Dohm, a married mother, made the threats from September 2005 to April 2006. The threats were in notes found in the boys' lockers, a Thurmont Middle School bathroom and envelopes mailed to two of the victims' homes.

Some of the notes began, "Tick Tock Tick Tock. Is it a bomb or is it a clock?"

Is it a nut case, or is it a butt face? Can this teacher plead insanity, or is she just guilty of being an incredibly passive aggressive menace to society?

Stoners, didn't you know that this is just a small sample of what is going on in "schools" now a days. Humm, they used to teach in my days.

I was reading this story in my local paper this morning. I work in Frederick MD. The District attorney Charlie Smith said that the motivation for the letters will be presented at the sentencing.

Hey Stoners... what is it with these teachers? a few years ago, one woman named Letourneau, a married woman of three kids, had sex with a 12 year old boy out in Cali, now we have a middle school "Unabomber" who's a terrible poet...what gives???

There are lots of excellent, underpaid teachers out there doing their best to educate our kids... I would be very careful because generalizing based on few stories like this one is inherently unfair (even though the story itself is amazing. Just keep submitting them, STONERS:-)

I don't know why current society has devalued the profession of teacher so much. Up until the second world war teachers used to be (together with doctors and as strange as it may sound, lawyers) one the most respected citizens in every town/village...

avatar

But they had more respect from the general public then, than they do now.

avatar

OR, if they don't like the pay, they can go where the REAL money is and where there is a REAL need - into Nursing. Teachers are still one of the most respected professions in my eyes, but if its all about money they're in the wrong line of work.

HEY! Letourneau? That deal was in the BRONX.

My mother used to say "Insanity is contageous: you get it from kids" Maybe there was more truth to that than she even knew.

avatar

There is a common beleif among our district that the teachers at each level of education tend to take on some behaviors or traits of the children they teach. Maybe that explains why Middle School Teachers play these stupid pranks and High School Teachers sleep with their students

Once again, teachers are put in a bad light. Our profession takes so much abuse from the bad apples. If there were a way to screen out some of them before they get in the classroom, I suppose we would. Then again, consider, no profession is free from nutjobs. One look at the Oval Office is all the proof I need.

Sorry if it seems like I was painting teachers with a wide brush... david_nwpa. I know those particular teachers in question are the exceptions not the general rule.

There are good and bad in every which way in this world.

david nwpa-just because they are a few bad ones out there doesnt mean they all are, sorry dude,no offence to you...

I think most people know that teachers are generally good, hard working people, David. I still have fond memories of some of my teachers, and my children's as well.

As an administrator in the public school system I must say teachers are the most dedicated and hardworking professionals I know. They regularly get to school early, stay until night, and come back on the weekends. Despite a lack of respect, increasing demands, and media scutiny, they roll up their sleeves and find a way to get the job done. I tip my hat to all those public teachers who work so hard and never get the credit they deserve. The public doesn't want to hear about all the wonderful things they do on a daily basis; they just want to hear about the one in a million freak show that infiltrates the public school system.

Thanks (BronxBomber) for retracting your statement; it's an ugly thing to say.

avatar
Reply

Obviously not everybody agreed with your retraction. I'm a teacher and I see that as most cliche's. It has a grain of truth in it, but, of course, it doesn't fit all. As a retired Army officer first I like to twist that a bit and say, "Those who can do, and then they teach."

With all of these things happening in the schools in recent memory,

it makes a movie like the "Blackboard Jungle" seem tame.

Hey Uncle Dave!

I liked that movie.. Glenn Ford, and Sidney Poitier rocks!

Definitely not knocking it BronxBomber, it's one of my favorites, but looking back at that movie and reading some of these stories about school violence it DOES make the knife fight between Mr.Dadier and Artie West and his gang seem kind of tame.

Well, at least there's no chance she'll ever teach in that school again.

Or any other one for that matter.

What's the deal with teachers of late? It seems every other week you hear of one having sex with their students, they cherry pick what they teach, mostly seeing how they can slant our countries history to only show the negative.

Now they want to quit teaching about the Holocaust so they won't 'offend' those that don't believe it happened. The entire school system really needs a major overhaul.

avatar

I am a German teacher, and I have increased my coverage of the Holocaust to three weeks from two. I am even planning a tour of the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC for this fall. How could anyone think that Muslims would be offended? I would not doubt if some Muslims were also killed in the death camps.

avatar
Reply

Good on ya for that. I'm tired of all these freaks like Iran's president Ahmedimichaelmoorijad (the wannabe Cyrus the Great) saying the Holocaust never happened. The fact that the Holocaust was allowed to happen is one the most important things for people to never forget. Good teacher!

Good for you, however it has been reported that indeed the 'push' to scale back is in the owrks.

