"We are shocked. In one month six lions have been killed"
In all six cases, claws, skulls and bones of the lions were missing when their carcasses were found at the Gir wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat.
The bones are used for traditional Chinese medicine and the claws are worn by some men as pendants in the hope of increasing their virility.

The number of lions in Gir, where they are protected and bred in natural conditions, had risen to 359 in 2005 from 327 in 2001, a government census showed.
But the animals face other dangers besides poaching.
Twenty-one Asiatic lions have drowned in Gujarat after falling into wells over the past five years, raising fresh concern about how authorities are protecting them.
India is also struggling to save its endangered tigers, as people invade their habitat and poachers kill them for body parts that fetch huge sums on the international black market.

It's called faith by superstition. Just as people follow Allah and a Christian God these people treasure claws, teeth and feet. This has been going on for a long time. Likely just as enduring as Christianity. And probably just as valid. Your not going to receive virility through prayer either. And the True Cross was afterall taken from the Christians at the Battle of Hattin as they were being slaughtered. That is the true power of superstition.
I heard an estimate that over 100,000 species will go extinct this century so this is not surprising. They will slaughter the rest of the cats if they are found in the wild. They know no better. Sad but true.

prosecute everyone under the penatly of death. shooting or possessing it should not matter.. sometimes i think the sooner everthing on this planet is killed off the better. sooner or later it will happen.. hopefully the animals last longer than the people.. we have been trying so hard to screw this planet up over the last 100 years we do not deserve to be the only surviving creatures.

The perpetrators ought to make pretty good lion food. Don't execute them. Just let the lions take care of business.

The Indians' and Asians' "resource management style" is starting to look a little ugly....
These are the same people who cut a shark's fins off and then throw him back to die in agony, or kill a nearly extinct rhino to only cut its horn off and then let the animal rot on the ground-
-not to mention pressure google into censoring Tienemin Square inquiries-
The worst part is its always for some stupid aphrodisiac or something. Really, doesn't India have enough Indians, China have enough Chinese? I thought China in particular was overpopulated and selling us their surplus girl-babies.
Poachers from any country must pay...
These endangered animals that are being eliminated after living here for so many millennia can't protect themselves or avenge themselves...
Humans are destroying them. Humans have to save them.

There is no room in this world any longer for such ignorance. I don't know what the answer is, but one has to be found. To allow a very few to impact the whole in this way is beyond excuse.

It's my experience that poachers shoot game wardens on a regular basis and combined with really low pay there is little incentive to protect the game.
A few of the african nations are using tourism to pay for game reserves and their managment including game wardens with a shoot to kill policy.

Things like this makes me wonder why we bother with these countries!! They are so stupid to consider eating animals parts for cures and then you have the rich jerks that will pay to have a nice lion rug in front of the fire place.
BOYCOTT any thing made by or from these countries!
As long as there is a market they will continue the killing.

Hi EE - I hear you loud and clear about the boycott....but has anyone else tried to boycott China? I have - pretty much impossible these days I am very sad to say. As for India...well, if you have a credit card, computer, etc. and want support/Customer Service, well, generally India handles it. Pretty depressing overall...

Being a Leo this makes me very sad. Of all the cats the lion is truly a noble beast. But as much as this makes people mad it has always happened. And it will always happen until goverments take a stronger stand against things like this. But I really do not see that happening in my life time. Once again a noble creature is destroyed for the folly of man.

Do these poachers like they do the Elephant Poachers in Nina. On the spot no questions ask. That is the only thing that will even cause the poacher to think about not doing this again.

Indians do not use Lion , elephant, Tiger or Rhino parts for any aphrodesiac, virility charm etc. It is against Hinduism. Its the Rich Chinese who use the parts. Poor Chinese cant afford the $500 an ounce.
Just to clear the Air for those of the uneducated masses who think otherwise.
But before we go attacking the Asians, remember we kille dout the passenger pigeon because it was fun. We have endangered the polar bear, hunted whales, kodiaks, timber wolves and grey wolves to near extinction and we have a few fools out west who arrange coyote hunting sprees....yeah, we are really better than the asians.
Animals have rights just like people, but like people, if no one defends their rights, its all hot air. Humans and animals get abused daily, who wants to stop it?

