An underground steam pipe explosion tore through a Manhattan street near Grand Central Terminal on Wednesday, swallowing a tow truck and killing one person as hundreds of others ran for cover amid a towering geyser of steam and flying rubble. New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said the explosion was not terrorism.

    Checked it out, and the person who died, died of cardiac arrest. The coroner said it COULD have been caused by the shock of the steam pipe rupturing.
    So as usual, you're full of it, "engineer". No one "got killed".

There's actually something to be learned in this. According to recent news reports, the one fatality was from cardiac arrest, not the results of the blast itself. While my sympathy goes out to this person and their family and loved ones, we need to get a grip. I sure don't want it on my obituary that I passed into the hereafter because I was scared to death.

        Nice absolute speach above...so what percents would you put on "AQ is not a threat." Anyone that uses the absolute idea uses some sort of percent "Type" way of making themselves "Midstream." Why cant you say what you really think....which would be somewhere along, "I really dont think AQ is a threat" ,or "AQ isnt a thread at this time, in my opinion." That way you dont ever say an absolute so you cant be pinned down so you can spin your butt wherever you want it to go!

        The failures of local and state government in New Orleans and Louisiana, not to mention the failure of the citizens of New Orleans to remove themselves from the path of a well-documented killer hurricane, claimed a thousand lives and a few hundred billion in property damage.
        The Army Corps of Engineers planned to overhaul and fix the levees as far back as the 1960's, knowing full well that they would not withstand the flooding brought about by a major hurricane. What stopped them? Liberal environmental activists and sheister local politicians, who drove the Army Corps of Engineers out of town and shut down the project, claiming it would harm local wildlife or water fowl or some such nonsense.
        So nothing gets done, hurricane comes, sheister politicians do nothing to evacuate people, citizens ignore blaring reports from CNN and the Weather Channel, city is destroyed, and somehow it becomes Bush's fault.

        I have seen what I would look at small state hiway projects take years. The funds may have been reduced but what about prior to the war? Shouldnt something happen before it breaks though many other presidents on both sides have just forgetten to take care of what really matters to all of us. Our lives and our livelyhood is what really matters! I think thats is your point? If that is what it is, we have many ppl to blame on what happend in NO. Im not trying to defend GW as much as point that the problem has gone on for many years from dems to cons...back and forth. All they want to do is make money. They think they need to make money. They need to start serving all of us. If you want to blame someone then JFK would work bc he didnt start the project but he did NASA! Which one is truely more important for the real man?     So, you are arguing that failing infrastructure is not a problem? Your statement is absolutely specious.
    The fact is that we are diverting resources to a needless occupation that is in process due to the lies of the current White House resident. Also, resources were diverted to other things during the normal course of city operation.
    This is NOT about whether a failed infrastructure element is directly equivalent to a terrorist attack but about our priorities. As it stands, it is evident that our priorities are centered around maintaining the legitimacy of a failed administration over maintaining our infrastructure for the public good or even developing a functioning paradigm to truly provide security in today's world.

        AQ is the threat now- a deteriorating infrastructure is now and will continue to be a threat because it is being ignored, unlike AQ. Thus, when looking to the future, the deteriorating infrastructure poses a greater threat to Americans as roadways, dams, bridges or other structures give out to deterioration. In this particular circumstance, only one person died, that's amazing. These situations have the ability to kill hundreds, long after the threat of AQ is gone.

When I hear of a freak accident like this that takes a life, I am reminded of how when it is our time to go, that's it. We could be standing on a street corner and steam pipe could blow up.

