Britain did the right thing! Pakistan like other countries do not know toleration. That's the problem with the Middle East, escept for Israel who would rather live in peace. I f the fanatics put down their guns, there would be peace. I f the Israelis put down their guns, there would be a batch of dead Israelis!!

I agree with both of you, but The Satanic Verses created so much fuel for the fires of hatred, you have to ask the Queen, "What in the name of hell were you thinking?" Do we really need another spectacle of Islamics having conniption fits over a real or perceived insult to Islam? These people are for real in their anger and the West needs to carefully monitor and control their activities within the borders of western countries or better still, deport them.
Events such as knighting Rushdie will only draw more targets on the backs of innocent British citizens who will bear the brunt of a soft target attack by some Jihaddie idiot.

I've read 'The Satanic Verses' twice and still haven't identified anything in there, worth putting a million dollar bounty on the guy. If your god gets ticked off or offended by what people say about him, he should take care of it himself.
Either you believe in Freedom of Speech and you are willing to defend it at great expense, or you do not and therefore you do not deserve it. What Rushdie did was fine. He never said "kill someone" or "beat them up", he wrote a long and complicated novel about some interesting concepts, none of which are offensive in and of themselves. The only people making a fuss and a fatwah are the extremist, violent thugs of Islam and if you don't have a spine, then take out a loan and buy one for yourself. You'll probably need it someday.
Interestingly you guys think that the freedom of speech is the right of the west only. And that only the Muslim world should be tolerant. Amazingly it is the so called 1st world countries who jail people for denying Holocaust. I guess you can only excersise your freedom of speach against muslims and no one else is suppose to say a word. So in other words, keep insulting others and they better not say a word yet you insult or protest against what we, the west, do then we shall label you as extremists and warmongers. Freedom of Speech is a western ideal that was written into the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States and adopted by many democracies worldwide. Most Muslim countries do not embrace this ideal, however. Your lack of knowledge on the subject is only outweighed by your lack of proper grammar and spelling.

The only reason I disagree is the fact Salman Rushdie has made obscene claims about Islam, and he gets a knighthood from the British Establishment, Louis Farrakhan made one statement about Hitler and he is banned from traveling to most western countries starting with the UK. The balance does not seem fair to me!
Obscene claims? No he did not! He wrote a fictional book. The plot is twisted, long and boring beyond belief but he did not denounce Islam yet alone make obscene claims. (that being said it was a "Crital" hit.)

Some of us are self-taught students of history. We read dozens of books at the public library to get the whole picture.
For example:
* The first crusade was by the muslims against Jews and Christians/catholics.
* The second crusade was by the catholics in response to the first crusade of the muslims.
What is going on now is nothing more than the second crusade of the muslims against the west and you and I both know it.
It just depends on whether or not you're big enough of a man to admit it.
If the muslims were running America I would never have gotton that fabulous education in history because they would burn down all the public libraries here, just like they burned down the greatest library the world has ever known. The library at Alexandria Egypt. They burned it down because it had more than ONE book 'the qu'ran' in it.

I understand the three genders: male, female, and neuter; the five declensions: nomitive, accusative, datative, genitive and occasionally vocative; the four tenses: past, present, future, and aorist; and how shading and nuance of meaning affect speech.
So start the debate and expect unexpected answers. I won't just tell you WHAT I believe, but WHY (and it won't be "'cause that's what the preacher says").
Who knows, we might even be able to educate each other.

years ago when the fuss started, I found a copy in the library and read a little...I agree. Not only is it merely fiction, but allegorical in nature and I didn't care for what I read.

The OT never condoned polygomy (unles you have the LDS version). It recorded what happened, and when people made mistakes, it showed them, and the results.
