      I would like to interject here, in the light of where this discussion may be headed, that it would be respectful to pay some attention to Alan Johnston, who he was and what he represented. May I suggest that each and every one on this thread observe 2 minutes of silence & prayer or meditation for his speedy release?

      He is the ONLY Western reporter who has been present full-time in Palestine, living alone and simply and with great empathy for the plight of the Palestinians. He lived in full awareness of the risks that he was taking. The kidnapping was a perfect example of "shooting themselves in the foot" by his abductors - assuming that they are really who they appear to be and that this isn't some Mossad tricksterism..

    You might want to refine your strategy just a little and start out by killing just the terrorists (it will say ammunition). You might also want to try winning over the hearts and minds of those Muslims that are just as sick and tired of the BS the terrorist are pulling in the name of their religion. The good Muslims (the majority of them) could be a very valuable group of allies in this war.

      Have to question your "majority of Muslim" analogy. Being not a fan of any religious order I am not biased in the following; I have never heard the vast majority or even the slight majority speak out about terrorism or the need to kill their brethern. Maybe I missed these illusionary moderate Islamist you speak of but a few yes. Now with christianity, Jews or whatever, when a barbarity occurs you hear the denounciations loud and clear from those masses. What news are you watching? Must have missed those moderate Islamist within the Muslim world!!

      Most Muslims moderates, I think not and my view is realistic and not a mirage of wishful thinking.

        Really. When Israel was bombing the crap out of Lebanon and using chemical weapons etc the silence of rabbis in the USA was deafening. Likewise, the silence of the faithful christians regarding ALL of the wars the US has engaged in over the past 50 years is deafening.

        I base my opinion on first hand observation through my tours of duty in Turkey, Albania, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, the Philippians, Indonesia, and Kuwait. I also base my opinion on special courses I have attended on Middle Eastern/Muslim culture. Most of the Muslins I have come in contact with wanted pretty much the same things as everyone else in the world; a bowl of rice, a roof over their head, an education for their children, and to be left alone.

        There is a difference between Christian's reactions and their "denunciation" of barbarity (Northern Ireland during the 1960's and 70's being an exception) and how Muslims react to barbarities committed in the name of their religion. For the most part Christians do not need to fear that they will be stoned, beheaded, or have their hands cut off for speaking out against members of their own faith.

          I have no problem with killing terrorists or their supporters. I don't think it is wishful thinking to believe that the majority of Muslims throughout the world can be gained as allies or neutralized diplomatically as we metaphorically send the terrorists to hell.

          L-N, Your points are well taken and its good to hear from someone who has seriously had their feet on the ground and who has also preserved an open and objective mind.

          The only qualification that I would make to your analysis is that, while obviously the brutal punishments inflicted according to Muslim doctrine are repugnant to anyone with a human conscience, we in Western Culture, also need to be careful of our claims to occupying the higher ground.

          In historical terms the Crusades are not so far behind us; in the US lynching is hardly a historical memory. Most of the rest of the Western world, apart from the US, looks upon capital punishment as abhorrent. There are many regimes that we support in the world where we have "good business", particularly oil and other resources, where we turn a blind eye to the excesses of the regime. When did we last send formal complaints to China about the treatment of political dissent there?

            If Muslims' reason for not being better world citizens is always going to be, "well what about the Crusades? What about slavery?", then I fear we are in for a long wait for these people to advance in the direction we all want humanity to move toward. How about a little accountability already?

            The Crusades are over. Get over it! Christians made mistakes, baaad ones, but they don't allow their mistakes or misfortunes to hold them down in the mud, crying woe is me, for centuries. Quite frankly, they are holding the rest of the world back. Sorry.

      hearts and minds cannot be won over. I see my fellow muslim going out to kill a non-muslim and as long as it is not me or mine i will keep my mouth shut. These are the moderate muslims who may not agree with the terrorist's methods but their silence lends tacit approval. And they are all silent.

  Parading kidnapped and captured journalists, aid-workers and other non-combatants only show the world what kind of people these Islamic militants really are. Picking on the weak or undefended is the only recourse for cowards and bullies. This does not help their cause.

    It obviously does help their cause. In the eyes of the muslim world each and every effort to hold down the advance of the western world is defended through justifications created years if not centuries ago. The fundamentalist who kills the US soldier is highly thought of in the general population. THey may not physically support the insurgent but they provide tacit approval and assistance through their silence. When the true "moderate muslims " of this world finally stand up and say they will no longer support the terrorists and actually do something to stop terrorism then I will be able to rid myself of bias toward all muslim.

Guantonimo bay is a place where we essentially kidnap people we deam as terrorists and hold them for as long as we want. In some cases for barder, just like terrorists.           And just what do you propose to do with the terrorists that are captured on the battlefield. Should we torture and behead them as they do to ours? Maybe we could have them promise not to continue with their ways. I'm sure that would be fair to them. Get real. THis is a war. A war where the enemy does not play by the same rules as we do. And here you are suggesting that the US is the terrorist. THe only reason you can even state your opinion is because the US and western powers have said you had those rights. You use those rights to defend terrorist activities and to denounce anyone who interferes in the rights. given by god to kill your enemy and hischildren and family.             Just curious, where do you get your information from...is it your contention that everyone you capture and torture was captured on a battlefield somewhere? Do you insist on lying to defend your government policies or are you just one of the many in America who is uninformed and fed propaganda by your right wing media?

            By the way, your government has in the past and still continues to support terrorists around the world. This has been pointed out many times before so, seeing as how you are against terrorist supporting regimes, i can honestly say that you need to invade and occupy America and change out your regime as a warning to future governments.

  I understand that the average person has no idea how to fight, but why go somewhere where you can be kidnapped by terrorists if you can't defend yourself? After seeing how the majority of those captured have been be-headed or dismembered, why would you not at least try to fight back?

  I also think that the majority of Americans need to realize that the ones responsible for this kidnapping, and others, are the islamic terrorists. NOT America's!

  Good article and I do hope that the journalist has been treated well and will be released soon. Kidnappings like these only point to the fact that the world has to stop sending and selling bombs and munitions all over the place, and the countries have to start teaching peace and love instead. This need to be done in schools, community groups, in the news and in the houses of worship. We have to stop teaching that war is an acceptible tool to settle difference and tit for tat is the way to run the world. For a great book on peace, go to amazon dot com, LuLu dot com and look on ebay for a signed edition of "korana of mother goddess." this book only teaches peace and love and is most relevant today. we can elminate war, poverty, illiteracy and bring basic housing and medical care throughout the world, if we only try.

  I sincerely hope he is released unharmed, and also hope no journalist should be harmed in the future. They are not always impartial in reporting yet they deserve to be treated with kindness and respect, because they just have to do whatever their media bosses tell them to do. They are just making a living like anybody else.
