That's so awful and, worse, was most likely preventable. The article is a bit short on details (maybe more will follow) but why was the kid alone with the dog? Was it a family pet?
Thanks elll. Very sad story. Just like the 11 month-old in Tennessee that was killed by two Siberian Huskies this month.
Never leave kids unattended with dogs! >:(

yes puffin, it had just happened Sunday.....I'm sure we'll hear more. The local news had interviewed the neighbors and they had said how much of a good father he is, always was with his son etc etc. but they had also said that the dog was always barking aggressively at others and that they had just got the dog recently, after a neighbor didn't want him anymore.

"Everyday occurance."
Well, dogs bite.
"Someone is maimed or killed by a pit bull every day which pit bulls constitute the overwhelming majority of attacks"
Got any facts, links, or proof to back up that statement? I doubt it, 'cause you're W.R.O.N.G. Considering the most popular breed is Golden Retrievers, THEY constitute the overwhelming majority of bites.

Hey puffin...here are the stats that support your response

more children die at the hands of their parents than from dogs

"There are people behind the existence of these dogs and they should go to jail."
I am the caretaker of one "of these dogs". I do my best to raise him responsibly, and present him in the best possible light to strangers, family, and friends. I take great care in avoiding possibly bad situations with him. He's NEVER off leash outside of our yard, he wears a seatbelt when he goes for car rides (I bring his leash as well, just in case car breaks down or pulled over, for example), he is constantly being trained - the training never stops, and absolutely would I never leave a kid alone with him unattended.
Should I go to jail?

jdhatl, I can only think you mean that it is people who are so irresponsible with their dogs that should go to jail.

jdhati;
Gotta agree with ya...we used to raise German Shepherds, I saw 2 dogs from the same litter, one raised by a family; the other by a guard service; the family dog was friendly, and wasn't dangerous unless his family was threatened, the guard dog was vicious.
My wifes cousin has a pit bull that is only dangerous to pizza...was very careful how she took the pizza away from me,
very gentle...according to her owner only went off on an attacker in their home,AND STOPPED WHEN THE COPS Arrived!!!
I've seen Dobies,Bull Mastiffs, and other "Mean" breeds, when properly raised and trained, to be gentle, family dogs.
NOTE: I have never known a Great Dane to return a frisbee.

No question raising and surroundings make a huge difference, pit bulls are not naturally violent, just extreemly dangerous when they are.
Again, just like many thing people fear what they don't understan and condem what they fear (pi bulls, muslims, motorcycles)
My parents trained dogs, and I was bitten by our own dog ( he wanted to break up a fight, but on a short leach the only thing he could get was my behind) nobody had to scold the dog, he let go imideatelly and was ashamed of himself

It's my understanding that dogs that are meant for hunting and killing see animals and humans smaller than them as prey.
Someone I know breeds deerhounds and the one time I was at their house they said "make sure the kids don't run when the dogs are around because they'll chase them down and kill them"

Thanks elll, more info indeed.
The dog was chained !!!! Chained up in the yard. I got serious issues people chaining their friggin' dogs up and the wondering why the heck they got problems with them!@!!
ROARRRRRR!!!!! I'm mad elll, sorry.
Before the guy EVER agreed to take the dog, he should have secured his yard with a good fence, if he could or didn't have one, then say no. That's the first thing. Not chaining up in the yard! Secondly, get the dog and the WHOLE family involved in training right away. Dogs absolutely must know that kids are to be listened to and obeyed as well. For the father to be letting his kid "feed" the dog unsupervised, is maddening. It may have had food aggression issues to begin with, and I'm betting that it was way under-socialized. Terriers, in general, have quite a high excitability level and match that up with the strength of these dogs ... training, training, TRAINING!!@!! Constantly training.

Hobe, supervision is one serious part of the problem. However, training is the MOST important part of caring for a dog. You know, people generally don't give dogs what they need, in the order that they need it, so they get dogs with ALL kinda of issues. My goodness! It's common sense!! People say you gotta teach your kids, right? Well, you gotta teach dogs too, or they just act out. It's like reinforcing negative behaviours, when really what we wanna be doing is reinforcing POSITIVE behaviours.
Chaining a dog up for the majority of the day? Well. See how aggressive you would be after.
1. Discipline - that means TRAINING.
2. Exercise - that's straight forward. Either in the form of play or a really good long walk.
3. Love & Attention -I hope I don't have to explain what that means, to anyone.
A good dog is a tired dog. Yes, absolutely this could have been prevented.

that doesnt make a dog good. i used to have an australian sheppard that we left inside i played with it all the time as well as my siblings, it was never abused. it was very smart and properly trained yet, ever since it was a puppy it attacked everyone that didnt live in our house. it eventually had to be moved to florida, im in ohio, so it didnt get put to sleep. i just think that dogs are like humans, some are born with aggressive (maybe 'criminal' is the word for humans) behaviors and theres nothing that can change that, they are wild animals when it comes down to it and you can never know when or what will set them off.
i also had an alaskan husky again, properly treated and trained. never been abused in its life. one day i was playing with it and i looked it straight in the eye and it bit me in the face. FYI... never look a dog in the eye.

Pit Bulls should be eliminated from this planet - many pit bulls wll turn on their owners also - for no apparent reason.

Though I am saddened and I love dogs, it still makes me wonder:
If Michael Vick would have been alowed to fight this dog, it wouldn't have bitten the youngster - sick ain't I

I have owned animals that were, on occasion, rather nasty-assed. But none of my cool pals ever attacked without first being provoked. Had they, I would have killed them for such a deed.
Attack dogs are only vicious when trained to be. It's not the animal's fault; rather, it can always be traced directly to the owner.
Put any animal on a 24" leader-line 24/7, 365-days a year, and you too can create a killer. Lousy owners have given those creatures a very bad name.
They are animals that man created for the singular purpose of killing other dogs. Frankly, they should shot in their greedy asses.