Slate- Stop pontificating about things you know nothing about. You are obviously not a teacher. "Cherry pick what they teach..."!!!!!!! Yeah right! States and school districts have solid guidlines about what teachers need to teach at each grade level. We have very few choices about what we teach.

I challenge any professional to teach in a public school for one year, in the same conditions and for the same pay as an average teacher. Most professionals would quit after a week or so. Heck... subsitute for one day and see what it's like.

I love my job. I love the kids. Yes, even the boogers. What I hate is the general public's blatant disrespect and slander of teachers. Who taught you to read and write? You wouldn't be able to read Netscape stories or message boards without those skills. Have you ever thanked a teacher for giving your the gift of reading and writing skills? Didn't think so.

(Slate- Stop pontificating about things you know nothing about.)

Yes Cherry Pick is right.

Islamic Studies Week happens every year in my son's school discussing Ramadan, yet they removed teachings about Christendom and their Holidays. They discuss every sort of 'Diversity' when it comes to social issues but don't allow a dissenting view to be brought forth. They only teach blurbs about our founding fathers value after they are denounced for their ownership of slaves. One teacher stated in my son's class that the world would be better off if our president were assassinated!

I'm not saying that all teachers are bad but it does appear that something isn't right with all the incidents of sexual misconduct of late.

It's true; I'm no teacher nor am I a fireman, a senator, a congressman, a soldier an ambassador, a head of state or a scientist. I am however well informed, just as most here are on this site. One doesn't have to hold an office or degree, as well as work in a certain profession to be able to glean what's going on and 'discuss' or have a view of the issues at hand as far as I can tell. If that is the case, a site such as this one would be a moot point don't you think? I hope I didn't pontificate too much and I offer you to discuss Environmental Consulting, which is my profession anytime you like even though you work in a 'different' field.

Slate;

Teachers have less and less input on thier curriculums since Le Shrub instituted 'Most Children Left Behind'.

Teaching to tests meand a very narrow, federally approved range of educational material. I know a few teachers, and hear from even more...they are frusterated as Hell over the Federal Bullsh!t they gotta put up with, and teach just to keep Federal funding.

Remember; this regieme is all about privatization: he tried it on SS, he did it on so many others, Cleaning services at Federal Hospitals...(Walter Reed Army Hospital is only the tip of the iceburg) Health Care, the Pharmaceutical Industry screamed Bloody Murder over the State of Wisconsin instituting Senior Care; which allows the State to negotiate the price of drugs;using the leverage of all of those Seniors to get lower prices.Bush is DEMANDING that the State of Wisconsin drop Senior Care; because it isn't 'fair' to the DRUG CORPORATIONS!!!

But I digress.

avatar
Reply

My point being; if Bush can totally ruin public schools, he can push its privatization. So it ain't all the teachers to blame. In Fact; most of the big story stuff(Especially FOX news) has all of the hallmarks of a Red-Herring type diversion. True enough;there are bad apples in any barrel.

But the unrelenting attention upon this issue looks suspicious to me.

Happy Easter!!!!

STONERS:

Good submission as usual.

To everyone else who has submitted a comment to this story, I think there have been just as many female "predators or pedaphiles" as males. It's just easier to talk about it with the advent of the internet and text messaging.

Two things, my high scbool psychology teacher fell in love and married one of her students. They waited to anything until after he graduated high school.

Second, you go after any child of mine (I only have one) in an inappropriate or illegal way you will be going down. You will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law period.

avatar

You raise a good point. Often there are cases of teachers fresh out of college who are 21 or 22 and fall in love with seniors who are 18 or 19. It would be incredibly difficult to fault them if they wait till after the student graduates.

As for what has gone wrong with some teachers? They got past the devices in place that keeps out the bad apples. Some states are weaker than others for regulating who is approved. In some cases, all one needs to be a teacher is a college degree in a discipline and the money to pay for the certification. Without having a student attend a College of Education, those who should not be certified are never screened out of the process.

One of the things that is wrong with some of the school systems is their inability to deal with teacher misconduct. They quietly allow a teacher to quit and move on to another teaching position without anything in their records about the reasons for leaving their former job. They don't want the negative publicity. It's bad enough not punishing the teacher for their misconduct but inexusable for dumping their problems on another school system without warning.

avatar
Reply

You are absolutely right. The same lesson should be taught to Catholic bishops for their inexcusable way of sending bad priests from one parish to another.

avatar
Reply

This is simply not true. And who are "they". You shouldn't make hasty generalizations unsupported by facts. I've been a teacher and administrator in the public school system for 20 years and I can promise you I've never even heard of any type of sexual misconduct where administration "turned a blind eye". And I can guarantee you a known "pedofile" in the public school system would never be hired or transferred (like with Catholic Priests). All states require Fingerprint Clearance Cards prior to employment w/ a district. Every time something bad happens in public education, everyone hears about it. But that's a good thing I guess because it simply means the perpetrator was caught.
