Below-Zero Temps Hit Plains, Northeast »
Posted By TechnologyExpert 1 year, 8 months ago in NewsA bone-chilling Arctic cold wave with temperatures as low as 38 below zero shut down schools for thousands of youngsters Monday, halted some Amtrak service and put car batteries on the disabled list from the northern Plains across the Great Lakes. The cold was accompanied by snow that was measured in feet in parts of upstate New York.

Climate change, aka Global Warming, is a shift in the overall temperatures of the planet as opposed to just an overall increase. When some parts get warmer and cause polar melting, raised sea levels, and other phenomen the weather of regions becomes more extreme.
Basically warm up the wrong parts (polar regions) and the rest of the world climate changes.

So in other words, the northeast and midwest is the new artic????. NOT. Global warming is a natural occurance with the earth cycle. Yes the people are causing some of the changes but not most. Gore and people like him are just causing panic so that others on top can make money.

True and there was not a bit of ice in sight. That was all at the poles, of course. Now when the land mass broke up and started seperating some of the land at the equator ended up at the South Pole and hence that land that was at the equator now has ice. By the way the land masses are still moving but not at a rate that can be detected in a single human life span.

Yes there have been natural temperature changes due to volcanic and solar activity and if you draw the graphs of the two they go hand in hand. Unfortunately in recent years the rise in temperature cannot be explained by volcanic and solar activity. Now we place the graph of human generated pollution starting from the industrial revolution and lo and behold we see a correlation with the unexplained temperature rise (and it is a steep rise). All this is based upon observation and fact. That is enough for me to believe global warming and why the money power men make such an effort to deny it in order to look after their own selfish short term interests.

I love the irony behind the fact some Americans hit such a low in their faith in American and European scientific accomplishments that they are citing Russian scientists as more credible sources.
It's not like there would ever be corruption in Russia. It's not like Russian economy depends on oil at all. For those who are not in the know, Putin happens to be one of the most staunch environmentalists in the world, that's why Russia sporadically cuts off oil to Europe so that Poland and other countries can practice being eco-friendly.
In the secret FSB (new KGB) meetings he personally declared that Russia conquered Chechnya so that it can turn it into green country that didn't have to rely on all the oil located there. And no Russia did not invade Chechnya, because of its oil. Russia has no interest in oil, only in the future of the planet's children.

Global cooling is already happening and actually keeps global warming in check. Now how damn frightening is that?

LOL. Remember back in the 70's when the Global Cooling scare was being pumped up?
Yep, some of the Ice is melting in Antartica while the snow cover in the interior central regions is getting thicker.
Glaciers are melting in Greenland (thats what glaciers do) while other areas are getting more snow than they have ever had.
I saw today where Dr. Chicken Little, PhD, issued a press release indicating that the sky is falling. Run, Hide, Run.

This article was disputed by IAMVERB in another post:
" Next time you link to someone, you might want to check their credentials first.
Tim Ball claims, in the article you linked to, that he is "the first Canadian Ph.D. in Climatology" - which isn't true. Since there is no such thing as a Ph.D. in Climatology, it's hard to understand what he means by this. He says himself, later in the same paragraph, that he holds a Ph.D. in Science from London, which is also not true. He holds a Ph.D. in Geography, which is neither a Ph.D. in Science or Climatology (not that there is such a thing).
Next, he claims he "was a climatology professor at the University of Winnipeg", which also isn't true - again, there is no such thing. He was a geology professor. Granted, some of his published scientific works relate to climate change, but calling my Aunt an Uncle doesn't mean she has balls. At the very least, he misrepresents both his accredation and his experience."

Are you denying global warming or merely man made global warming? I bow to your PH.D in climatology but i was an ex met man and have more than a passing interest in the topic. Currently you are in the minority among eminent climatologists but I admit that is no reason to say you are wrong. I personally believe we are impacting the climate as huge temperature rises cannot be explained purely by solar and volcanic activity as they have been in the past e.g. the "hockey stick" graphical effect. I would be interested on your take on that and any other observations that disprove man made global warming.

I agree it sucks and the smoking police make me go outside to have a smoke even im my own house ...what a crock ... next it will be all the nose pickers have to pull their cars over if they want to pick their noses ...I can barely breath its so friggin cold .... -22 last night .... OUCH ..... when the ice starts forming on the end of your nose as soon as you go outside its F$#%#$ COLD. I wasn't planning on living in the Arctic but I guess I could probably pull it off now ....I think I am going to try to hammer a nail with a frozen banana tonight .... that should cheer me up just a little :).. at least its something to do other than hide in the house for the next 2 months .... no wonder 90% the people in Mn are alcoholics. I'm sitting here at 8pm in a singlet and shorts, sipping COLD beer sweating like a stuck pig. I would gladly give you 10 degrees that would bring us down to around 20 celcious. This is the hottest this place has been in the 25 years I've lived here. On the up side, I've got a coffee plant growing well.
If your wondering...New Zealand.
It's definately extreme.

Both are happening. Bush can't be blamed for global cooling but he is guilty in his apathy towards admitting global warming. In fact the plank is just guilty for existing.

