Aug. 19, 2006, 5:40 p.m.so we are bringing safety to our country how? by sending our men over there to be killed relentlessly? good plan. obviously we have not done well on the whole democracy thing over there, what makes us think its going to go over any better elsewhere? looks like we are really accomplishing what we started in Afghanistan.. and Iraq. [insert sarcasm]

Aug. 19, 2006, 5:45 p.m.dbsdiamonds....it's called sarcasm
the only reason the battle is overlooked is because of the Iraq war-Our war was to fight the terrorists in the middle east and we did it right by invading Afghanistan-why did we have to go and stupidly get involved in a war that hasn't affected our country in any way but detrimentally
and don't sit there and call someone a "tree hugger" because of his or her opinion-make an opinion of your own that makes sense and then we'll find you worth listening to

Iupdate
Aug. 19, 2006, 6:06 p.m.This separates the boys from the men, after all what result you expect when:
1) No clear and defined objective.
2) No experience to fight what is not defined.
3) USA do not have a good record of defending itself from freedom fighters.
4) USA does not have a good record of boots on the ground, they fight better in her air, not from the air.
5) USA is fighting a underground war from heir air.
Nothing is achieve this way. USA have an invincible record of fighting and winning war in the air, and they would have already won if they can only realize and get over it that this is not an air war, maybe someone aught to wake them up and tell them, the war is underground, the sooner you get on the ground you can go to where the enemy is, under the ground. So get with it.

Aug. 19, 2006, 6:07 p.m.Are you kidding me? Sending our people to be "killed relentlessly"? Me thinks that may be a stretch. I do not mind someone opposing a tasking or effort that our country is doing, but please stop using the deaths of military personnel as your argument to stop it. Lets say no one dies on either side, then maybe you would support our country over other groups. Well I did say maybe

Aug. 19, 2006, 6:15 p.m.We have a family friend, Marine, who is assigned to the top General's convoy in Afghanistan and is scheduled back in Dec. My dad was 35 years Navy. An honest and objective study of that region since the Iranian hostage crisis will reveal a cancerous growth of islamic fundamentalism that one day we will have to face down. Carter blew it, Reagan backed down (Beirut marine bombing), Bush senior did nothing and Clinton was a joke. While these 4 asswipes sat back groups like Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah and others gained resources and their cancerous views have become a more mainstream than most would admit. I am distraught by W's severe lack of governmental containment and spending policies, but I for one understand what appeasement and ignorance leads to when faced with an enemy hell bent on taking over. Read these group's charters, then spend a few more on pre WW2 debates and Churchill's views on Hitler. Your ignorance will lead to a more dangerous future conflict, ie Iran nukes.

how can you assume that because someone does not support the idea of the war, or the reasoning of the war, one supports the other side, or does not support the US. i have a friend over in afghanistan right now and i fully support him, just not the cause. take off your blinders man.

Aug. 19, 2006, 9:02 p.m.When will this war end?
It's been 5 years ago that our troops haven't been able to capture or kill Osama Bin Laden. I'm not saying that our troops didn't try but this administration policy is gddamn hilarious to say the least.
"Let's bomb some talibans, no wait a minute, let's bomb Saddam, Ahhhh! Who's next? Hezbollah? Good idea."
That's this administration policy in a quote.

Aug. 19, 2006, 10:10 p.m.I am a thirteen year old kid and realized you all liberals are stupid. You should be backing a president in a time of war, what you would be saying if it was Clinton in this position. What has Bush done wrong, he's liberated the Iraqis, took saddam Hussein out of power, taken down terrorist leaders. You’re completely blinded by what the media says, and your hatred for Bush amazes me. We are at war, of course there is going to be military casualties, and civilian casualties. But the casualties are at such a minimum it makes me laugh. 2,000 are hardly any deaths, even though every soldier’s life is valued. The media
is making it like our whole army is being taken down, like the casualties are in the 10,000s. I don't think any of you realize what we are doing in Iraq. We are looking for weapons of mass destruction, which every intelligence agency in the world reported were in Iraq.

Its time we cut the crap in saying oh yeah Geogre Bush wanted to go into Iraq for the oil, oh yeah Geogre Bush did 911. You are all ignorant, and listen to the first video or article that tells you anything about Bush

Take a look at how the rest of the world lives their day to day lives and then look at how we live ours. I don't care who is in office, it is in their best intrest to quell any attacks on our soil. You guys are quick to critize but just as quick to call us to action. You don't know the whole story. Sit back and enjoy the life that we provide.

