Another vicious criminal act.Three productive lives snuffed out by a "handgun" ? Wait, there are strict ,very strick laws against ownership of guns in NY. Sullivan Act etc.etc. H-m-m-m Why didn't those laws work ? Or are there exceptions ?
I guess criminals can't read. Right ?
(In practice, New York authorities rarely issue permits to anyone except retired police officers and those who have political influence, wealth, or celebrity.)

True in a sense, however, there are a lot of law-abiding idiots out there that are kept out of the mix. I don't hear too many cases of first graders bringing daddy's gun to school in NYC--because daddy doesn't own one.

Actually, the lives were snuffed out by a guy USING a handgun... even though two of the guys that died had no handguns of their own (what the hell were they thinking?). Don't get the two confused. And those two wouldn't have been killed, except they interfered (well, seeing as they were "volunteer" cops--whatever that is--I understand the interferance). If there was no gun, this guy probably would have knifed the original guy, or clubbed him. A gun was just the weapon of choice. When someone wants someone dead, they don't have to use a gun.

Eddie Izzard once said...
"And the National Rifle Association says that, "Guns don't kill people, people do," but I think the gun helps, you know? I think it helps. I just think just standing there going, "Bang!" That's not going to kill too many people, is it? You'd have to be really dodgy on the heart to have that..."
But in all seriousness, if he had a knife or a club, he probably would not have taken out 2 undercover police officers... we could argue all day about that. Heck, I could use a rolled up newspaper to kill someone... George Carlin told us that one. It might be messy, it might take a while, but I am sure the job could get done.

Not so Sedilia, If you've never been arrested, then you can obtain a pistol license in any of the following catagories: Target License,Carry permit,or Premises permit.
*Target liscense: you can get as many guns as you like provided that you can take them, unloaded, and in a case, ammunition taken separately, to your local gunrange.
*Premises permit: the same but more restricted it is only to be used in defense of your house, and property. You can however go to the gunrange with it as well, as a matter of fact it is mandatory but getting more guns would'nt likely be permitted.
*Carry Permit: This is issued for store owners that deal with a lot of cash, armed security guards,& private investigators doing body-guard type work with the proviso that your to wear them only if your on duty until you get home from work, after that, your not to wear your gun until your on your way to work again.
The gun that will be issued to you however is a 38.six-shot revolver only.

This is what happens when "guaranteed in thirty minutes or less" goes horribly wrong. Sounds like this guy's seen too many movies and was unaware that the police actually practice shooting--just in case they run into an idiot like this.

Whenever I read a story like this I always think too bad that the government has made it so difficult for regular working people to protect themselves. In a world with rational government armed citizens customers inside the pizza joint would have been able to dispatch the criminal beast right then and there and the two heroic cops would not have been viciously slayed.

Guess he didn't like the service. Better watch that New York waiter attitude.
For your info, the Sullivan Act does not preclude a resident from obtaining a fire arm. The old school of thought that a police captain has to approve it is just that.
A gun permit cannot be denied unless the person is a felon or mentally retarded. That was established by NY Supreme Court decision quite some time ago. Better get up to date if you live there. Better arm yourself too. A SALUTE TO BERNARD GETZ!! My hero.

Well, here is another case of Mayor "Anti-gun" Bloomberg and the NYPD screwing up royally! Just think, wouldn't you love being an auxiliary police officer in uniform so you become a target for every dirt-bag idiot in New York, and the City government sends you out on the mean streets totally unarmed? Result, two dead young men who had the best chance of not only stopping this guy, but could have also survived to live a long life themselves. Then, the best that Bloomberg can say is that it was a horrible day for the NYPD and the City of New York! What about the two auxiliary officers and their families?! As usual, the victims are just numbers and don't matter! When will people like Bloomberg begin to realize that an armed citizenry is the finest and best deterrent against crime in the streets?

Argue it as you may the terms for a "HANDGUN permit "issuance.
It was a "may issue" vs."shall issue " decision that you are noting. Unfortunately, criminals don't bother with the legality of ANY permit... Duh ! Besides, the police are NOT obligated to protect YOU (regardless of the situation ) but rather the PUBLIC AT LARGE . That was proven in the SUPREME COURT ruling. Now doesn't that make you feel safer? It's OK.
Just make it illegal to commit a crime...Simple isn't it. The Brady Bunch thinks so.
Care to check the numbers of killings with ILLEGAL firearms in Washington D.C. per year as compared to Iraq ? It might be enlightening AND put things into perspective. With those numbers in mind Iraq is a minor league.

I'm surprised that no one has said the ususal.... It's Bush's fault! LOL
O and guns don't kill people, it's people killing people! Keep in mind the 2 need eachother to be effective so.... swallow that one.
Here in the conservative OH (pray for me) we can buy guns and test for conceal and carry permits. Heck! I just had an officer recommend it to me. And I'm an excellent shot. Well atleast when I was using a shotgun at targets on our KY farm. (skeet shooting, that is) Still I have no gun b/c I don't know if it's the answer.
My heart goes out to the fallen and their families.
What the heck was the shooter thinking is always my question??!!

