Voted. I'm a liberal and I can't STAND the idea of illegal immigration. It is a serious problem. My uncle, who is also a liberal, thinks that we just have to deal with it. Well, he's right, in that we have to deal with it, but he's wrong in that the way to deal with it is to legalize them.

I wouldn't put it that way. My grandparents came here LEGALLY, got jobs and learned English - all while preserving their own cultures and languages. I am here because they came here the right way - within the restrictions of the law. We are not "pulling up the ladder" for others to come here legally - just for those who have such disregard for our laws that they sneak into our country illegally, in the dark like thieves.
Just as toleration of corruption in politics, law enforcement and business leads to an overall disdain for law among citizens generally (and the young especially), allowing illegals to enter the country in violation of immigration laws will tend to make them further disrespectful of our laws generally.
Immigration laws should be fair and fairly enforced.

It's fair to say America is not in the position to handle this much immigration without suffering from a serious breach in national defense at this point.
Give me you tire your poor, just not all of them or America will become all tired and poor people working for the rich.

Great Idea here!
I too consider myself liberal but feel the UNCONTROLLED influx of illegal immigrants is harming everyone and especially those enticed to come and be exploited. Ours is a short sighted non policy. Perpetrated behind the curtain by those who would do anything to screw labor and hate the "New Deal" so badly they sabotage it.

I tried to present all views instead of just the ones I liked. The NY Times poll is incredibly selective about what they report in their blatant attempt to fool people into thinking there is support for this bill.
It will take a LOT of changes before this bill is acceptable!

One thing not mentioned as one of the problems with "guest workers" is anyone can be sent as a guest worker no passport no nothing, nice way to get people into the US that we may not want here.

I think we need to close ports and borders first. That should have been done immediately after 9/11. But do it NOW. Before even beginning to deal with the illegals here. Then, once the ports and borders are secure, start sorting. There are decent people who would make fine citizens. There are thugs and drug runners, throw 'em out. But everybody here illegally has to wait until all the people who have done it legally have been given their chance. And that means the ones on waiting lists who are out there trying to get here the right way.
And thanks for the poll. The one questions I would like to see asked: Should we do this with just one bill or should we close the borders first and then sort out the illegal aliens.

The idea that a single bill could somehow address this issue is simply absurd.

Absolutely, you can't save the sand castle until you make sure the ocean isn't gonna hit it.

I am for documented guest workers who are skilled and can add value to the nation in some way. I am also strong advocate of curbing immigration so that the current ones can indeed assimilate. Local law enforcement needs to do their part as well to get ahold of illegals, and enforce the laws. Employers should be fined , especially if they are aware that they have hired an illegal immigrant. This doesnt just pertain to latinos, but to ANY minority group.

A $5000 isn't large enough for employers. It has to be onerous. More like $100,00/illegal for the first offense. Second offense $500,000/illegal PLUS jail time.
If employer sanctions are stingent enough the illegals won't be hired. There will be no need to deport them because they won't come if there aren't jobs

This is the first thing I've seen on your Duly Consider site that hasn't made me completely crazy, transcender. Good job.
This is the comment I left:
I have little problem with immigration. I have HUGE problems with the dry foot policy we seem to have going on now. I know Europeans who have been waiting several years to immigrate, but if you sneak over the border, you're good to go? That's not right.
Everyone should play by the rules -- and they are not just undocumented they are ILLEGAL. As far as the fines are concerned, if they weren't worried about following the rules to get here in the first place, why on earth would anyone believe that they will follow the rules now and pay the fines?

I found it difficult to give even 1 star to 'Undocumented workers have a right to demand rights'
The poll is very good, and I think it may help some people to consider some of those questions that they might not have even thought about before.
And amazed-about paying the fines? yeah good luck in collecting, since they can't even get the illegals that are here now-out! where even would they get the $ to pay fines?

Good poll with 'to the point questions'. However, I seem to believe that our politician's will do what ever is good and profitable for them and not for the American people. Immigration from south of the border provides the 'corporate' types with plenty of labor at real cheap wages; this also has a trickle down effect into the rest of the labor mkt.. Just recently, while standing in line at the DMV in Lex Ky, I watched a local 'roofer' hire an underaged illegal alien to be part of a 'roofing team' that was working on one of the many houses going up in the area. The contractor was telling the young Latino that it was ok to be young and illegal and implied that the young man could basically 'hide within the paper work' of the company the contractor was working for. The two exchanged phone numbers and the contractor told the young man who to call to make arrangements to go to work the next day with no question's asked. Nuff said about the Illegal Immigration Bill.

Is a good poll. I have questions
1) $5000 fine for the illegal is correct.
2) $5000 fine for the one hiring illegals is fine.
3) A fine for the consummers of products manipulated by
the illegals is an Option not contemplated by the poll.
Perhaps $5000 fine each time we eat a tomato, drink orange juice or California wine, produced with participation of illegals will stop the train right on his tracks.
The country won't die of starvation, we could import food produced by American companies by legal means overseas.
The wall is the better more intelligent idea however. We should make it beautiful like the Great Wall of China.
It would double as tourist attraction.

The insult offered by our government about "jobs Americans won't do" should be rejected by anyone with a pulse. What is wrong with enforcing our current laws preventing employers from hiring illegals? Send a message by putting the lawbreaking employers in jail. Does anyone understand the importance of supporting our own economy? Is the act of hiring illegals somehow parallel to a business moving its headquarters overseas to avoid taxes? What is the state of our own economic patriotism? Can our politicians manage to think "outside the box" by offering tax incentives to business for maintaining their domestic presence in support of investment and job creation?

Excellent comment, robertmb! You are spot on. The corporatists, including Bush and the fatcats in Congress support worker immigration at the cost of most American citizens and illegals, who are merely being used as their pawns to keep our wages down. Yet we hear very little from the media about enforcing laws against illegal employers. The elites in Mexico and the U.S. are conning us, pure and simple.
