Libbygate: Now Let's Get to the Real Story »
Posted By Spadecaller 1 year, 7 months ago in NewsSo Libby has taken the fall. Now maybe special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald can get down to the real business of finding out just why the entire White House smear operation was unleashed--why they went so far as to violate federal law and expose Wilson's CIA-operative wife, Valerie Plame.

"Entirely forgotten or ignored has been what this leak was all about to begin with."
"For that, you have to go back and look at what Wilson did in the first place that so enraged or frightened the Vice President and the President."
"And that was to go to Niger, one of the poorest nations in Africa, to prove conclusively that there was no truth to a set of forged notes on the letterhead of the Niger embassy in Rome, purporting to be receipts for 400 tons of Niger uranium ore allegedly being sought by Iraq's Saddam Hussein."
The real story and the real crime has yet to be revealed.

The case was lost as soon as the defense lawyers tried to paint Libby as a fall guy. By painting him as a fall guy they validated the prosecutions claim that there was a cover-up.

And this is why Mr. Libby should rot in jail, for protecting these criminals. I also think the Reporter should be sent to Prison. Our country is more important that a reporters source.
They put at risk the life of several agents all because they needed to protect their lies. I don't get how one can look at this and not see how wrong this is.
Over 3500 young men and women has died because of this lie and countless numbers of Iraq's citizens for what?

Just watched a clip this morning on GMA. Jurors are asking some questions and commenting on Libby as the fall guy. The one juror said they know Rove had a larger part, and wondered why he wasn't being charged.

Why isn't Richard Armitrage being charged?
He ADMITTED doing what Libby supposedly did but was not charged with.
Oh, I know, because truth isn't what you're after.

Libby was convicted of obstruction, perjury, and lying to the FBI. People are sitting in GITMO for less than this. Truth matters, character counts, and his conviction is just. Unless of course you think it is OK to lie to the FBI, OK to try and thwart criminal investigations, and OK to go before a Grand Jury and lie. Karl Rove's attorney took him back four times to amend his testimony so he would not be charged the same crimes. Tell the truth and you got no problems. But I guess truth isn't what you're after.

It's a corrupt bunch that are running things. Now that Libby has been convicted, I hope more of the story comes out. Including the theft of the diplomatic stationary and the Italian connection to those whole debacle.
If it were not so tragic, it would be the equivalent of an I Love Lucy plot. Let's hope they finally get caught.

The gravity of the crimes being covered up are so monumental and the reactionary power of the guilty parties involved (Cheney, Rove, Armitage, and Bush)is so great that Fitzgerald and Congress are too afraid to venture forth without irrefutable evidence. This lack of courage and conviction in Washington is a disgrace. We need to demand action from our representatives without delay.

The 'real crime' is the cover up of the Niger documents. Bush was told by the CIA that hussein did NOT try to buy uranium. Sooo, they went through evidence planted in the UK that he did. Bush was told by the CIA NOT to use that as fact. He used it as fact anyway. Wilson did an OP ED that brought it out, after we went to war. His wife was 'outed', changing the spotlight from the lie, to the conversation of outing an agent. They also sent Wilson a message. Congress needs to investigate the Niger lie. All trails lead to the oval office.
That lie, of hussein buying uranium, was the tipping point for justifying the war. 'Mushroom cloud' being the rhetoric which followed the lie. The media completely dropped the ball on that lie, once the outing of Wilson's wife happened. That's ALL they talked about, and what Wilson was trying to tell us, got buried.

In Oct.02, both houses of Congress authorized the use of force with eyes open and by a large majority. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, (D) of the Senate Intelligence Committee who had access to all the information at the time, said, I have come to the conclusion that the threat posed by Saddam's weapons of mass destruction is so serious that despite the risks and we should not minimize the risks, we must authorize the president to take the necessary steps to deal with that threat. There were many reasons to remove Saddam, according to the Congress that authorized the war there were 23, but the administration gave the public just one, the sensible fear of weapons of mass destruction that all thought were there. Unfortunately the weapons-stockpiles proved not to be there. So with that one rationale discredited, the partisan Democratic Congress suddenly reinvented itself in protesting that it had really voted for war on only one cause, not 23. And that is the real truth.

jordan11....another bald face lie...here's the truth....
The Butler Report affirmed what the British government had said about the Niger uranium story back in 2003, and specifically endorsed what Bush said as well.
Butler Report: By extension, we conclude also that the statement in President Bush's State of the Union Address of 28 January 2003 that "The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa" was well-founded.

Don't know how to read, do you. I realize what the UK said. The POINT was, they went through the UK when the CIA told them the uranium deal wasn't true. So you're saying, our intelligence was wrong, and the UK intelligence was right. I say, our intelligence was right, and the UK report was fixed. It was NOT shared with Congress, OR the American people, that OUR intelligence said there was no deal.

Any reasonable person must believe that Cheney and Bush willingly manipulated the facts to suit their predetermined agenda for the war in Iraq. The overwhelming evidence shows that the administration exploited Congress, the American people, and our troops. The results of their deceit is unconscionable; in fact, it is tantamount to mass murder and treason.
Wilson's trip to Niger confirmed the false accusation that Hussein had purchased "yellow cake" to obtain uranium for the purpose of constructing nuclear weapons. This nefarious ploy to convince Congress, coalition forces, and the American people to support a preemptive strike against Iraq should be thoroughly investigated. From the highest levels of the Bush administration-- including the President and Vice President -- each and every conspirator should stand before a tribunal, and be held accountable.
However, to encact such a course requires unquestionable proof, courage, and bipartisan support. Do we have these?