Whoppsie there -- "Animals have rights just like people..." Absolutely NOT TRUE. Animals have ONLY the rights that are GIVEN to them BY people. In fact, the other day, I asked the squirrel who lives in the maple tree in front of my house if he could recite their Constitution or Bill of Rights. Just looked at me like I was..... well, squirrely. And, if animals have rights, shouldn't every gazelle that has been eaten by a lion have relatives in court demanding the imprisonment of the lion for murder. Or at least a cash settlement. You see what a silly statement that is? None of which is to say that I think it's OK to butcher a rare animal just to sell some idiotic Chinaman some "aphrodesiac" - that doesn't work anyway. Idiots everywhere.

Wraith you are right AND wrong, Those 'hunts' for coyote and or other hunters, are for a slightly different reason. I'm not saying i think they should do it, but its an issue of over population and the fact that they are negatively effecting the livestock population there. So its less food for us to eat. Its sad that we do the things we do in EVERY avenue that involves Guns, and ammo. I dont want to ****** off anyone or everyone, but why must we dominate things? from animals to enemies, we (and i'm not just speaking about americans, however I want it known i mean us too)kill and control instead of learn share and adapt. With out getting into a GOD versus no GOD debate, he gave us these big useful brains, or we developed these huge brains to USE! not to stick with the basic eat and fear learned behaviors we seem to eager to exibhit when ever something 'new' or different comes along!?

slightly different reasons? poachers/ranchers want to make $ period.
The problem really lies with the people who buy these things, if there was no market, poachers would make $ by other means.
so we think it's kinda ok for ranchers to protect their livlyhood, their profits, I can somewhat understand that much easier then I can killing rare wild animals for a belief that it would bring some kind of virility. POACHERS so greedy, people who buy and or use poached animals should be viewed just as harshly.

maybe in the not so distant future of the world there will be more cannibalism in more countries, because WE'Ve killed many species. Its a disheartening/horrific thought of the World of Tomorrow.

Now, c'mon Nate- that's just wrong. Poachers have rights, just like other animals. They deserve to be stalked and hunted. But you can't go around saying it. It's not P.C.
I thought of a way to save the world today. If we put all the politicians in one building, and all the terrorists in one plane...

i dont have a prob with a hunter killing and eating the meat unless its an endangered species....and deer rnt
this story about big cats is sad but i dont think there is much we can do about it in africa...what americans can change tho is protecting our own national treasures, our own endangered species which the current admin has assulted by gutting the list....bushes plan to sell off more national parks lands needs stopped but with this admin there r sooo many probs its hard to make govt lands a headline item....many of these lands he wants to sell r small strips so peops dont see the big problem but if they r coridors that r important in migration patterns they should be protected

The thrill of the hunt is cool.
Spraying yourself with Eau de deer pee scent is another thing.
The meat? Lean and quite good, as long as you have a good recipe. I like Elk and Buffalo is good, but I don't think it is game meat anymore.
Gross to find a few hairs in a steak. (I did that to myself the first time I cooked it...)
I like the stuff cooked in a slow cooker for hours, til it falls apart.
Philosophy: as long as I can afford to go to the butcher, I will.
The significant other got an albino deer one year and the tanned hide is sitting in the basement, after years of telling to mount it on a nice piece of oak and put it on the wall. That was very cool. It didn't snow that year. The poor (dear) deer didn't have a chance.

"why not focus on their disapearing habitats.", actually, the two go hand in hand.

that was my point about keeping govt lands that connect their habitats so they can roam from one to the next with out danger

they just had a special running on animal planet about those lions. I hope none of the six were the ones on the special.....they were in pretty rough shape already. there are very few left and they only live in one small area. apparently they were almost wiped out by game hunting about a century(?) ago i think they were down to only 20.

Maybe the WWF can start a smear campaign condeming those that use these products to a lifetime of premature ejaculation and undersized willy's. Then promote the only true path to 'swordsmanship'- consume massive amounts of mosquito's and stink bugs. (it just may work)
