Nov. 5, 2006, 9:01 a.m.Barbaric really...but not surprising given their treatment of women in general!

Nov. 5, 2006, 7:16 p.m.It's unbeleivable that these people think it is the woman's fault if a man is turned on by her actions. Let's see now, a woman is walking down the streeet in a mini skirt, wow am I turned on. With their thinking it's perfectly ok for me to rape her. Is that the heighth of stupidity or what. Rape would be common place in countries that allowed mini-skirts huh? South Korea better watch out, they just passed a law that women could wear them.

you are a despicable individual.
It is worthy to note the close friendship of GW Bush with the saudi 'royal' family.
When the neocons claim that their ideology is to use US power to achieve som kind of a new moral world order, this shows the extent of the deception.

Nov. 6, 2006, 12:55 a.m.Actually, til the Bush admin America had the moral ground and often was in the position to fight human rights abuses in other countries. That was one of the reasons many in the world forgave us our mistakes and ignorance about the rest of the world; at least we were trying to make things better for much of the rest of the world.
When our prez declares that the Geneva Convention and our constitution do not apply when inconvenient for his agenda, our allies start to get the idea they can use chemical weapons on civilians (ala Saddam`s attack on Kurds) and torture victims or murder political prisoners.
The world is watching and `unfortunately` is not Republican so they don`t have blinders on.

Nov. 5, 2006, 8:21 p.m.its a real shame on how they view women.. even if she had been with a spouse, does that mean it wouldnt have happened? i think this society is totally screwed up! it isnt as if she hasnt already been punished enough by the rape itself.. now she has to go through this?

Nov. 5, 2006, 8:50 p.m.If this incident had not been recorded on a camera phone so that there was actual proof, nothing would have happened to the assailants because it would have been her word against theirs. The victim will probably have to go into hiding because the sentences will deprive five wives of their husbands and bring shame on them also.
I can remember a time not that long ago in this country when rapes went unreported because courts maintained the victim had "asked" for it, and except for cases where the woman was white and the man was black or another ethnicity, few sentences were handed out for rape. Until the mid-80's, courts threw out cases where husbands beat and raped their wives-after all, she could leave if she really wanted to and they didn't want to hurt the husbands reputation by taking the charges seriously. At least until the husband killed her.
Maybe thirty years from now, Saudi women will have progressed beyond being chattel property...but probably not.

Nov. 5, 2006, 9:30 p.m.The rights of all as equals is a new thing. Different colors, religions, sexes, preferences, and a hundred other factors make the world a giant we vs. them. The willingness and desire to make a THEM is at the heart of it.
Many religions preach brotherhood, and yet still see other humans as different, and undeserving.
The woman in this case will likely die if the sentence is carried out in 1 session. (People tend to start dying at the 38th to 45th lash, which was why 39 lashes in the Bible was a terrible punishment the crowd should have been satisfied with for Yeshua.)
The lashes might be carried out over time, 5 here, 10 there. Any more than that and they might just as well kill the pair outright.
To see others as people, worthy of respect and mercy, tolerance and care... that is the big issue.

Nov. 5, 2006, 10:01 p.m.It's amazing that a little bit of oil can make most of the West, the US in particular, overlook the absolute barbarity of this beastly ******ant little country country and its medieval overlords.
Concepts like human rights, liberty, justice and equality are routinely trumped by money and power.

Nov. 5, 2006, 10:03 p.m.Is it any wonder we are so servile and fawning for our oil with those f....g Saudi's? They trample on anything feminine and use Islam as their weapon! Tet, we allow this thugs and lowlifes with their headscarves and piety ****** to escape justice? The poor woman being brutalized by the government yet she was the one gang-raped??? No wonder these Arabs are nothing more than tribal garbage...

Nov. 5, 2006, 10:35 p.m.Their legal system or whatever system they're going by, makes absolutely no sense.
And they have the nerve to say that our western lifestyles are f***ed up?
Go figure.

Nov. 5, 2006, 10:41 p.m.No Kidding? Recall Mr Bush holding the hand of that Saudi prince as they strolled the rose garden? The Saudi Royal Family likes barbaric religious control and punishment of it's populace. Keeps them in line. The Bush family is very tight with the Saudi Royals, yes? They bailed out the failed oil venture of Bush 2nd in Texas in the 80s among other "investments".
How many cold dark steps down the path are we away from our own religous advisors of our current president (Revs like Haggard, Hagee, Falwell, Robertson, Robbinson etc) whispering in HIS ear that maybe this sort of thing, punishing a woman who had bare shoulders in public, for instance - maybe she was partially guilty she got raped?

Nov. 5, 2006, 11:37 p.m.BTW everyone, 90 lashes may be a death sentence. If you have ever seen a lashing, that is a lot of lashes!

Nov. 5, 2006, 11:44 p.m.When I lived in Riyad, 75 lashes was considered a death penalty... some people made it to 80, but I never heard of anyone making it to 90 and living.

The mantra of the neo cons is to promote a moral order in the world, using force if necessary.
It is despicable of this administration to cozy up to the saudis (but they sometimes give 'lessons' to the russians or chinese),and even more to keep such people as personal friends-especially when there also is a lot of business done.
It is political, obviously, and your denials are stupid

Nov. 6, 2006, 9:39 a.m.It has to be noted that this sentence against the victim is not for adultery. This, under the sharia, would have been death. She simply was in a car with a man, friend of the family (women cannot drive there)
At least, libnemesis, you might see the problem of promoting womens rights in afghanistan (good thing),and making friends with the Al Saud family. (who are just as hypocritical as Ted Haggard as far as their own lifestyle is concerned)

Nov. 23, 2006, 11:12 a.m."Justice in Saudi Arabia is administered by a system of religious courts"
Isn't this what you Repugnantcans want?
"Do you think it satisfies God?"
Well, isn't that the only question that matters? Besides, 90 lashes is a small price for an evening fling with 7 men. You know she loved it. (I feel a little embarrassed even writing that in jest)
"She suddenly found herself divorced from her husband, Mansour al-Timani, after her half-brothers went to a judge and told him their sister had married beneath her."
Yea-- right--. Her full name is Brittany Fatima Spears.
"Sharia allows defendants to deny signed confessions... They still get punished if convicted, but the verdict is lighter."
Repugnantcans just check themselves into a "rehab center" then declare themselves cured. If the transgressions involve family members, -- "it's a family matter" & "how dare you drag ... into your sick and depraved...."