Another bald faced leftist DemLib lie.....
The famous "16 words" in President Bush's Jan. 28, 2003 State of the Union address turn out to have a basis in fact after all, according to two recently released investigations in the US and Britain.
Bush said then, "The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa ." Some of his critics called that a lie, but the new evidence shows Bush had reason to say what he did.
As you can plainly see, Bush NEVER said that Hussein had purchased "yellow cake' for the purpose of constructing nuclear weapons.....how you insane loonie bin escapees can stretch 'sought' into ' accusation that Hussein had purchased "yellow cake" to obtain uranium for the purpose of constructing nuclear weapons' is more proof that liberalism IS a mental disorder.....as if any more proof was really needed.....

The words in this article that loom large "act of high treason".....If this can be proven, and it seems reasonable especially in light of the other acts/lies that the Bush group has perpetrated on the American people...that Fitzgerald, our representatives and the media are obligated to move forward...obligated to reveal the truth and obligated to make those individuals accountable. Bush told us at the start that he would dismiss anyone found to have participated in the outing of Plame......

The U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence reported July 7, 2004 that the CIA had received reports from a foreign government (Britain) that Iraq had actually concluded a deal with Niger to supply 500 tons a year of partially processed uranium ore, or "yellowcake." That is potentially enough to produce 50 nuclear warheads.
The Senate report said Wilson brought back denials of any Niger-Iraq uranium sale, and argued that such a sale wasn't likely to happen. But the Intelligence Committee report also reveals that Wilson brought back something else as well -- evidence that Iraq may well have wanted to buy uranium.

Checks and balances should be promoted by the Democratic led House of Representatives to investigate all aspects of the reasons we went to war. I know, with all that has occured under Bush's reign, they will be busy but that is what our forefathers foresaw.
In the end a criminal will be pardoned, not maybe but assuredly. Thats why the prosecutor has determined that this case is now over concerning his prosecution unless new information comes forth. Do you really think Libby will tell all?
No way he already has a FREE GET OUT OF JAIL CARD IN HIS POSSESSION. If you deny this fact you are not facing reality within American Politics.
My question, Why did our forefathers give the president carte blanche in having this right? I cannot fathom the point of this benefit other than in the furtherance of criminal behavior. If anyone can give a logical explantion for this power of a president, other than a god given right, I would like to hear it.

It is hard to believe that the people of this country are so polarized as to the "right" and "left" that half of them are willing to turn a blind eye on this act. People have complained for years and years about how Washington gets more and more criminal all the time, and they feel that as citizens, their hands are tied. Now they have the opportunity to do something about it. They must put personal preferences aside, and demand that their congressmen and Senators band together, and hold these examples of "white trash" responsible for their actions. IF WE ALLOW THEM TO GET AWAY WITH THIS, WE ARE TELLING THE NEXT ADMINISTRATION THAT THEY TOO, CAN GO THIS FAR, AND NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE!
Write your congressman, and both your senators and demand a full investigation, as well as criminal prosecution!

yes lets get the real story--lets put wilson and plame in front of a grand jury--this whole case is nothing more than prosecutorial abuse of power--at the onset of all this wilson went before the senate intelligence commitee and they concluded EVERYTHING he was saying was not true--for you libs --LIES--cheney didnt send him to niger..his wifey did..etc ..etc..it was armitage who spewed plames identity all over and fitznutso knew a week after taking up his holy quest--that should have ended the case right there--but he decided to go fishing..the part that you left wing conspiracy nuts should be concerned about is that this is pure and simple , the criminalization of political opinion--and that is a real worry--let the libscape name calling begin--go scarlet knights--after 30 years i can finally say that without laughing

Thats right avoid the real issue and question I posted above. I make no distinction between Left or right in this question. Should a president have the power of pardon and if so, WHY?????????
Is this a gods gift for a president? Both sides of the aisles president has used it. Hell, Clintons brother was attempting to sell pardons. You Conservatives answer the question, is it right and proper? Should any president be above the law with pardon power?

Walden3 - That is extremely broad. Why would our forefathers have inserted it? No need for you Walden to answer that one. But if anyone else can answer it, i'm here to listen to reason.
I wish I had that power. I would be omnipotent. I would be GOD. Now who would give anyone that power within a democracy. I now have questions about the actions of the drafters of our constitution.

The full story says that there was no illegal outing. The only "guilt" was some stuff that might have been misconstrued, forgotten, etc. The conspiracy buffs should at least look at all conclusions.
My question is, why was it ok for Clinton to lie while someone else gets a jail sentence.

Yes. The President should continue to have Pardon Power. President Ford took the heat and gave Pres. Nixon a pardon for Watergate. History has shown that Mr. Ford wrestled with this decision, and the buck stopped with him. President Ford knew his choice was politically unpopular, yet I believe he sincerely was concerned about the country, enough to withstand the critics. This is leadership.
This power has been used sparingly in U.S. History, and rightly so, yet this is a power we give to any President of any party.
If enough believe that this power is overreaching on the part of the executive, then Congress can try to change The Constitution. (or sneak the matter through the Courts..ala Roe V. Wade). My point is, that I think Pardon power is necessary for The Executive Branch. This power is another reason to chose carefully in "08.

ONEMEMPHISDUDE - Thanks for your reply but during that pardon of Nixon by Ford I remember excerpts from the pardon issue and it has not been used sparingly by Presidents. I think you need to check your facts and I will research the issue since this thread is lacking informtion on this issue.
Thats the reason Clinton's brother was attempting to sell pardons, it has been going on for many years to the detriment of true justice within America. In other words we have wolves in the chicken coop.

he worked at the state department for 20 years.
"Ambassador Wilson holds the Department of Distinguished Service Award, the Department of State Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards, the University of California, Santa Barbara Distinguished Alumnus Award, and the American Foreign Service Association William R.
