Well this time I will not be considered a Liberal. I believe in a womens right of choice concerning abortion, totally against our Sovereigns war in Iraq but same sex marriage, absolutely Not.
Same sex couples living together as partners is their business and nobody elses. But when you attempt to challenge the norm within society concerning marriage between a man and women by passing laws that accepts this concept, I disagree strongly.
Tolerance should be the accepted practice in America unlike so many other countries in the world but I wish they would keep some things private and not offend so many.

This isn't about passing laws. It's about recognizing Constitutional rights. Those rights already exist, and have existed since we became a nation. Eventually, people will 'get' that we are a nation of 'equal rights.' If govt. deems to be in the marriage business, then government is obliged to follow the Constitution. If government doesn't want 'gay's' to marry, then government needs to get OUT of the marriage business.

If you have ever been witness to a Gay Pride parade or one of the gay oriented parties like Southern Decadence or have been to Pensacola, FL for Memorial Day which has become a gay holiday here, then you will understand why the mainstream community has a hard time getting behind gay marriage.
The Gay Community consistantly claims to only want the same rights afforded to mainstream America, but I am unaware of an event in mainstream America where you can walk around topless and or bottomless on a public family beach with children present and have sex in public. These events easily exceed spring break in their debauchery, and anyone who points that out is labeled an intolerant homophobe.

"...but I wish they would keep some things private and not offend so many."
Such were the arguments presented in the 1950's against interracial marriage.
As we progress societal norms and standards of morality change. It is important to keep in mind the origins of marriage, what it was like then, and what it means today. As most people are aware of, marriage initiated as a religious union that was granted by the church. Only members of the same denomination and social class were allowed to wed.

Continued:
In the United States, marriage gained legal status, and today is both a civil union, and a legal contract. Married people have different rights, different legal obligations, and pay taxes differently than singles. Can we say that not everyone should be allowed to wed? This generation may be offended by homosexual marriages, but the next won't, and the one after that will have accepted it as part of the norm- just as we today accept what our ancestors didn't.
It is also important to note that our nation was founded on the principal, among others, of majority rule, but minority rights. Just because the majority may be offended by a certain behavior, it does not follow that the minority has no right to engage in it.

I don't understand how 2 people in a loving, committed relationship in any way affects you. All this law is doing is creating equality of rights for all Americans. Gay people pay their taxes as well and therefore should be treated the same under the law.
Also, America is actually one of the least tolerant countries when it comes to homosexuality. We are one of the last bastions of inequality. Even third world countries have legalized same sex unions.

Hi all, several things are very clear to me, from this and previous boards talking about homosexuality.
If a person is Gay, they'll scream bloody murder it's normal and no amount of talk will change their minds.
Oppose them on it and expect to be hugely attacked.
The argument is somewhat like arguing about the Sun - either the Sun exists or it doesn't, or arguing about the Holocaust - either it happened or it didn't, maybe it is even somewhat like arguing about the existence of God, and whether or not He created humans to be a certain way.
Who is familiar with NATURAL LAW, with observing Nature, as God created it, and recognizing How the Creator intends things to be?
What is "very clear" from the physical structure of the male body IS that it is the compliment of the structure of the female body, thus meant to be together.
Creating children cannot be done by 2 males or 2 females; thus, and all male or all female parental home is abnormal for the raising of children.

I am quite SICK of hearing La De Da about having equal rights.
Maybe some of you need to hear about EQUAL RIGHTS
Some years ago a Baptist minister in St. Paul, MN spoke to his congregation on the topic of the sinfulness of homosexual sex acts and the Gay community heard about it.
THEN, during one of this Pastor's Church services (and let me be clear, the service was held "inside" of the Baptist Church), a large Gang of Gays forced their way into the church and physically attacked the parishioners and busted up the interior of the building.
Sadly, no arrests were made because the Police feared riots and reprisals from the Gay community if they dared arrest any of the Trespassers.
Maybe someone would like to explain "Equal Rights" to me.
Did the Pastor have the Right to Free Speech, to speak to his congregation about what is sinful or not?
Did anyone (I care not who) have a right to Trespass on private property, attack people and destroy property?

It would be interesting to see the facts behind the case you just presented. I'm not saying it did or didn't happen. But a summary without record doesn't lead to credibility.
No one should be attacking others. I agree with that. However, verbal attacks that in turn do cause physical harm and attacks to the gay community eventually drive people to take action. Much like Martin Luther King, Jr. used peaceful protests, direct action was the choice of Malcom X - he believed as many do that direct action is the only way to get people to stop, listen and see the real harm their words and actions cause.
Any person has a right to free speech as long as it does not cause harm to the community. The Supreme Court has ruled you cannot yell "fire" in a movie theater if there is no fire. Why? Because the public safety outways the rights of the one individual who wanted to scream "fire".

Hi Nelson and all,
With little comment on New Jersey's Legislature - except to say that I see politicians willing to do almost anything to get votes, let me speak to WISCONSIN and our situation
In the last election, we voted on a Constitutional Amendment commonly called the Marriage Amendment - its exact wording was:
"Marriage. Shall section 13 of article XIII of the constitution be created to provide that only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state and that a legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized in this state?"
It passed by a huge majority in spite of much publicity trying to confuse voters on what a Yes or No vote really meant.
So, if you are Gay, do NOT come to Wisconsin expecting to get married; and if you are a Gay here in Wisconsin, may I suggest you will be happier in Massachusetts or New Jersey.

Gays are recruited, not generated. This is a destructive element in our country. Read stories of those who left this lifestyle. They agree among themselves that this is wrong, but seek validation from us that they are OK.

Absolute hog wash. The only 'destructive' element in this society is prejudice and bigotry, of which YOU contribute.

I notice that no one refutes that gays believe they are wrong. Destructive? How about a shorter than average life, higher than average drug use, pediophilia, mental disturbance. Things like a homosexual taping a diaper around a childs head to prevent crying and the resulting death never made the news because it occured in a gay home.

Right, and you found this bit of information where? Nearly all scientific studies on this subject have deemed one's sexuality to be a matter outside of personal choice.
(I say nearly only because I haven't seen all of them.)

I accidentally gave you a positive vote. You are really wrong on the ex gay issue. There has never been a case of successful "treatment" to cease to be homosexual. The desire will always be there. It is denial to not act on those urges and if you look closely, the suicide rate among so called ex gays is very high. Attitudes like yours are the reason so many gay kids kill themselves. Their blood is on your hands.
