Dec. 24, 2006, 4:41 a.m.Good calm reasoned post DocJ, dash of eloquence too. Glad to see you're still giving value for money to your numerous admirers. You advocate the self immolation of tens of millions of US citizens. A nice Christian Christmas wish eh?

Dec. 23, 2006, 12:04 p.m.That is just kind of stupid. I would have used a different excuse than something like that!

Dec. 23, 2006, 12:20 p.m.I can appreciate someone's feeling strongly about the separation of church and state...but it seems to me that if its all that legitimate an issue, you could probably get it stopped in court. Setting himself on fire speaks much more of his own issues. Possibly we all know someone a bit like that: "Don't tick him off, he'll hurt himself."
Happy Holidays to everyone :)

Dec. 23, 2006, 1 p.m.I agree it is an issue of separation of church and state. It's unfortunate, and extremely arrogant that the school district is insensitive to this issue.
As for the protestor, I think he should seek extensive therapy.

Dec. 23, 2006, 7:29 p.m.I cannot appreciate anyone feeling strongly about this issue when it comes to seperation of church and state. What about the word Christ in Christmas does not only he but anyone else not understand?
What happened to the Christian's rights to celebrate this holiday, and it's not happy holiday, it's Christmas for pete's sake.
I think the non-Christians need to realize that they too need to back up, back off. Insisting on your rights usually infringes on someone else's rights. A moment of silence is not a prayer, Happy Holiday is not Merry Christmas.
Is there so much hate in the ACLU and those who support this that they cannot see they are taking away someone else's rights, in this case those who celebrate Christmas. Separation of church and state doesn't mean the state gets to force atheism upon the general population.

Dec. 24, 2006, 10:48 a.m.I am sorry but separation of church and state does not exsit. It is never stated in the Constitution. Alot of people say that it is implied but it actually says "Congress will make no law establishing a religion....." When they scream "Separation of Church and State" they usually want to squash specifically Christianity in favor of "Some other" belief.
Seperation of Church and State was the topic of a letter written by Thomas Jefferson telling a specific church that the government would not "Infringe" on their way of worship.

Dec. 23, 2006, 1:58 p.m.This pitiful creature has only gotten a taste of what awaits him in the afterlife. He has made the choice to fight against God, and for that he will suffer. It's really just sad when you live in a world where people will light themselves on fire to protest Christmas, which is essentially what this man did. Christmas is about charity, about love and happiness! In any case, I shan't let him spoil my holiday.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Dec. 23, 2006, 3:35 p.m.The irony and disconnect of Dibbun comments is hilarious. After condemning some PC Stalinist shmucko-brain to damnation, Dibbun writes about 'charity, about love and happiness'. I guess that mercy has nothing to do with these values.
As a Liberal, I love Christmas, for I believe it's the most Liberal time of the year. People are encouraged to give, especially to the poor, office parties mean that the abstinence crowd has to shut up, and the international flavor of the holiday also means that the nationalist crowd needs to shut up as well.
So wishing Good Will to All ( a.k.a. wishing none eternal damnation ) Merry Christmas to everyone. Even the crispy PC Loony Lad and Dibbun.

Dec. 23, 2006, 11:17 p.m.What you religious nuts fail to see is that what he was protesting against was the endorsement of religion by the public school system. He was protesting the breaking down of the wall between church and state. What you nuts fail to see is that if you do finally succeed in tearing down that wall, you will be next. Your right to worship will be in danger. So go ahead and giggle with glee when someone on the "other side" burns himself with gasoline in the process of standing up for his convictions. I suppose that is the "christian" thing to do nowadays. Just remember that those on the other side are willing to fight for your right to worship freely just as much as they're willing to fight for their right to have freedom FROM religion.
For most Christians nowadays, standing up for your convictions equates to denying other americans the right to marry just because they're different. Very christ-like indeed...

Dec. 23, 2006, 2:01 p.m.I guess it must really burn him up. I wonder if he had somebody ready with the fire extinguisher sseconds after he lit up to put him out - just to make his point. Either way, hope he wore his clean undies...

Dec. 23, 2006, 2:58 p.m.Let us bow our heads for a moment of silence...now if it was just an ACLU Lawyer....
-

LordyLordy
Dec. 23, 2006, 5:40 p.m.Maybe that's the problem? When you bow your head for a moment of silence, you are talking to nobody and getting help from nobody? He had nothing to ground himself on, nor to put a knot at the end of his rope. In a moment of silence only the voice of depression speaks in this case and its message is always the same.
His family should file a lawsuit against the ACLU! They've led many down this same path. If they were truly the ACLU they would be fighting and supporting the rights of those who want to pray, and telling those who don't to simply have that moment of silence, in respect for the rights of those who want to pray.