Con Edison uses the excess steam from it's generators to heat & power many NYC buildings this reuse of energy has been done for 100 years.
But now it can be used as an excuse for Bush Cheney & co. to attack Venezuela, because it is obvious that if Chavez gives back the oil production to American Cos. the oil could be used instead of the steam & we can all walk the streets safer

        Again, I love how you guys like to pick and choose your news. Florida got hit with 4 major hurricanes that year, criss-crossing the state. Of course FEMA was prepared, ask how well it went for the first hurricane, Charlie on August 13th? I was there, I live in SW Florida. There was no help right away, that's the way it works with hurricanes. That's why we're told and expected to have 3 days worth of supplies. After that, the state and FEMA were more prepared. It also had a great deal to do with Jeb Bush, the best disaster governor, who made full preperations to have help available after the storm. Do you realize that more money was poured (wasted if you ask me) into New Orleans than in NY after 9/11? How much more help do you want to give these people who wont help themselves? If you read actual facts and see what really happened, you might change your mind a bit.

        I keep saying read the facts. Bush was in a helicopter with the Gov, asking is she needed help. She told him to wait till she got back to him to give assitance. It was 24 hours later before the Feds got the approval. The Federal govt can't just sent in troops, they need the request or the approval of the Gov. So, back to facts, it's not a lame excuse, it's the truth. That doesn't even touch on how when rescue teams went in to help, they were shot at by the very people they were there to help. Help was sitting outside the city waiting for it to be safe
        I also noticed how you just ignored the response to your Florida argument.
        The problem with people trying to make their point is they get too emotional with the story, stick to the facts of what happened and rather than jumping to some conclusion (usually attemting to blame everything on Bush) try and figure what could have caused the situation rather than having your reason ready and trying to make it "fit the cause".

        According to this, Blanco declared a state of emergency on August 26th to be in effect until September 25th:

        Apparently, about 24 hours later, she followed that up with a letter to Bush asking him to declare a major disaster for the state under the Staffard Act.
        Katrina made landfall on August 29th.

        Great research, but have you actually read that document? What it says is that Gov Blanco and the state of LA have the responsibility for the state. Keep in mind that the people of LA have 4 days notice of a Cat 5 hurricane and New Orleans center of the "cone of uncertainty". The LA (democrat) government left the people hanging. Most of these people chose to stay, the others that wanted to leave waited to the last minute, and realized the Government wasn't coming.
        Why do so many people put all responsibility on the Govt. The American way is personal responsibility, not government reliance. That's the problem with New Orleans.
        Evidence, how much do you hear from that town that just had 95% of the buildings destroyed by a tornado? You don't because they're not a town of welfare recipients. Two years after Katrina and we're still hearing them whine!
        Face it folks, this isn't Bush's fault, it's the welfare state mentality that killed those people!

So, what happened to the guy in the tow truck. Anyone heard anyone mention him or what happened to him, or how he got out of the truck? I have listened to several news reports, and read several articles, and the picture was featured in a photo slide show of the event, and no comment in any of it about the driver. wasn't that one of the most visible images of the event, and not one word was mentioned anywhere about him.

actually, what fox, cnn & msn all said was that there was some asbestos in the dust and debris, but none in the air.
One exposure to some asbestos dust can't really be all that bad anyway -- if it were, there would be no old mechanics-- who used to regularly sand and blow out the asbestos brake linings on cars -- such as my 92 year old father-in-law did for over 40 years.

This steam pipe was put in place in 1924, according to the news.
America's infrastructure is decaying and has been for a some time! There have been several sinkhole under sections of streets, both in Dallas and in Fort Worth, Tx. over the years!

This is an unfortunate incident. The thing is there will probably be more and more as time goes on. There are so many pipelines and power lines and other utility lines that are reaching the end of their usefulness. They are simply deteriorating. In Pa.there are so many bridges. I think a majority of infrastructure in older towns and cities are going to need major repairs fairly soon.

      Katrina was too big of a disaster to be handled completely by Louisiana and New Orleans. Basic maintanance of city steam pipes, and the aftermath of a minor disaster is not too big for New York. You could have a democrat in the WH, 435 dems in the house, 100 in the senate, and 9 in the supreme court. We might not be in Iraq, but this pipe would still have blown up (assuming we hadn't eliminated state and municipal governments). The whole "pin everything on bad Bush" argument is only valid when they are matters in to which the federal government delves.
