What a shame that he acted so violently against his fellow students...
I'll never understand what can drive a person to act with such disregard for human life.

Your comment, intentionally or otherwise, illustrates a fundamental flaw in the approach the United States takes to the rest of the world. We assume that everyone is just like us, thinks like us, shares our values, etc., etc. They generally do not. Man, left to his own devices, and without necessary socialization, tends toward depravity, and some people are just plain evil. The sooner we recognize this, the better we will be.

Surely you jest? Man left to his own devices tends to depravity? What planet did you come from? The United States history was based on violence and aggression. It has bombed more nations that any other nation on earth. Is the only nation to use nuclear weapons on cilivians. Is not engaged in an illegal war in Iraq that has killed it is estimated over half a million Iraqis and more than three thousand of its own have died. It has invade countless cultures with the aid of its European forebears and destroyed them: like Hawaii and Alaska and the Caribbean and Pacific Isles. In 1921, twenty five thousand whites bombed a black community in Tulsa into oblivion, killing an estimated fifteen hundred or more blacks and destroyed dozens of black owned businesses. Same in Rosewood Florida and many other towns over America. Until the 1970's over five thousand blacks were lynched for their race alone. Let's not be hypocrites.

If you ever been abused, blacklisted, and outcasted by your fellow students and no one would do anything to prevent it, you would understand what he was going through. It is easy to disregard human life if you are treated less than a human. And don't think it matters what we think, but it is in the mind of that person.

Two of his roommates were interviewed on CNN. They tried to include him, but he was withdrawn, they said. Rarely talked. The police were called twice by girls he was stalking. The second time they came, he threatened suicide and was sent to a mental health facility for observation. This young man should not have been allowed to purchase a gun, and he obviously needed mental health treatment, which he wasn't given. (If the testimony of those who knew him is correct.)

I wish people and the Media would stop getting the AZZ HOlE Syndrome and stop looking for any fault they can in the University.
How is it that people will actually say, "how did he get that gun, and how did he get it on campus"? Are you Fu*** Kidding me? Daaaaa, Virginia isn't laxed,, its a us citizens right to able to purchase a gun if they have a clean record. Unless we are Communist.
Anyone can hide a gun and go to about 80% of places around them. Thats no surprise. AAAA Geee Wizzz Mr Wizard.

I was watching the Chilean station last night where they interviewed one of the students. He rumored that the spree was in remembrance of the Tienanmen Square killings.
Thanks, buddy. Just the way we needed to remember--more killings.

Before the killer was identified, many sources reported him as a Chinese male. So, unless the Korean student felt strongly about Chinese issues, I'm pretty sure that's just a rumor.

If a person is Asian they automatically think Chinese or Japanese, so that could be what happened. Isn't it sad though that alot of the people that are committing these horrific deeds (remember 9/11) are people from other countries coming to ours to make some sort of statement. This is why people are becoming afraid of what they term as outsiders. I remember a time when you could leave your doors unlocked, have the kids play in the yard or ride bikes around, and go to school without the fear that you might have a bullet in you before lunch. What has happened to our country? We have civil rights, we have DSS for child abuse, schools now have metal detectors, we have all this stuff in place that is suppose to make our lives better, yet it's all getting worse. We need to do something to change the downward trend that this country has gotten into. As to those of you out there that say, this is just one incident, yes it is, but I truly doubt it will be the last.

You're right, it was rumored, but you know how long it takes for the truth to come out. We are still waiting on JFK....

There was another possible source of misinformation. Someone "found" a website/blog of a Chinese National who also happens to be a student at the school. Many of his entries spoke of a recent breakup, his heartaches and had several pics of his gun collection. After several hours and many many hits on his site the young man finally posted a disclaimer stating he wasn't the shooter.

Sources tell ABC News that Cho killed two people in a dorm room, returned to his own dorm room where he re-armed and left a "disturbing note" before entering a classroom building on the other side of campus to continue his rampage.

I pray for the families and friends of the victims. I am curious, how does an alien buy a hand gun?

He bought the gun illegally most likely. The same way the gang bangers get them. If he could not have bought the gun, he would have most likely used a bomb or something else to do his deed. We must all understand all that is needed is the will, the knowledge and the opportunity. The only thing the outside world can control is the opportunity.

I feel that there could be a deep disturbance in
the way the gunman is thinking. The gunman has issues that
should have been delt with. The fact that he said nothing
suggests his actions were deep seated and angry. What could
compel a student to do a thing like this. Guns do not arbitrailary stroll the country side shooting things. The root cause is what must be addrssed. Removing guns is not a long term remedy. The time for "Quick Fix" is passed. There is something wrong with a society that fuels this kind of reaction. What is going on in the Education System, other than being disproportionally funded to its charted success, that could turn students minds so they are certain beyond all doubt that anger driven destruction is the only option left from their point of view

Your kidding right? "The fact that he said nothing
suggests his actions were deep seated and angry."
Restating the obvious like that you should apply to work for McKinsey and Company.
Do you honestly think someone would go on a killing spree because they were anything other than angry? Have you ever heard of a killer going on a killing spree because he was happy?

spiralthrough1 year, 5 months ago
A lot of past serial killers were psycho/sociopaths=modern psychology considers them to be completely emotionless. Dunno about spree killers though; it seems like they would have to be angry.

Happy? don't know that's a dicey word, but it is silly to say, in such a robust manner as you just did, that the only motivation for killers is anger.
Many killers are thrill-killers, pleasure seekers, and for many of the serial variety, the act of murder is tied to libido[think Ted Bundy]

This was a horrible tragedy, but to blame our society for failing the perpetrator of such a horrific atrocity is nonsense.
Our society gave him the opportunity to come to the U.S. and pursue his degree. The U.S. opened its arms to him. Whatever pained this man's soul should not be blamed on our free society.
"Society" cannot identify every single person with problems and issues. "Society" cannot make it all better. It can only provide opportunities for individuals and make available venues to seek what help they need.
To place the blame on our "society" or on our educational system is too nebulous and removes the accountability and personal responsibility of the perpetrator of heinous acts such as this.

That's an example of a functional aspect of our society-what people are blaming is the social, interpersonal aspect of society, and especially in regards to what this killer's societal environment consisted of.
Upbringing should also be taken into accout.
