Netscape's Traffic Revealed: 10 Million Monthly Uniques

News – The Netscape.com domain received almost 12 million uniques in June. Although many tools label them "visitors," uniques technically count the distinct cookies received from or sent to visitors. Folks, that makes us number 77 TOTAL. Rock the 'Scape!

Be careful what you wish for. This forum might get to be like the comment area on woot.com during a woot-off. So many people, entering so many inane comments, so quickly -- it's nearly impossible to keep up just reading them, let alone getting anything useful out of the torrent of B.S.

So, then the question remains how do you choose the channels for the homepage of Netscape? Well, I think that has to be based on registrations. Things that people are most interested in are the things that they are most likely to vote and comment upon. So, if for some reason Art & Design is commented on heavily and people are registering for that purpose (a simple check-box in the registration area would do it) then that channel would move to the front and the much less heavily commented and registered on Religion would get knocked off.

They kind of have it set up this way now, but it is by channel not with several channels per page. Heck, you could even have it (now THIS would be cool) where the individual Netscape user (you have to register to make this work) could customize their own front page. That would cut down on some of the spam as well. I don't know, I'm just running off at the mouth with some ideas I've had.

That's actually a good idea. A lot of good stories never get seen because they are on some of the more unpopular channels. They have no chance of making it to the front page.

That's right. So, why not have either customizable content (really only 'watch' a few channels) or set it up the way it is now, but by channel not necessarily by article?

We have to welcome new registrants. We have to be nice at first and not blow them out of the water.

Plus, let's remember that those of us who have been on here and active for a year or more we know who we are, we know things about each other and so when the 'new kid' says something contrary to what 'everybody knows' then we blow them out of the water. Heck, I did it just the other day without stopping to realize what I was doing.

We've got to stop and remember that we were all newbies once too. Help the new kids out.

BTW, a more important number than unique visitors is page views; over 100 million! Congrats, James!

Now, everyone get back to submitting more articles for me to read. Go on. Shoo.

Another question and not just because I posted this. Why is this story not at the very top of the Netscape anchors recommend list? Further, why are they not touting it and crowing about it like some of the addicts? If this were my company and not just my favorite site I would be blowing this up everywhere and pumping this story for all it is worth (which I am anyway). Yet, we have only four (I think) Scouts that voted for this story with no comments and nothing from the Anchors. Why is that? Are they not as proud as we are?

I don't know, but we have to promote the 'Scape and not just live here.

Hey, thanks for the kind words and high-octane enthusiasm. It's much appreciated, as are your suggestions regarding the home page. The reason we're not putting this story in the Anchors Recommend box is that it would appear too glaringly self-promotional. But yes, we're delighted by the news.

Okay. No worries. I LOVE IT when we are glaringly self promotional. But, I understand if that isn't the way it works for you folks. I say we because I've been here a long time and I consider this my on-line home.

Thanks for the reply to my open question. It is appreciated.

By the way, I wasn't trying to call you guys out, I was mostly just curious.

JamesMarcus,. .Class! That's the difference.

You see, I'm all about shameless self promotion.

This is a great site, with wonderful contributors.

(and just enough negs to keep it lively). Thank you.

Possible? It is inevitable. As the Borg say, "Resistance to Netscape and it's kick a$$ members is futile."

I am proud to be a member of this distinguished community! We do have free-for-all once in a while (Hey, you gotta kick it up a notch every now and then!) Intellectually, it is very stimulating, and the gang here is out of this world!

Of course, like writing, cooking, lovemaking...It can always be improved with effort and experimentation!!

LOL!

I can say no more--nor less--than to say the N-scape has become a part of daily life, a part that provides an ever-available place for that great gift, self-expression.

A hug for all!

This is too much of good stuff!

There must be something wrong somewhere...

I got it!

The anchors need better avatars!

Also, can these anchors do something about those comments that get narrower and narrower until they look like the string of a thong? How about staggering them evenly, so that they all look about the same width?

And how about giving us some tools for emphasis - such as Italics, Bolds, Underlines,... and yes, some color, too? How about emoticons?

And while I am on the roll, let me mention something about the rating scale. I think you guys should add two more ratings:

"AWESOME" and "FAIR".

OK~! Now that I have played my role of a skeptic, let me go back to the cheerleading squad!

Great job, Netscape! Great job, bloggers, posters and commentors! This has to be the best place to share ideas and do something worthwhile!

I bet you most of my friends here would feel lost if we couldn't get on line here for a day!

Peace and Blessings!
