It says they will walk down the mountain shortly after they warm up... but I'm still curious as to what exactly 'assist in their own' rescue entails.

The Associated Press is reporting them as rescued, though they are still on the mountain.

Three were killed on that mountain a month ago. People were are at risk rescuing those fools. How much anger if a fireman died rescuing an arsonist from the fire he had started!!!

A few years ago, three climbers got stranded on Mt Rainer, had to be rescued. Three weeks later, same three, same mountain, same results.

Let's see - mountain climbing in the Pacific Northwest during the winter... this sounds to me like it SHOULD have been an exercise in Darwinian selection. And nearly was. Dumbasses!

Where do the funds come from for these rescues? There should be a reimbursement to the taxpayers by these people. Taxpayer money should not be used to assist those in pursuit of these type of extreme activities.

There is something about snow. It is alluring. IT will steal your soul. And try to snatch your life. You have to spend years living in it to understand it. They should have spent some cash and hired a guide. Hey folks, support the local economy! It is just as magical with a guide.

VOR, generally there is a fee to climb a mountain, and this fee is what pays for mountain rescues. If there isn't a fee, the person rescued generally pays for the rescue, and the price is quite hefty.

I've climbed Hood twice, the mountain is pretty captivating at first sight. I've always wanted to climb it in winter, add a little more challenge into the equation. It's definitely one of the most amazing feelings of accomplishment as well as one of the most awesome experiences one could ever have.

The only time people are worthy of the resent directed by most of you is if they were unprepared or not experienced enough. Obviously the sport isn't for those of you who don't understand it, but that doesn't mean you have to bash those who do.

P.S. My tax money goes to GW's war, and it costs about 300 billion dollars more than that rescue that was covered by climbing fees, AND I don't support it. Quit bitching for the sake of bitching please.

Is the climbing fee in the tens of thousands, like it costs for several days of search and rescue?

The issue of whether or not to, and how to, recoup costs from climbers who require rescue is debated regularly, and with good reason.

BTW, the comparison to the war is a complete non sequitur.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, and my radio station today had a brief interview with a climber they described as, "a very cautious climber, which is why he has multiple Everests."

First of all, by definition, a cautious climber has zero Everests.

Secondly, the guy said this is a bad time of year for Hood. People shouldn't be doing this.

I, too, am sick of such blatant risk-takers sucking up taxpayer money for rescues.

Let me see, $300 for a toilet seat, 300 plus tons of cash missing in Iraq, etc. The government waste of our tax money so far exceeds the search and rescue on Mt. Hood, that I'd rather spend my time bitching about what the government is wasting. And this doesn't even address the issue of Pork Barrel spending by congress.

The dog would have lived longer than the people would have. It was worth it at any cost just to save the dog.

Just because an A$$ hole is throwing away our $$ in Iraq it doesn't make it alright to throw away money saving an A$$ hole from a mountain - not only that - the rescuee could become president someday and the bailout would be uncalculatable

Animals will love you no matter what. You can tell a lot about people who do not like animals. They are mean spirited and selfish.

The people would have froze, long before eating the dog. If it were up to me one of the people would be eaten before my dog would.

The people choose to go hiking. The dog was an innocent and went along because he had no choice.

I grew up in central Maine. We have some nice mountains around us. The biggest being Katahdin. I have never ceased to be amazed by people who wait until the harshest part of the year to climb. At least they had the MLU (mountain location unit) with them or we would have been reading about another recovery, not a rescue.

Mountain Search & Rescue organizations are primarily staffed by volunteers and they do it because they love it. Don't worry, the rescued climbers will be presented with a bill for their "rescue". The Park Service rescues more hikers and boaters than they do climbers. Don't make blanket statements regarding "dumass climbers". This just happens to be better TV than the extrication of a hiker with a broken ankle in the middle of summer. We live in a "help me" society now. For most climbers, we accept the fact that we may die in the mountains and will happily go out of this world doing what we love to do. There is no tragedy...that is made up by the media.

Taxpayers end up paying for quite a bit, unfortunately. I think that climbers should be required to carry locating devices (I think this group had one) and charged accordingly. We get 1-3 groups of (idiot) lost climbers who have to be rescued every year on Hood. Despite it looking like an easy climb, there are a *lot* of dangers, especially close to spring.

Hood River County Sheriff's Office estimates a rescue operation costs it spent roughly $5,000 a day for the first three days and about $6,500 a day after that if the rescue operation continues

Black Hawk helicopters are estimated to cost $2,800 an hour to operate if they have to be used

Oregon law does not require victims to pay for rescue efforts unless they were negligent and failed to take basic steps to keep themselves safe. And in those cases, costs are limited to $500 per person. Other costs are absorbed by the state and local agencies involved

I heard this morning that Oregon legislators are looking at changing the law

For my money, taking basic steps to insure your own safety would include NOT going up on a mountain in the winter. Sorry, I admire pretty landscape just as much as the next guy, but I can't see ANY excuse for doing something that damn stupid.
