An underground steam pipe explosion tore through a Manhattan street near Grand Central Terminal on Wednesday, swallowing a tow truck and killing one person as hundreds of others ran for cover amid a towering geyser of steam and flying rubble. New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said the explosion was not terrorism.

Yes, we have to make GW admit he made this happen, just like 911 right...you must be a comedian because that is just funny how someone could blame GW on this one...what will it take to make you guys realize that GW isnt to blame with everything that happens in your lives. But since you wanna drive that way. I bet the senator had something to do with it, she keeps burning her tires on the war so why not NY

There's actually something to be learned in this. According to recent news reports, the one fatality was from cardiac arrest, not the results of the blast itself. While my sympathy goes out to this person and their family and loved ones, we need to get a grip. I sure don't want it on my obituary that I passed into the hereafter because I was scared to death.

When I hear of a freak accident like this that takes a life, I am reminded of how when it is our time to go, that's it. We could be standing on a street corner and steam pipe could blow up.

We are all appointed a time to die. We do not live one day more or one day less.

                Debra...

I remember about five or so years ago, a woman in a remote Northern California town was killed when a U2 spyplane crashed in the unemployment office parking lot while she was walking to her car. Now who would ever expect to check out like that? You're right, when your time's up, your time's up.

Bush is reporting this as a "possible" Terrorist attack against our nation, our freedom, our liberties, & our justice system.

Con Edison uses the excess steam from it's generators to heat & power many NYC buildings this reuse of energy has been done for 100 years.

But now it can be used as an excuse for Bush Cheney & co. to attack Venezuela, because it is obvious that if Chavez gives back the oil production to American Cos. the oil could be used instead of the steam & we can all walk the streets safer

I've been waiting for the libs to find a way to blame this on Bush. So far, he blew up the world trade centers, created Katrina and then didn't help the poor folk, somehow caused the killer tornados, created the floods in TX, and lets just wait to see what else do they want to blame on him?? ..lol..

You said it, we didn't. But surely you exagerate. Even Bush couldn't have caused Katrina.

Another proof if so needed that New York is a backward city that only has a lot of makeup that makes it look modern but if you scratch on the surface you will see that it is an old rotting hag

How can you say that having had a cogeneration system in place is "backward". More like 100 years ahead of most other cities in the U.S. One death per 100 years of service is quite a bit better than most more modern inventions such as highways.

Shut your heavily made-up face Tesla.

Old pipes does not equal a "backward city". New York may need a lot of upkeep but the fact that a pipe which has been functioning in one of the busiest cities in the world since 1924 exploded in 2007 is a testament to how strong our so called "old rotting hag" of a city is.

So, what happened to the guy in the tow truck. Anyone heard anyone mention him or what happened to him, or how he got out of the truck? I have listened to several news reports, and read several articles, and the picture was featured in a photo slide show of the event, and no comment in any of it about the driver. wasn't that one of the most visible images of the event, and not one word was mentioned anywhere about him.

Why is the administration sending troops to Iraq when it could be protecting us from steam pipe explosions? OMG, the neocons have led us astray again!!!

actually, what fox, cnn & msn all said was that there was some asbestos in the dust and debris, but none in the air.

One exposure to some asbestos dust can't really be all that bad anyway -- if it were, there would be no old mechanics-- who used to regularly sand and blow out the asbestos brake linings on cars -- such as my 92 year old father-in-law did for over 40 years.

This steam pipe was put in place in 1924, according to the news.

America's infrastructure is decaying and has been for a some time! There have been several sinkhole under sections of streets, both in Dallas and in Fort Worth, Tx. over the years!

                                Thanks JM!

This is an unfortunate incident. The thing is there will probably be more and more as time goes on. There are so many pipelines and power lines and other utility lines that are reaching the end of their usefulness. They are simply deteriorating. In Pa.there are so many bridges. I think a majority of infrastructure in older towns and cities are going to need major repairs fairly soon.

Well it was a city pipeline. Sure the federal government gives NYC some money for that type of stuff, but from a financial standpoint, this is a city and state of New York matter.
