a bridge inspection report a deficiency could be anything from rust to something that will cause a failure. Just because it had deficiencies, that alone doesn't mean there will be catastrophic results from them. The extreme weather of that part of the nation, from extreme cold to extreme heat may have been the major reason for this failure. Every bridge has a lifespan and from what I hear they were to replace this bridge by 2020. Oh one more thing, if there are bridges that are 100 years old that hasn't been replaced, those of you only going back just 6 years in your attempt to lay blame is a bit wrongheaded.

The government does not want to spend any preventive money on anything. Someone told me the government is like a wheel-the object is to make the wheel keep going around even if the spokes are missing.
I don't think their will be too much lawsuit money left to pay the victims.
It costs about $30,000 per person to be airlifted after an accident. I am sure a lot of hopeless and dead were flown-just to make money for the state and county. Shame.

Guess what?
GOVERNMENT CONSUMES
PRIVATE SECTOR PRODUCES
Remember that next time you shout out how "evil" and "greedy" corporations are. Corporations - who pay mondo taxes, employ millions and millions of people, keep the economy buoyant and produce products that YOU use every day.
And also keep that in mind the next time some DumDumDemocrat proposes a new tax hike to pay for some boneheaded, do-nothing welfare program. Or the next time do-nothing, lifelong government employee Teddy Kennedy is up for re-election for the 40th time, looking for re-election AND a raise.

Yeah ,they put the dead onto cruise ships so the could charge them for one of those "Grand Voyages" the ones that are 100 days long going all over, they wanted to be able to bill them for that as well, along with their "life flight" I mean death flight bill...but then again you must be right, coz you said "I am sure........" lol

I wonder who will cover the medical. When you are injured in an automobile in my state the insurance must pick up the tab.
A lot of people only have $5000 limited medical per person. I bet they will not pay since it was the bridges fault.
Maybe they can say they collided with a vehicle in midair and blame the other driver.
I wouldn't expect bush to open up the feds pockets any time soon-people will have to wait in line behind Iraq, free medical to the world, hurricane victims, veteran's hospitals, tsumini, etc. With ignored we are not in an inflationary period-just do not know if any funds are available.

It's sad that even a tragedy like this can't bring some people together. They are so consumed with hatred for President Bush that they have to throw in their little digs.
If they weren't so offensive to the human spirit of this country, they'd be pathetic.
My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, survivors, and their families.