Good catch walden3. I wasn't paying attention to my RSS feed closely enough (plus I was busy monitoring Digg for "It is Bush's fault" worthy entries in which to comment, "It is Bush's fault".)
Oh, don't forget next Sunday's meeting for the Ohio chapter of the Left Wing Conspiracy Group. We are planning on having a free-form drum circle/lesbian basketball tournament prior to discussing ways to implement a Taliban style gun control program in Ohio. It's going to be at the Yellow Springs Vegan Coffee Collective. Bring your Little Red Book!

"oh i must have missed it. it is bush's fault"
unless, of course, it was clintons fault. i have come to love Netscape, and this is the reason why.
in this world something always goes wrong. now, instead of wasting precious time and energy trying to determine whos fault it was, i can simply fall back on the one lesson ive learned on Netscape, and that is.....
ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, EVERYTHING IS BUSHS FAULT, UNLESS ITS CLINTONS FAULT
thank you Netscape, you have changed my life ;)

Watch out, it is not the guns fault. To shoot someone 15 times, the shooter had to be on a revenge rampage. Likely related to the waiter and a female companion of the shooter or the waiter was past due on his drug bill. Whatever, the shooter was out of control. Sadly and tragically, two volunteer police officers were killed but note they were not armed. If both cops had been armed, the outcome would have been totally different and both cops may be alive. If you have a gun, carry it, if you carry a gun, know how to use it.

Let's not forget, two Auxiliary Cops are dead because of a tree-swinging savage. And the same "community leaders" that are screaming for the cops who killed Sean Bell to be indicted are not saying a darn thing about the current atrocity because they were cops and they were white and it doesn't further their cause.
May those auxiliary cops rest in peace.

Don't you see? those "community leaders" are racists. Also, they can't make a buck yelling about non-black victims. Al Sharpton is making over minimum wage now because he did the same thing over a gal who got "raped" but didn't really. Who knows, maybe the Sean Bell fuss will promote yet another Al/Jesse clone.

It is so very sad about the volunteer police officers, because they are just that...VOLUNTEERS ! They do not get paid nor are they allowed to carry a firearm. They are out on the streets just to help take the load off of the NYPD with traffic control, crowd control, to assess situations prior to regular police intervention and other functions where hopefully they will not encounter an armed suspect. Unfortunately they are also such targets because they do not carry a gun - wonder if they are allowed to carry a nightstick ?
I was an auxiliary police officer in my city - a rough "I wanna cut yo' gizzard out" type city near Gary, IN. All we could carry was a nightstick, nothing more. However we also carried Mag-lite flashlights. These make a secondary 'club'.
We were not supposed to go to a scene where there was a confirmed shooting in progress...sometimes things happened around us. It's a precarious 'job'. But a very satisfying one.

Have you noticed that even "Mag-lites" are getting bad press these days? I'm not sure but I think some cities do not allow their cops to carry them. Maybe L.A. Someone help me out here. I don't know nuthin'...

Thanks for your comment.

Thank God! Survial of the fittest has taken place once again!
If you are dumb enough to chase a wild animal umprotected. You deserve what you get!
his should also be the rule of law with aniaml hunters. Hand to hand, animal to animal. Shooting an animal fromm 100 yards is not a sport. It is slaughter. Make it a sport and fight the animal hand to hand. Use natures equipment to defeat your so called sport. Also make sure that your so called "target" knows that the game is afoot! Otherwise it seems to me that anyone should be able to snipe you the same, unknowingly!

I am a NYC Auxiliary Police Officer and have been for 19 years. Like the two killed I have a radio and a batton and I am a civilian. I have never felt my life in danger during parade details nor on regular patrols.
Why do I do it? It is called community service. I live in Harlem and I patrol in Harlem because I was always raised to give back to the community and this is how I choose.
Before you call someone a dumbass walk in soneone else's shoes first. There are conflicting reports wether they chased the perp or not.
Personally
It could have happend to any one of us. Yuu turn a corner and Bam! Problem right in front of you sees you and comes to you. Sometimes good sometimes bad. Either way you are there.
I pray the city governemnet doesn't change a thing about the program. I like it just the way it is. I like the uniform I wear and I DO NOT WANT A GUN! It is too much responsibility.

Setting up a young person to look like a cop when he ain't is a sorry mistake. Back in the 60's the Police in Boise, Idaho set up a lovely and realistic plywood cop car just outside of town. The plan was to fool people for a second or two and get them to drive slowly, etc. Within a very short time every manner of shotgun, rifle and pistol had been unloaded on the hapless prop. Guess it's gotta be the real thing or nothing at all.

You know what you wear when you Volunteer for the job. You take a 16 week training course that tells you what you are going to wear. I want the uniform I wear to stay the same. Because we "look" like cops, just standing there deters crime. If we wore something different the perps would spot us a mile away and not even care.
It takes two thing to commit a crime.
Desire and opportunity - Desire, Auxiliaries cannot do anything about, however, we can reduce the opportunity by being a presence. And the uniform is a major part of that presence.
This guy was on a mission to kill. Nothing could have stopped him from doing what he did. The APOs just turned the corner first.

Kind of weird, not carrying a weapon when you are any type of police officer, volunteer or not.