Aug. 19, 2006, 11:10 p.m.Let's not forget that neither Afganistan nor Iraq as souvereign states had anything to do with 911 attack.
Ben Laden was USA ally in the time of Afgan-USSR war. He later got disillusioned with USA. However from the fact that he stayed in Afganistan does not follow necessity of invasion on independent country made without formal declaration of war. Please refer to international law in the matter of apprehending criminals living in forgein countries. Invasinon of Iraq follows similar pattern and is similarly groundless. USA is not threaten by invasion of mahomedans. Quite opposite is true.

On the issue of WMDs none were found and the US government has stopped looking for them. Saddam was a despicable dictator but he was a bulwark against radical Islam in general and radical Shiism in particular.
Iraq has become a breeding ground of Islamic fundamentalism. As well the danger is that Iraq will fall into Iran's sphere of interest.
The debate around Iraq isn't simply a matter of counting US casualties. It is a matter of what advances long term US interests. Just as many who oppose the war are doing so for patriotic reasons as those who support it. They simply see their patriotic duty as different.

(These times have changed just like they did from the time of the World Wars. International law doesn't always keep up with the present day threats.)
International law like any other field of law is constantly undergoing change. However, like law in any other field the need for international law doesn't go away it increases.
There are those that seem to think terrorism will be beaten by force of arms. This seems unlikely, terrorism is a set of tactics adopted to carry out political ends. To attempt to address the tactics without addressing the underlying issues is in the end futile.

Aug. 19, 2006, 11:44 p.m.I don't know where you people have been living for the past 5 years. I can tell you that I've been living,,,, in Iraq for 2 of the past 5 years and have seen first hand what life is really like without the politics and opinions of people who have never seen what I have. With that said we move on... Our lives are not so cut and dried and I am used to the mainstream public not understanding what is really going on because all they see is what the media reports. Trust me when I say that if you were there for that amount of time you would develope a whole new set of values... I did!!!!

Aug. 20, 2006, midnightI can see no one else wants to debate... I will close with these final comments. You can try to justify any way that you want why we shouldn't take the fight to them (legal, international law, morals) but think of this.. the threat isn't gone, London to numerous targets less than a week ago... Wake up!!! We live in a wonderland and we will!!! wake up. These people who have declared Jihad or war on us don't think the way we do. They do not have the same morales or values we have. They were taught to hate us and kill us from the time they were born. Politics and policy are out the window with these kinds of people. I don't know where we will be in 5 years. I can only hope that people will wake up and see the real threat and possibilities they are capable of and take whatever action to avert their oppression.

you are somebody who supposed to have served in Iraq. I belive you were not involved in raping Iraqi women. If you are saying that we have been taught to hate you, that is a lie. Nobody taught me to hate Jews, Christian or any other people who follow any other way of life. We have taught to speak to them and convey the message of Islam so that they could be following the religion of God. We Muslim feel sad when we see people worshiping idols like Jesus. You suppose to worship God but anyway it doesn't concern us much because you are not answerable to us but God. Instead I was taught to respect Jews and Christian as they are the people of the book. But in the future we will teach our children to the atrocities that you have committed in the name of Jesus and the Bible, under the guise of war on terror. Jihad is part of Islam that is our birth right to attack when you are attacked, we do not apologies for that. I don't see you turning the other cheek, I see you as imperialist.

Do you really not know, or are you just making fun of those who are doing their duty?
Afganistan and Iraq both were aiding and supporting International Terrorism according to the UN and the USA in support of the various UN resolutions stopped this support of International Terrorism.
Since the USA avoids killing the civilians that the terrorists use as human shields, it is taking a while to get rid of the remnant. As the USA pulls back and out to let local and other nations troops take over, the terrorists are getting more active since these resources are not as good at the surgical strikes of the USA.
Just keep your head in the ground until the next 9-11 and then you can jump up and down as you did the last time.

Aug. 20, 2006, 10:03 a.m.If Bush would have deployed the amount of troops he sent to Iraq to Afghanastan we would have wiped out the Taliban, and captured Bin Laden. But I forgot Sadham had WMD's. By the way did we ever find them.

If you are truly 13, you have only five years to wait. By that time we will probably have the draft back, so we can find enough troups to send to Iraq, and any other little war that happens along. Some of our present soldiers are being sent back, after they have already been there a year, because enlistments are down. Some of our patriotic young people have joined, because they felt it was their duty to protect the homeland. What will you do, when you reach the ripe, wise, old age of 18.