Why fire Pelosi or Reid. They promised to do something about Global Warming and look...! They have! See how c-c-c-c-c-co-o-o-ld it i-i-i-s! This should help the polar ice caps! Way to go Pelosi. Job well done.

Nah Can't Blame Mr. Bush for this. It's all caused by the pollution of Madam Speakers new bigger plane the Air Force is gonna have to provide for her and her entourage. Seems that the one that the former Speaker used wasn't big enough for her.
Oh, Wait. It hasn't flown yet.

Impeaching political leaders will not have an effect on the world temperatures shifts. Regardless of who is in control of the American government the global climate will continue to change. The thing that needs to be done is planning for the results of the climate shift that will affect us all.
First the problem needs to be admitted and then dealt with.

I have a problem with the experts when it comes to global warming. They have no real data that is based on science. We have a bunch of computer models with color graphics but there isn't enough data to accurately project this. Our hard evidence is around 125 years old. In human years, that seems to be a long time. In the history of the earth, that's nothing. The evidence that is available points out we're actually cooler today than we were 100 years ago, on the average.
I think before we spend billions trying to correct all of our errors, we should probably see what's really causing this. We're having a terrible time with our satellites and radio systems because of the sun. We're observing changes in the radiation and gravity given off. This would explain many of the rather sudden changes we're seeing. I suspect this is a natural change with the sun as it ages. There isn't much we can do about the sun.

the whole enviro movement is about protecting the
o zone, our natural defense to the sun
harko makes some good points that really blend with enviros "wants" for example, fuel from methane..less co2 released in air (indepence towards foreign oil is good too),now harko needs to give better emissions from consumer vehicles ect ect

Put a coat and gloves on and stop whining.
I've heard many variations that "global" warming will result in a secondary global cooling/ice age.
I don't think we're anywhere near seeing these effects, but the weather will get crazier and crazier as time goes on.
As for this midwest freeze, I don't think it's that extraordinary. There were deep freezes in the northern midwest decades ago, and probably before that too.
Think about it, we are pretty close to Canada. All it takes is for a jetstream to dip downward into the midwest and engulf us in sub zero temps.
Nothing special here....but it'll probably get more polarized as time and global warming march on.

Much of the USA gets some "normal" temps for this time of year & it becomes headline news?
Just how does this prove global warning again?
By the way, they still can not grow the grapes in England that were grown during the Roman times? Too COLD!
That implies we are still in a global cooling cycle!
Interesting!

Funny yesterday I found my old diary that I kept in 1973 and on a day in February I wrote that the high was 0 and the low was -25. Today's high is 6 and low -5 where I am at in Michigan. As cold as it is now I still don't think the winters are as cold as they used to be when I was growing up.

I agree Someone--Anyone who has lived in the same area for most of their life will tell you...There was much more snow when I was a kid and a teenager than there is now. Whether it be warming or cooling IT IS CHANGING!! Personally I think that's preeety scarey... Who know's in 10 year's we may have summer in December and Winter in June. At least in North Carolina it's really changing guy's, I see a difference every year. I wont even get into what my Grandma say's...you know barefoot, 50 miles, 30 feet of snow ha,ha. But the fact remain's temps and season's change each year. I don't need a graph to tell me this-just look out your window and remember that last year on your B-day in Sept there was no snow.

Halco will always be able to find a whacko or two to prop up his argument.
I enjoyed listening to Rush today. He wants the scientists to be able to tell him precisely what the temperature will be in a year, in ten years, etc. This from a guy who thinks it's unreasonable to have our president give a rough timetable to end a war, within say, a year or two.
Rush doesn't understand that by having the scientists give out that amount of detail, he would embolden Mother Nature.

They're not dealing with absolutes. They're dealing with trend lines and models based on those trend lines.
Is there a chance they're wrong? Sure. Except for a few laws here and there, science is always open to revolutionary new thoughts. Does that mean we should ignore the story being told by the data collected to date? I don't think so, but others think it's fine. I think it would be wise to begin to curb the things we can, understanding that steady progress now is probably easier and cheaper than drastic action later.

"The temperature crashed to 38 below zero Monday morning at Hallock in northwestern Minnesota, and to 30 below at International Falls, the weather service said."
It's a grand day here on the Coast of Southern California. Sun is streamin' through the window. There's Santa Catalina Island out there. Butt, y'know, I just don't feel right about it since some folks from the North lectured me in a kinda nasal whine; "Yeah, but you just don't get those four seasons."

Anyone who understands Global Climate Change would understand that htis type of weather in no way invalidates that theory. Global Warming is a misnomer. Our weather patterns will change, there is clear historical evidence for this.
But anyone who listens to Rush Limbaugh for scientific expertise needs to have there head examined. See Mount Pinatubo...

Some of his stuff is pretty darned funny.
But I think that any information that is gotten from the media should be considered entertainment first, and news second.
The driving force is profit from advertisers and the media (both liberal and conservative) will do whatever it takes to increase profits. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. It just is.
