The painting, Rockwell's "Russian Schoolroom," was snatched during a late-night burglary at a gallery in Clayton, Mo., on June 25, 1973. The Oscar-winning filmmaker purchased the painting in 1989 from a legitimate dealer and didn't know it was stolen until last week, the FBI said in a statement.

Well now, the haiku words here are "legitimate dealer".
This is not the same as the lucky guy who reportedly--and unknowingly--purchased that diminuative, 110-million-dollar Degas sculpture from an equally clueless garage-sale spieler (sic). No, the dealer who abandoned this painting for his thirty pieces of silver back in '89 most probably knew exactly what he had, if not its source, and precisely why he sold it to this particular buyer. To deny any culpability would be in both their best financial interests and also keep them free as birds. Don't despair, though--nobody's going to the hoosegow over this one; they just got caught.
So, I guess the question for our hapless former Phoenix resident is this: "Hey, Steve, ol' boy, who ratted you out?"

People, people, that was not ORIGINAL Rockwell's work. In China (still behind West in modern art) every good artist is making living by painting from original... it looks JUST AS AN ORIGINAL and "poor" Spielberg purchased as an "original".
How I know that. My God, I had painted many, many reproductions of old masters, before I changed my style... You can read it and see it in my profile...

You gotta be kidding me. Next thing you know, flatulence will be blamed on Bush. How can this be Bush's fault? What was he supposed to do? Put finding a painting on the top of his priority list?
1. This was a comment made to attract attention
2. You are really convicted Bush could have done something about this.
Please explain, Poodledo!

Poodledo,
Kindly forgive my having noticed, but if that's your "handle", don't add the extra vowel.
Ah, yes--poor, old Lame Duck Calamity George: so proud of his silver spoon he had it bronzed.

you must be right, because everything since the beginning of time is either clinton or bushs fault. LOL

Good point. Where was Bush on June 25, 1973? Was that during his AWOL period?

They sure do keep leaving out the "Legitimate Dealer's" name in each "news" item I see about this painting.
Anyone know how a "Statute of Limitations" might work on a deal like this?

LMAO... What did you expect he would say?
Don't legit sellers verify that they're not selling stolen works? ummmmm, yea! A legit seller watches his/her own toosh!
So you know where I'm going with this.....

Doodle --
I assume that there are ways of "laundering" art material just as there are of doing the same for archeological stuff.
Also FYI, Clayton is a wealthy suburb of St. Louis (also the county seat of St. Louis County). It most likely would have decent security, though probably not overwhelming; certainly not at King Tut level.

In the face of temptation one must ask themselves:
What would Yoda do?
Did you Steven, did you?

How did Spielberg wind up with it? Why it took so long to identify it?
Looks like somebody was asleep at the wheel.

It is called receiving or dealing in stolen goods and it is a criminal offense that a common citizen would spend time behind bars for. Oh, but Spielberg's rich, Hollywood elite and will be allowed to get out of it free. Besides, he knows the governor and a lot of powerful politicians who can make it all go away.
A perfect example of corruption in government?
